For the red JCPenney next to Waukegan, it is probably the one in Gurnee Mills, but that was an outlet. That space opened in 1991 as a Sears catalog outlet which closed in 1993. It became the JCPenney catalog outlet from 1994 until it closed in 2009. Then, the space became Shoppers World from 2011 until it closed in 2016, then it became Floor & Decor in 2017, which is still open

McHenry/Johnsburg retail corridor reminds me of the Oswego/Yorkville retail corridor along U.S. Highway 34 were they overbuilt it due to anticipation of further residential growth in the area until the housing crash and 2008 pretty much out an end to that, seems like the same thing is happening to McHenry/Johnsburg as well Also, surprised the Matteson location by the former Lincoln Mall hasn't closed yet, that area has been slowly going downhill for quite a while now and has a lot of retail vacancies surrounding the store

Yeah this area was really hit hard by the 2008 housing crash.

@@LostDepartments a lot of outer suburbs were hit hard by it really. Seems like the only suburbs that have really started growing again are Plainfield/Joliet/Shorewood and Huntley/Gilberts/Elgin/Pingree Grove

I’ve heard Matteson is a horrible area, I’m also surprised that one is staying open. I imagine the theft is extremely high.

One consequence of the bailout is that JCP is now privately held, and does not disclose any financial information. It's no longer possible to know for sure how well it's doing.

Honestly it’s not a surprise that a small JCP like this is closing

As an Algonquin native who moved McHenry, this is soooo sad. I worked at Sears at Spring Hill and I hate seeing everything go out.

JCPenney still has not adapted to modern shopping these days which is why they are still struggling and closing stores. Macys has done a good shop of adapting even though they also have there struggles as they have many profitable locations around the country. JCPenney on the other hand I have no clue how there stores are profitable unless if they are the only anchor store left in a dead mall. Great Video!

Wondering about a couple JCPenney stores in the midwest. Valley West Mall in West Des Moines, IA and SouthPark Mall in Moline, IL. Hoping for the best.

I think you explained why the store wasn't busy. Liquidation sales are a rip off. With a lot of go forward stores nearby, they are not going to move anything. I am very surprised that the North Aurora store is not closing. It is always dead and there is a lot of dead space in there. It seems that further into Chicago, the stores are a lot better stocked and busier. Fox Valley Penney's has taken a dive in recent years.

The Algonquin one appears to be okay but a lot of the older school stores Woodfield, Yorktown, and even Golf Mill appear to be better stocked than these newer stores.

After working for jcpenney already 3+ years, the company is thriving even more than it did when I first started working there. I am surprised as well that this location is going to be closing. They most likely have been unable to make their sales goal due to there being barely any people shopping at that location like u mentioned in your video

You should document the North Riverside Penney's. Very nice store and busy. Probably on the same caliber as Woodfield Penney's
