Had great grand parents who were convinced by a magazine thing if they kept ordering they would win a prize and they were due a massive prize, they couldn't be convinced otherwise... died without any money or prize. Had grand parent who was sending 90% of her money to charities and could not say no whenever they phoned or knocked on the door but would not listen when told to stop. Had other grand parents who came into money late in life and everyone from the neighbours to the carers, to Dave down the road had their hands in their pockets. Whilst I can entirely see where you are coming from about not wanting to be in the centre of 3 parties, you seem to be maybe unaware of the predatory reality some elderly are facing so I understand where some of these "over protective" children are coming from.

Years ago I got to the point of letting the customer actually buy the top coat themselves so they couldn't decide later that they didn't like the colour and try and pretend I 'got the wrong colour'! I don't miss all that but I did love the actual decorating tbh when the going was good. Another time, I'd quoted a friend for his sash windows, 15 of them, inside and out and had agreed a price and was just about to start that phase when he all of a sudden introduced me to 'Artur' - a young Polish gentleman, who was going to 'quote for the sashes as well' - I was like who is this and wtaf how can you do this to me! I told him, mate, that quote I gave you is ridiculously cheap, and it's only cause I'm doing all the rest of it in with them. He didn't see it that way and to this day thinks I was being unreasonable. Our friendship did not survive.
