It's not true, katas are like musical scales for classical musicians. No muscican performs scales but are crucial to improve techniques. Katas must be done with power and concentration otherwise it is just a dance.

I have went from a Wha Rang point of view to a Japanese Point of view and my Art does not include Kata as it is practiced as seen today. The form of Kata we do is connected to auto response and then a movement after in each element. I like what you have said and I need to look into Kata but because I am now learning from the distinguished enemy of the Rang’s me learning Kata is getting a inside look at the playbook and the movements of the enemy and the mindset. My journey is to the Sulsa but that is easier said than done and I will start at Mukub. May you be blessed by God all mighty and may you defeat your enemies be they physical or unseen. Now that I think about it I guess Qigong would be a form of Kata so this makes me wonder does Wha Rang Do have Ki principles in Kata? And if so I wonder if it can be as effective as Qigong as far as Transmutation?

It`s very true. You`ve got these acolytes preaching that their teacher/instructors moves from SF training or some hybrid techniques has made traditional MA`s extinct/obsolete. It`s The Person, Not The Art that makes the difference. because your training is not worth your time If you Don`t Have the Guts To Use It Effectively To The Situation.

Grand Master Griffin just watched three of your videos on myths and misconceptions in the martial arts. I love your analysis of how some people claim all but their style or system is ineffective. I see a lot of Brazilian Jujitsu videos make this claim to the point of nausea. So I remember a quote by Grandmaster Woodrow Fairbanks and he gave a demonstration in our class at the West End YMCA. He asked on student to execute a side kick based on his style, Karate, then asked a Tae Kwon Do student execute a side. He pointed out the end result was kicking with the side of the foot regardless of the angle of the supporting leg and both students could break a number of boards. Then he said, "Ain't style ever beat no body." My take was it was the amount of training and conditioning and experience with fighting. Please keep From the Dojang coming, Ovie H. Mitchell, III a fellow student in martial arts.

This has been developing in martial arts for many years. I don't think it's necessarily the fault of instructors or schools but prospective students or new people seeking to learn martial arts. They (the new or possible new students) seek to learn self defense or a martial art but many of them are turned off by the idea that they may and will get hit from time to time in class whether it's from sparring or whatever. They want to essentially learn how to be street warriors (or someone who just wants to be able to take care of themselves out on the street) but they don't in any way want to do the things it takes to become that warrior. So there's a disconnect in what they want, their expectations of what it takes to get there and what they're willing to undergo in that process. Medical and dental work is expensive so I'm sure that plays a role as very few want to lose teeth, break a nose or get serious bruises and sprains on a regular basis but I'm sure school owners/instructors have had a harder time getting a keeping students in the striking arts than some other arts. While BJJ is a great method to learn and ppl do get hurt, it doesn't look as visually intimidating as maybe Shotokan Karate, or TSD because new practitioners typically don't see strikes so it's easier for them mentally to tell themselves they can do that and further that they want to study it because it's effective. But what they don't see is what is the alternative... For example watching a pro mma fight where one fighter is skilled in all around techniques going up against a strict BJJ practioner who throws no punches nor kicks. Without offensive striking weapons on the street, you'll lack the most effective thing you have which is to quickly cause pain, discomfort or unconsciousness in that aggressor. Instructors have to find a way to just tell the truth to new students in the striking arts and find a way to bring students along in the process to overcome the fear and to protect them as much as possible. There are going to be those potential new students who will in no way voluntarily seriously spar, get hit, give hits and keep coming back to class so there is no way to realistically serve those students in the striking arts in my opinion.

They don't. In a street fight you won't have time, nor mind, to care about forms. You'll probably rely alot on instinct and do half-assed moves of said forms. And even if you could keep composure enough to do the forms...the ones attacking you won't give you space nor time to do them properly. Forms are nothing more than a way for your body and mind to remember these moves, but not so much to fight(much less on the streets) as to be able to reproduce them in a beautiful way in front of others.

I'm a veteran martial artist myself who's dabbled in multiple systems like Tae Kwon Do, Wing Chun, JKD (both so-called original and concepts) etc... I don't claim to be any rank at all. My skills speak for themselves. Anyone can see that i was highly Bruce Lee influenced but i'm careful to say that I don't teach JKD. I rarely speak about anything martial arts related unless if someone picks on my brain for knowledge or i'm working out with someone. I have no patience for any b.s. artist even if he's contributed greatly to the martial arts community ( like this one guy who had the living legions to say that Bruce Lee anointed him with a certain name decades after the man's death, and that he brought Remy Presas to the U.S.).
