Came across this preparing to teach a class on this exact topic, and it's very helpful, thanks. Just a note, in the 5th sentence of the practice, the phrase “studied about" isn't correct, "Learned about" would work better here as study doesn't need any participles, we'd simply say "we studied..."

No, Ma'am. They are used differently as they have different function. Noun clause as subject is itself being the topic or performer of the action in the sentence while noun clause as an appositive gives only additional information about the first noun in the sentence. :)
