I just don’t keep friends that don’t support the driver…if you don’t pitch in after the second time you can find your own way after that without me offering to help. If you ask me why then I’ll bring up how expensive car upkeep is…gas/ repairs tires brakes. Keeps me from getting frustrated with having expectations that people pay for services received…like yeah we are friends but I’m not your parent. (Money and friends is touchy only if you don’t keep your boundaries up) hope this helps people pleasers out there. We are taken from at every turn.

I would say offer to teach them how to drive if that’s part of the issue and if they won’t make the time then they are just choosing to be lazy and mooch.

Tell them to find a ride over and that it bothers you that you always have to pick them up. They’ll understand or they won’t and good riddens.

The sensible situation for me is to pay my roomate $100 to fill.his gas tank. I have bad vision , We both work at home and go shopping together. It works out well

It would be better for a lot of people if the US had a less car centric culture. Anybody who wants a car? Go for it. But for anybody else who can’t afford a car or doesn’t want one, can have the options of trains, rails, buses, walkable and SAFE places… I mean if owning a car is this stressful anyway… think about it…

Ugh I have a friend who lives in the city and refuses to learn to drive, but she plans outings way outside of the city with the expectation that a friend will get her there in their car. Like it doesn’t even occur to her if she just learned to drive it would take some of the burden off of her friends. So inconsiderate.

ugh i could of gotten my license last year but the fact that the DMV didn't give me my permit after I pass all because I failed my vision test in one eye and I had too see a eye dr and have them fill out the DMV paper so I can get my permit. It took them six fucking months too finally sign the damn paper. i had to keep coming in to get fitted for contacts for my eye. then there's family and friends hardly teaching me how too drive I pretty much drove by myself to the closest stores at times. i failed my first behind the wheel test and then because of stupid covid they shut down twice and reschedule my second one 4 days before my permit expired. And the day before my Husband came too me and was like the tags on the car is expire that freaking piss me off then I called my parents to see if I can use their car for the test and they told me no so I didn't do the second test. then my parents a year later ask why haven't i gotten my license yet and i told them i ask them if i can use their car and they turn me down and my parents was SO I'm like well time and time again things fucking come up that is out of my control and i could of pass my second time but i cant take a test with no car. yeah people keep telling me get ur licence i will teach you how too drive or pay for ur driving school and everytime they flake on me.

This is an interesting topic! I’m a driver. Most of my friends drive. But I was close to a friend who doesn’t drive. For YEARS I’d pick her up drop her home she NEVER offered gas to contribute and it was ALWAYS expected of me to pick her up and drop her home. I recently started requiring of her to meet me at my house. A few times she’s make a fuss but it was rare she would actually meet me. But 100% it was expected of me to drop her home every single time. And if we come back late many times she’d even sleep so I’m left to drive alone in silence while she was off in zzzlala land. Long story short the friendship is slowly dying and honestly I don’t mind at all

I'm 30 and I don't drive a car, maybe it's the stress with having pay out more money instead of saving more, I have a job that's near by so I don't need to drive at the moment, I'll think about it tho, it's the other drivers as well that can mess you by accidents. You are absolutely right that cars are expensive and that friends have to help out with paying. I have my best friend who drives us to places and I do help out with paying for his car. I also pay for our take away pizzas etc to make it seem like he does the driving for a reason.

Lo, funny story. I remember I picked a couple of friends up to go to some amusement park. The drive to the amusement park was about 30 mins and then 30 mins back. There was an agreement that riders will pay the driver gas money but I remember I didnt get paid anything. I didnt say anything until like 2 weeks later one of my friends offered to pay, I said it wasnt necessary but if she was adamant, I would be appreciative. I remember her transferring me 2 whole dollars for essentially an hour drive. Idk I wasnt offended or mad I just thought it was funny. I'm usually one of the primary drivers in my friend group. For me, you dont have to pay me a dime in gas money if A) You also drive and you pick me up from time to time. Its only fair that I drive you when you drive me, we dont bring money into it then. Or B) You have filled up my tank before. There are some friends who have gone out of their way to pay for gas and for that I am forever appreciative of it. Not only just gas but if you have ever paid for me for anything and were some help to me, yeah I'm down to give rides to that guy. There is a special case where another friend got his license in high school (before I did) and he was the only driver. This guy has given me countless rides home and has driven the entire squad around no problem. That guy has a free ride in my book.
