Some more of my routes. Diversionary via Westbury and Castle Cary to Yeovil Junction, pick up a token at Pen Mill and the route across to Brizzle. Nice little run. Unbelievable that low wall at Sydney Gardens, even lower than the one at Dawlish. My favourite route until they took it away from Sals in 2009. I was lucky enough to work the last ever SWT morning train on Saturday the 12th of December to Paignton & back, didn't work the last ever though 2 more that day. Unfortunately at Sydney Gardens they put a fence up by that wall. Doesn't look too bad but it spoiled the general look of the place. Tilehurst is interesting because I had relatives in Woodley, Reading. On a day out in 1965 or 66 we saw Up & Dn Blue Pullmans go past (the only trains that should be blue apart from the Glasgow Blue train, similar to the 310s that I grew up with in Coventry) and at the General - Westerns, Hymeks and Warships of course in their proper colours 😁 Oh for a time machine.

Wonderful stuff! Thank you so much for uploading this. This brings back so many great memories of travelling on the brilliant Mid Hants Daylight Railtours. I travelled on this first excursion and pretty much all of the others right up until the final Daylight tour in October 2004. For me they were the best value Railtours between 1998 and 2004. There was a wonderful atmosphere on the trains between the volunteers who worked on them and the passengers, many of whom became regulars. A great range of destinations were visited over the years and a superb pool of motive power from the Ropley stable provided spirited performances. 31625, 73096, 41312, 34016 & 35005 all took turns in hauling the popular "Green Train" around the country. 73096 is my favourite locomotive and she really proved herself to be a magnificent main line performer. Always reliable and always on top of the job. She only failed once out on the ML but was repaired swiftly by the support crew and carried on with the rest of the rail tour with out problems. I would love to see more footage of 73096 and the Green train on the main line. Thank you once again for a great reminder of the better days of main line steam.

As a student in Stoke I used to commute from Longport the following winter to this… other journeys too and more commuting to Manchester so I spent quite a lot of time in the station. It always seemed to have quite a lot of staff, and the BR uniforms were pretty eclectic compared with the post privatisation corporate wear. I bought a little book of loco numbers from the little newsagent kiosk… used to buy papers there too. I liked the Nestles chocolate vending machine on the platform too. Loved the class 304’s with the springy seats, warmed in winter… not so much the Sprinters. Sometimes there’d be loco hauled local services - declassified 1st class compartment stock - luxury. Can’t remember what the locos would have been though. All seems a long time ago now - happy memories.

That XC at 13.40 on the UP heading in to Platform 2. I may have been the guard on that train. 3 brake vans. Round Bomo West I prepared a XC in the carriage shed, gave the driver the details of the train, how many coaches. Checked the rear 3 coaches, as you did to make sure that the brakes were applied and then climbed up & wound the handbrake off in the rear brake van. Checking the brakes were applied on the rear 3 coaches & walking to the front earlier I never looked above the sole bars to walking to the front (Poole end), in the shed. I gave the driver the indication for a brake test from the rear brake van and we carried out a successful brake test. I then gave him a green flag to leave the carriage shed, he took power and we didn't go anywhere. He tried again, the 47 was straining but the train wasn't moving. Something was wrong. This numbnut then realised I had another 2 brake vans on. I jumped down, went up to the front & apologised to the driver. I was newly passed out that June 😳 Oddly the handbrakes had been applied to the other 2 brake vans as well in the consist. Kudos to the driver for realising something was up and not giving the 47 full power and dragging the train.

Tom was in the TC cab leaving from the depot and I was in the 73 cab after giving him a brake test. We were heading for Poole and just cleared Brankdome station when we came to a grinding halt. I couldn't get hold of Tom so started walking along the troughing to the front. He was walking the other way towards me. Change End Lever in the 73, he had forgotten to change it. @spompey Steve retired shortly before I did from Salisbury, top man. He had serious problems with his back (I think it was a collapsed disc), and the 159 seats are not the best. Ex Reading or Southall man too I believe, used to work with Kev Naylon and Pete Rapley, another one of my Bomo workmates who is now, or last I heard, a manager for XC at Bomo. You must know Richard Himson too who was a guard at Southall. Used to be one of our TCSs at Bomo too but later became a driver at Sals. We used to have a bubble car for roads and Richard rocked it side to side on it's suspension in the platform at Yeovil Pen Mill. Driver that day was Robin Tandy who had a lucky escape in the Salisbury crash. Had to be cut out of the cab and broken ankle. Never worked again. He was 74 though, started in 1962 😮

Possibly a daft question but how do train drivers know which track to follow? Passed really close at 28:24!
@spompey15 күн бұрын
Not silly at all. .Drivers rely that the signalman has set their route up if they are to diverge at a junction. Nowadays computers check the route set up is clear and that no clash of interest is possible and will not set up a conflicting route at any time. Of course the driver has to function to the corresponding signals, such as caution and stop and proceed, they must learn and fully understand the route that they are driving on and in my time it was down to the driver to stop if a route was incorrectly set for them. It all boiled down to trust and being able to work together, computers will oversee the signalman's actions and there is so much on board safety devices on these trains now that it is almost impossible to pass signals at red. Basically it is gauged so that trains will never strike one another when on opposite tracks and curves. I hope that helps answer the question to sum it all up it is the driver knowing and having absorbed everything about their route. A bit like the London Knowledge taxi drivers do...Best wishes and many thanks...Mark
