Amazing month of books. I was really enjoying passing until the ending, which I felt was just out of the blue and a bit random? How have I never heard of Recitatif?! It sounds like auch a fascinating concept and Toni M is a genius. I'm glad you loved the road a lot more than I did when I read it in 2008 - maybe it was me, not the book though! I loved red at the bone by Jacqueline Woodson, so I'd really like to read the one that you mentioned.

Omg the difficulty to maintain hydration is real lmao I’ve been drinking coconut water to get the electrolytes…hate coconut water but holy crud the heat is making me desperate 🤣😮‍💨🫠 Ummmm soooo…would yall ever consider a book club 👀 like maybe a monthly live to chat about whatever book was chosen that month? I feel like yall would be incredible to have book club chats with lol Anyway, either way I eat your videos up and am introduced to genres I’ve never dabbled in and titles I’ve never heard of and I’m LOVING IT 😆🙌🏽🥂

"this is the most heartbreaking book i've ever read" ......let me go pick it up immediately! 😅 What's wrong with me?? 😂 Also very eager to pick up Recitatif! What a great reading month you two had!! Lastly, I am reading Giovanni's Room this month & based off of your description of Between The World and Me I think I'll reread it once I'm finished with this Baldwin to see the similarities/inspirations. This is also my first Baldwin. Can't believe I've waited this long!

The Road and The Book Thief were 5 star reads for me. I just bought Recitatif on Pango just now while watching this and looked for White Nights, but they didn’t have it. I will keep my eye out for White Nights at the used book stores I frequent. Thank for all of the book feedback. Passing is on my TBR in my Libby app, but I did watch the movie version of Passing and it was so good, so I know the book will be better.

Great video! Sierra, you might like All American Boys for a fictional take on US race issues that is a great classroom read. The 10th graders read at my school and it sparks some great discussion

Beautiful explanation on Cormac's writing style in the Road being barren like the subject. This is also just how He writes too in some of his other books. I would HIGHLY recommend No country for Old men as the next Cormac read! The subject matter of that paired with the matter-of-fact writing style he has... leaves you on the edge of your seat holding your breath.

Immediately adding White Nights and Greek Lessons to my shopping cart 😆 I'm really curious to find out how you guys liked Abby Jimenez's book ( haven't read that one though ) I've only read "Just For the Summer" last month and it's easily one the best romance books I've read this year. It's up there with Happy Place by Emily Henry . Just saying 😂 Great wrap up as always 🤍

Wait, Sierra, how did we end up reading two of the same books this month? "Passing" and "Between the World and Me." As a side note, I might have cried more listening to the audiobook of "Between the World and Me" than I have while reading any other book in my life. I'm white, but because of other marginalized identities and experiences, I related so hard Coates' anger and constant fear and the way he described not being able to imagine the world "out there." I'm definitely not saying my experience has been the same. It never could be as since I am a white person. But that book made me feel seen is a way I really did not expect.

Oh, Passing is so good! I've read it twice (once in my undergrad English degree 10 years ago and again a couple weeks ago.) For people who didn't pick up on it (I definitely had to be told.), it's often read as being queer, also. People like Judith Butler have seen the relationship between Clare and Irene as being sexually charged. On my second reading, I could see why, too.

This video made me so happy. I watch booktube to keep up with what's going on in the book world and maybe get books to put on my tbr that I'll get to way off in the future, but its rare that I've read the books talked about. Passing, Between the World and Me (one of my favorite books), The Fire Next Time, and Recitatif?! What what?!

So glad you loved The Book Thief, Sierra!! Such an amazingly written book 😍 Can’t wait to hear both of your thoughts on Abby Jimenez in the next video! Guess I need to add White Nights to my TBR, I trust both Jon and Jack Edwards 😂 Also love that you guys did so many buddy reads (planned and unplanned) in July, so fun! I read 11 books in July and my top favorites were Just For the Summer (Abby Jimenez!!), The Things We Cannot Say, Parable of the Sower, and A Man Called Ove (I know Jon said it was just alright but I really liked it haha)!

Sierra! I just finished If An Egyptian Cannot Speak English and had to report back immediately LOL. I loved it! I'm a library reader, but I'm adding this to my (very short) Buy list. (Trying to keep the rest vague and avoid any kind of spoilers, but iykyk 😂) At the beginning, when I realized what the overall relationship was going to be, tbh I was skeptical. I wasn't sure I'd really care to read about that, and was worried there were too many chances for the ending to "ruin it". But then all of a sudden the writing was beautiful, I was flagging every other page, the culture/class/social issues in the context of the relationship brought it to a new level. And I wasn't bothered by the formats at all. I know the ending didn't work for everyone, but I was 100% satisfied.

Amazing vid as always! My TBR already has some new additions :) LOVED Girl, Woman, Other, so great to see that on the list. Also great to see you pick up Geraldine Brooks - she's Australian! - I quite liked March, but I ADORED People of the Book, that is so beautiful. For March, it is based on a character from Little Women by Louisa May Alcott, so would recommend you read that first if you haven't already!

Here’s my answers for the mid year freakout! Best books - Darius the great is not okay by Adib Khorram and Dungeons and Drama by Kristy Boyce, my beloveds <3 Best sequel - PJO Chalice of the Gods by Rick Riordan, it’s super relatable for me rn! New releases - The last bloodcarver by Vanessa Le Most anticipated release - PJO Wrath of the Triple Goddess Biggest disappointment - These Deadly Prophecies by Andrea Tang, it wasn’t what I expected it to be tbh :/ Biggest surprises - Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer, I tried to read it awhile ago but gave up, then I tried again in March and was pleasantly surprised! And the Fellowship of the Ring (so far, I’m still reading it!) Favorite new authors - Kristy Boyce, J.R.R Tolkien, and Hafsah Faizal Newest fictional crush - Jin from A Tempest of Tea by Hafsah Faizal Newest favorite character - Darius from Darius the Great is not okay! Book that made me cry - Darius the Great is not okay, it made me feel so many things Book that made me happy - the Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien, it’s so cozy! Most beautiful book - Cinder by Marissa Meyer (the newest cover is what I’m talking about) Most unhinged book - A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson End of year TBR - LOTR (lord of the rings), The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson, and As long as the lemon trees grow by Zoulfa Katouh

Unpopular opinion: In Memoriam is pretty much a Siegfried Sassoon/Wilfred Owen fanfic. Alice can’t shrug her AO3 past. If you want to read an actual WW1 literary account, I suggest Journey to the End of the Night by Louis-Ferdinand Céline.
