Those small one ton hand punches I find invaluable in my shop, I use it almost daily, I have both an arbour and a 3ton bench press, only pain with them is the nipple eventually wears, meaning lining up with a centre punch mark soon diminishes.

Hey This Old Tony, not sure if you'll see this comment or not but I feel the need to ask. I'm a machinists apprentice and I've always been taught not to dress to the right of the wheel but to the left so that the dresser doesn't kick off the magnet. At 5:36 you dress to the right. Can I ask why? Thanks

Coming to think of it, if it’s the concentrated heat that bumms the parts, what about gas welding, or brazing/soldering?

I own the same grinder. It works good but isn't nearly as entertaining as watching this guy narrate saw chain grinding.

I guessing Piano frames are made of cast iron not steel as CI is very hard stiff but brittle? Steel would give just a touch? so welding CI leaves a sort of half done brittle weld that can break like glass but you cant test for it too?

You need to hold a piece of wood behind the metal specially when you get near the end. Its the slightly folded back edge that keeps the work from collapsing. When you get near the end that edge has nothing to hold it so you press some wood against the edge from behind while spinning the last bit

Went to buy my $3 ER-11 collets for my new die grinder, than found that now AliExpress sellers started labelling the accuracy: A, AA, AAA/UP, supposed to be 15, 8 and 5 microns runout (1, 1/2 and 1/5 thou). Got a set of the UP/AAA grade, which looks much more well finished, debuted and waaay more polished than my previous cheapo-sets. Haven’t measured them yet.

also , from sealock & LockNstitch ; you can pin steel to cast and , if equipped , weld steel to cast , as nearly identical expansion/contraction rates

What's more, how does This old (cautious) Seagoat know that you're not the 'Crown Prince of Mississauga' looking for a mug to help him with his discreet transfer of millions? Let me know, especially if you have no idea what I'm on about.

Every time you’re taking the wire out of the puddle you are contaminating the end because you are out of the gas coverage then you are putting that contaminated end back into your puddle.

That is 99,9% sure gray cast iron! Edit : when everything fails you need to tap the material A LOT, i always used flux core with a shielding gas worked every time.

In Germany you can still get filing vices like that. as a fabricator we use them very often, in our apprenticeship it is tought to use files for fine work. Maybe look for ferriers vices, they also use them alot.
