I had to watch twice. First time I was so distracted by the granite wall. What a great stonework! I liked your analysis of bonsai styles. I think many people could increase their artistery by taking inspiration from the local environment instead of looking at what they do in Japan. Excellent vid as always.😀👍

True, one thing I've realized from living in Korea is that all the supposedly "best trees for bonsai" are just the trees that happen to grow in the area. Is the stonework good? It's outside my area of expertise. I do notice the line between the historical stonework and the modern rebuilding.

@@growingwithbonsai the best trees for bonsai is always the ones growing in your local area. No matter where you are. Ahh, I did not notice the line between old and new wall. I need to watch again 😀👍

I slightly disagree. I thought that massive trunked black pine was outstanding! But I do agree after the 1st 3 trees you might expect to see something different. Thanks for the video!

Thank you for another interesting video! It is very nice to see you again and I appreciate your thoughts on bonsai, Korean identity and the relevant historical aspects👌. Oita is a favorite of mine too ❤. I discovered her from a video of yours and follow her on instagram since then. Her work is such an inspiration!

I always enjoy your videos so it's a real treat when a new one comes out! I've never really looked at Korean bonsai so this was very interesting. I can see a stark comparison between Korean and Japanese bonsai. The Korean bonsai seems less pampered and doesn't care for the rules. Is this this perhaps a way to defy the Japanese way of bonsai? A great video and as always, I look forward to your next one. I hope that you are keeping well and enjoying autumn.

I think it's probably a general reflection of Korean vs Japanese aesthetics. More focus on the effect, less on formalism and process. But I'm getting beyond my knowledge and definitely don't want to speak for Korean bonsai, I'm just a curious observer. Autumn is taking its time! Still pretty hot. Thanks for your thoughts and I hope you're well, too.

I agree with your assessment of the Korean trees on display. Very thick, chunky, not much imagination or innovation happening there.

I don't want to be too harsh, it's a new collection and they will hopefully improve it in the future. I do wonder about the reason - conservatism, chosen by someone with not much knowledge of bonsai, or did they perhaps take over the collection of a single artist or collector?

Thank you! I enjoyed this video. One of the better overviews of a bonsai garden. Alot of time when people film a bonsai garden they spend minutes and minutes zooming in/out on the trees and bouncing from tree to tree. But you never really get a sense of the trees from all the zooming. Yours was very nice, and I have more interest in visiting/seeing the trees after your video

Great video superb editing. There is only one mistake with our trees and that is to kill it that is the best way to put our bonsai journey. My first tree was a crape myrtle, I kill it but I learn so much from that mistake. Keep up the great work.😄

Lovely video but that use of the paintbrush made me wince every time. It should only be bent a very small amount, like this. www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/4/47/Use-a-Chinese-Calligraphy-Brush-Step-9.jpg/v4-460px-Use-a-Chinese-Calligraphy-Brush-Step-9.jpg.webp

If you, instead of breaking the brand as with lst you can just everyday bend the branches just to the point where they start to break but don't brake. I find that after a season of this, the branches stay more or less where you want them without the bulging scars.

Hello good afternoon. I'm Gustavo, from Portugal. I really enjoy watching your KZbin channel. The reflections you make about bonsai help me in my reflections on what bonsai are and the relationship I have with plants. I have some questions for you. What is bonsai for you? Besides a hobby, techniques, beauty, what is bonsai for you? A path, a relationship, learning, connection with yourself? hug and good work.

This is such a well crafted video. A love letter to the Ginkgo, if you will. I am fortunate to have an old majestic ginkgo growing in my town and collected and germinated a bunch of seedlings this spring. I have about 30 seedlings that I hope to mold in various shapes in the future! Thank you for making this video.

I think it could be said that you have an obscure philosophy channel which uses bonsai for illustration rather than an obscure bonsai channel. I've given some thought to that oft-repeated statement that growing bonsai from seed takes too long. That only makes sense to me if your goal is to be the owner of a "finished" bonsai. For me, bonsai is something I do each day, much like a painter spends some of each day painting. The goal of a painter is not to own a finished painting, it is to create new paintings every day. The pace of bonsai is different from painting but it is enjoyable every day, not just on the day when you declare that a particular plant is "done".
@growingwithbonsai

Yes, and what happens when it's "finished"? There's no prize at the end, and would you feel like all the years of waiting were worth it? Interesting ideas.

Thank you! I think the audience for this channel will always be reasonably small; most people who watch bonsai videos are looking for instructional information, not thoughts about Leonard Cohen and Buddhism. But I decided a while back to just make the videos that I want to make, and I'm happy that there are some people who enjoy them.

Thing is… that short brought me to your channel because I thought it looked so good. The barrier to bonsai is extremely low but the pros make it look extremely high. At the end of the day, it’s just a tree. Don’t let negativity or criticism affect your ego, we all human, we fail, we learn, we become better. Take what you can from it and move on… just as in Bonsai… if you break a branch or make a mistake and have to cut something… let it go. Love your content, don’t let haters kill your mojo.

You can't draw conclusions based on just two small and young examples! We would need dozens of examples and a multi-year period: at least three years. 18 months is not enough to make any definitive conclusion.
