The Norvo tantrum of Gotta Be This or That dated back to the 1950s. It was a gag, or course. But, while it may have been suitable for a nightclub setting, it was hardly suitable for the Carnegie Hall stage. Having said that, overall the music in this 1974 Goodman Carnegie Hall performance came off infinitely better than the disastrous 1978 40th Anniversary Carnegie Hall Concert on London Records. Goodman had a tendency to self-destruct sometimes. The 1953 tour with Louis Armstrong comes to mind as well as his abhorrent behavior towards his musicians during the 1962 tour of the Soviet Union. I saw him several times with his Sextet at Waterloo Village in NJ in the late 1970s and his final big band performance in 1986 at Wolf Trap. He actually had more enthusiasm in 1986 but clearly was an ill man. He died a week later on 6/13/86.

Lou: I'm dying of a heart attack next year, Dr. Smith. Any suggestions? Jonathan: No surprise, since you've had three attacks, already. Lou: Hope you like all that Lost In Space dough you'll soon be making. Jonathan: Thanks. Just enjoy what little time you have, dear boy!

As riveting a performance in 2024 as it was back in the early 1960s when I first heard it as a college student. Great is forever. God bless the BGQ!

Convinced of the beauty they bring, these three men deliver a world-class performance. For me, this is the absolute best in terms of music, atmosphere and style. Their rendition of 'China Boy' during 'Carnegie Hall 1938' is even faster. Downright phenomenal.

In the late eighties I had the absolute pleasure of seeing Red Skeleton live at the Fox theater in Detroit. Wow. He did his skits, Guzzler Gin and some of his jokes. And then his sat down at a makeup table, and started telling us about his friend, Freddie. And as he talked he applied makeup. And in a few minutes you were watching Freddie the Freeloader talk about his friend Red.. All right in front of your eyes. He was, The Master.

hmmmm... it should be noted that contrary to the uploader's note about Mr. Costello and his FORMER partner Bud Abbott being close friends that by 1958 they were not even speaking to each other. It was about this time that Mr. Abbot filed a lawsuit against Mr. Costello and not long after that Lou Costello was diagnosed with cancer (a fact Bud Abbott did not discover until after he had died). Right/wrong/whatever: that is how it happened to the best of my knowlege.
