Isnt it still a decent grand? Two out of: spades coming home, diamonds coming home, heart finesse. And all can be explored.

I enjoy listening to what the players are thinking. Not really a fan of the scoring format, but the idea is to teach the game to the viewers who already have some background in the game.

@justinsmith236311 ай бұрын
The commentator exaggerated when he said you need 45 overtricks in 4 Clubs to score 1010. In fact you only need 44, a much easier proposition.

Is 2C keeping strong opponents out of the auction these days. I'm glad to be playing poker these days, doesn't sound like bridge is fun anymore
@willinnewhaven3285 Жыл бұрын
2H is basically a negative response, so you don't need five for a jump. However, on the hand he had, responding 1NT shows cards and he could show Hearts later if the auction continues. But, Kaplan, playing with Kay, jumped to 3H against us on Axx xxxx AJxx xx a NYC regional and no one commented at all.

I don't understand how the 7 of hearts was the 4th highest card in that suit (timestamp 4:20ish)

On hand 1, given the importance of guessing right, I'm surprised neither player chose to run the clubs and discard a spade in dummy. West has to make 4 discards and East has to make 3 discards. That might reveal something about the distribution. In order to do that you have to win the third trick with the Ace of Hearts in dummy to preserve entry to hand.

Last board. Declarer makes also if he leads diamond from dummy (instead of spade). If East ruffs, over-ruff, heart to dummy and spade ruff.

19:05 indeed, KR evaluates it at 8.2 points. I agree, it has good intermediates and purity. South should have upgraded her hand also for the same reason.

25:38 as declarer is playing south for the CK, and dummy has the 10 of clubs, playing the CJ can't ever work; declarer will just take a club finesse. The small club is better for hiding the position - though actually it doesn't matter either way really, as South should have CJ on HCPs, the odds of them upgrading a poor 9-count 6331 vul being very slim. Well played by declarer.

6.48 East was probably supposed to go up AS and play a club to break the defensive link for the spade ruff, wasn't he? If N had had AC and not KS probably he would have returned a spade, not a club.

How did you organise the translation and reading of the Chinese team's comments? It's absolutely excellent.

This is certainly an interesting venture, both in terms of the depth of commentary, and the intriguing analysis of the bidding styles of different cultures through the lens of these Chinese partnerships. Well done NewTricks.

What six ace bidding mean?

Two trump suits agreed, so you can count the 4 normal aces, and both 'kings of trumps' totaling 6

I must be honest, I will be a WNT + 5cM player for life. The advantages of 5cM (at the very least, 5c spade) show themselves over any 4cM system very quickly with just a few hours of play, but I remain unconvinced as to the advantages of SNT - it comes up less often, leads to space-consuming 2NT rebids in 1x-2y auctions (unless artificial methods are employed to help here), and is frequently abused resulting in possible missed slams. Meanwhile the WNT has the advantages of pre-emption, and importantly, removes WNT hands from 1x openers (so 1x openers promise either extra strength or shape). Any sensible runout system mitigates most of the impact of getting X'd - something the SNT isn't immune to itself, doubles of 1x-1y; 1NT-(X) auctions being very common. Personally, if I was to pick one system that I had to play the rest of my life, it would be WNT, 1C clubs or balanced with transfer responses, 5cM, weak-only multi 2D and Muiderberg 2M. I'd be content to switch to a SNT in 3rd and 4th seat vul.

Thank you for this very interesting discussion. I've just purchased Andrew's book and look forward to reading it. I'm one of the UK players who came to Bridge in the pandemic lockdowns and therefore through online play and instruction. This exposed me to a Bridge world that is largely, although not exclusively, played in 5 card majors and strong NT. So this is all very relevant.

Are you suggesting not opening the west hand?
@richardfarrer5616 Жыл бұрын
Once, due to a succession of unlikely events, my partner and I got.to play against Andrew Robson at table 1 in the EBU Summer Congress on Sunday afternoon (final session). Thanks to he and his partner having a bidding misunderstanding on one hand, we only lost 16-4, I recall. It was clear at the time that he plays on a completely different level from us mere mortals. And, if you are interested, next round we played against people who knew us at the club (West of England Bridge club in Bristol, also Andrew's old club in the 80s). They didn't fall for our shenanigans and we had another big loss, ending up barely in the top third of the field.

I'm first to admit I am nowhere near international standard... First board...one great hand or a catalog of errors? Especially at table 2. I mean...this could easily have been minus 200 (500 if doubked) opposite minus 790 rather than the results as scored.
