I don't want the GH-022 for a 39004 because it wouldn't read either of my DVD-R backups except PS2 DVD games, I had two of them and they never worked! I recommend the 39004 with the GH-019 motherboard!

We had the original 1995 model but after ff7 came out the fan died from overuse so we got a newer model. My dad said the fans were an issue in the first models.

I've been a proud PS2 gamer since 2001 with the fat model. Currently, I own 2 slims (SCPH-70012 from 2004 and SCPH-79001 from 2007) and after years of experience maintaining and restoring PS2s (every model from the SCPH-30001 model that launched in 2000 up to the final slim version: SCPH-90001 that was released in 2008), here's how I'd rank every PS2 slim model from best to worst in terms of reliability: 1. SCPH-79001 (2007): Internally shrunken motherboard makes this console light and super easy to maintain, the AC adapter that comes with this model is lighter and has less power draw, lasers still retain high reliability, and no issues with the ribbon cable scraping disks because the cable itself is mounted with sturdy plastic material instead of adhesive glue. 2. SCPH-90001 (2008): Final PS2 revision with enhanced BIOS, highly reliable lasers, power supply mounted in the hardware so you don't need an AC adapter, and sleek design. The only downsides are 1. this model cannot run Homebrew applications if the datecode has 8C on it because of patches on the BIOS and 2. the disk scraping issues from the ribbon cable returned with this model so you'll have to check on it every once in awhile. Other than that, this is a great model to have. 3. SCPH-77001 (2006): Basically an upgraded version of the SCPH-75001 model with better lasers, redesigned circuitry, and an updated BIOS to improve compatibility with PS1 titles and PS2 titles. This model's major downside is the the possibility of the disk scratching issue from the ribbon cable. Other than that, this is another decent model to have. 4. SCPH-70001/SCPH-70012 (2004): The very first slim PS2s. These are the only PS2s with hardware based PS1 backwards compatibility since it contains the PS1 MIPS 3000A CPU chip mounted in the motherboard. However, these models are a mixed bag since these are the shrunken versions of the last fat model (SCPH-50001 from 2003) and the shrinking weakened the reliability on these models. These models are heavily prone to overheating and the dreaded MechaCon crash where certain chips overdrive the laser as the console attempts to read unofficial disks or damaged disks and the crash could damage disk drive mechanisms and fry up the laser. The MechaCon crash fiasco resulted in a messy lawsuit for Sony to the point where they had to revise the hardware to add circuitry that requires the console to power off anytime the MechaCon crash is about to occur and update the MechaCon's software to version 6.04 or higher. 5. SCPH-75001 (2005): This is the first ever PS2 model to have hardware based backwards compatibility axed and replaced with PowerPC based emulation for PS1 titles. All of this was was nothing but a cost cutting maneuver by Sony so they could sell PS2s at a cheaper price. The MIPS 3000A CPU was replaced with a PowerPC CPU called Deckard. The changes to the PS1 compatibility really affected the console's software, causing compatibility issues with numerous PS1 titles and a handful of PS2 titles. This model also uses a cheap laser that has its own fair share of reliability issues.
