Galaxy, easily. I grew up on and love all three of them, but man does Galaxy hit every right note with me.

I really dig Galaxy and 64. Sunshine's controls have always felt too sloppy jalopy to me.

Never grew up with any if these. I was explicitly limited to 2D games on the DS. I wouldn't get the opportunity to play Super Mario 64 till I bought a used DS on ebay that happened to come with the Super Mario 64 DS cartridge. I played and almost beat it. It's a game I respect rather than like because without it I never would've played Super Mario 63 growing up. That game spoiled the mystical experience of exploring Peach's Castle for me. Super Mario Galaxy was a more favorable experience for me but i halso haven't played it in nearly two years. I don't know where I left off but I can't imagine I was close to finishing the game.

64>galaxy>sunshine Ive played 64 countless times and loved it every time. Dont care much for speedruns but theyre neat. Galaxy is incredible and the storybook gets me every time. Never really got into sunshine (yet at least, only played a few levels)

sunshine>64>galaxy i find sunshine to have the most ambitious and interesting design, while galaxy has the simplest, easiest and imo laziest. 64's good but it has a solid chunk of stages i find boring. sunshine has wonky physics in places but i'll take some jank if it means having cool ideas that are generally well executed. the 'chuckster' and 'sandbird' stuff is really overhated imo on the flipside, i feel like galaxy is beloved only due to gen z nostalgia. it has a strong aesthetic, but it's almost entirely devoid of any challenge, powerups are super one-note and stages are super linear but still give off the illusion of being open. i think it's boring and only a couple stages really utilize their gimmicks well (freezeflame, flipswitch, space junk).

Galaxy is fun, but the weakest of the three, Galaxy 2 improved the gameplay and the level progression by using a more traditional Mario level select map. The main Issue I have with Galaxy (which I did play a lot as a child) is that it doesn't feel as replayable. For me 64 is my favourite because I find it's the easiest for me to go back to, the castle rarely changes, it just becomes more open. Sunshine was cool back in the day but I find I get bored with it the easiest, Isle Delfino was neat but to me perosnally was the most boring hub world, I didn't really enjoy all the weird goo piranha plant battles got really boring after the second one and I never really felt the desire to explore. Galaxy was fun but really linear, the Hub world was fun to explore and had a few extra levels and lots to interact with while not feeling bland, but it also felt so linear to the point where I never really cared about going back to look for secrets, and the hub could've used some secret stars like 64 and Sunshine instead of just Hungry Lumas unlocking additional levels.

Galaxy and it’s not even close. M64 is great and nostalgic but it heavily relies on glitches and speed running. I never really like sunshine as the aspect of controls or even the gameplay, but Galaxy offers the best soundtrack (imo), a great story, and the controls aren’t that bad. The graphics are also beautiful even for today

I don't think Mario 64 *relies* on glitches and speedrunning to be fun, I think that's just how the internet has evolved to play that particular game.

What sith said. I just recently did a 120 of the game without doing glitches and still had a ton of fun

I've been playing Mario 64 since I was a little kid and never used glitches to beat a level, although I have messed around with them for the heck of it. I actually get really bored of speed runs of Mario 64 because I feel they took away the initial fun of the full game for just the quickest way to the credits.

I think I'm most nostalgic for Sunshine. Galaxy is the most polished though. But 64 is the easiest to return to so... I'm going with Sunshine as my favorite.
