The machine saves me time. :) I honestly don't have the time or patience to sit there to wind up a yarn puddle by hand. I can wind up the yarn within seconds with the machine!

I think it’s more of a helpful thing to have but not a necessity for sure! You can also look into the hand crank kind! They’re more affordable and some people prefer them :)

Answering a comment, As per yarn bowls, Ya know what ELSE works really well in place of a "yarn" bowl ? A BOWL. If you don't have a yarn bowl use a mixing bowl. My favorite is an extremely heavy antique one, but nearly any will do.

I ALWAYS roll my skeins into a ball before I start. It doesn’t take long, it’s relaxing, and it saves big headaches from the skein loosening and getting tangled.
