Muchas gracias, una consulta, ¿ cuál es el tamaño de una guitarra barroca, ancho, alto, largo y longitud del tiro?
@PabloSoriano
@PabloSoriano 5 ай бұрын
Gracias a ti. No existen medidas estandarizadas. Las guitarras barrocas que se construyen hoy en día se basan en los pocos modelos conservados. Las medidas varían bastante entre ellas. Stradivarius, Voboam o Sellas son los modelos más recurrentes, cada uno con sus particularidades.

Using a lathe to do the final fitting is overkill and extremely difficult. That's why it's normally done with peg sharpeners made from the reamer and a set of spare chisel blades.

I completely agree. Even the same bridge with a little less wood sounds different

I have a 7-string treble viol. It arrived string-less and fret-less. Turns out you're expected to know stuff when purchasing a viol. I've experimented with bridges enough to know that there's a huge variation in the way your instrument sounds and performs depending on the bridge you go with. Just for a lark I had a brass bridge made for one of my violas. To say that it makes that viola piercingly loud would be an understatement.

Thank you Pablo, to be honest I’m a beginner you probably worked that out yourself and I’m considering attempting a Herman Houser replica parlour size to start but I’m thinking about using Brazilian Rosewood wood for the back, sides and neck and Indian red cedar top still undecided on the finger board, I sore your video and thought that’s interesting and making a mould seemed a far better idea than purchasing one considering the price of them.

@@PabloSoriano thank you for your encouragement can I ask one last thing , with me being new to the world of guitar building do you have any thoughts or recommendations on how I can achieve this passion we share. I suppose I am asking should I learn trial and error or find someone who is willing to teach me and if your thoughts are the later then any recommendations for tutoring for example an academy, or a great luthier willing to show a 45 year old man some new tricks.

@@stephenrimmer5629 KZbin is a very good and achievable way. There are a lot of good channels. Essay and error will occur naturally, but be careful because tonewood is not cheap. The more you learn from others mistakes, the more time/money you will save. I teach 10 days intensive courses in August, here in Spain, but maybe is not your best option… I ouse to ffer also online training, but not at this moment… considering all the above, I will keep watching videos until I feel enough confortable with, at least, several tasks…

Thank you, Pablo; this is exactly what I needed and wanted to see. I'm making a solid-body electric 5-string violin. I'll be cutting the wood for the neck from Black Walnut (the choice of the person who commissioned the instrument), then make the heel and the angle to insert in the mortise. Then I'll make the mortise itself, removing wood from the Maple of the body. The body (again, this is the idea of the person who commissioned the instrument) is made from two pieces of Maple that have been glued together, after which a 4/4 violin template was used to make the violin shape. So, I'll be cutting the mortise from, essentially, a solid piece of hard Maple WITH the back button wood already part of the wood used for the back plate. I'll be cutting through some end grain (lol), wish me luck. In retrospect, I should have glued in a piece of Spruce for the upper block. I may actually do that:) Thanks again, Pablo. Best, David Burham, luthier

Hello! Why the caustic soda?

@PabloSoriano 3 жыл бұрын

@willmorrison1022

Ebony is not the best choice of woods for pegs, it's got too much grit in it and it will wear out the holes in your peghead. Rosewood or any other oily wood that is low in silica would be a better choice. Traditionally, fruit woods like pear have been used, no silica, and the wood is very pretty as well. Certainly strong enough for gut strings as well. Ebony has been used in violins and the like, but again, they tend to destroy the holds in pegboxes and are usually replaced with other woods.

@PabloSoriano 3 жыл бұрын
I agree. I like boxwood apart from fruit wood.
@willmorrison1022
@willmorrison1022 3 жыл бұрын
@@PabloSoriano That is also a good choice. Anything that doesn't contain a lot of sand in it so the holes stay round and the right size longer. Purpleheart would look very neat, but would destroy holes even faster than ebony.

Why do you iron the wood before planing it?
@PabloSoriano
@PabloSoriano 3 жыл бұрын
I apply water and hot because that way it’s easy to obtain a continue shaving. If i don’t use the steam, I broke the shaving due to its thickness. Wood fibres expand and become softer. It’s a little help for planning even though you can check a lot of strength is needed. I hardly recommend to use the plane between 4 hands: two for pushing down and two for pulling forward...

Could you go into more detail with the process of tying the string around the veneers? What exactly is the purpose of that step? How does it not all come undone?
@PabloSoriano
@PabloSoriano 3 жыл бұрын
The cord is only a way to space the veneers in order to have a good clearance. If you don’t put something in between them, they will not stain correctly because they will remain attached one to each other.
