In this project I needed a 5 strips purfling for a treble viol. You can't buy 0.3 mm veneer, so I made my own using pearwood and limewood. Then I dyed my pearwood shavings using what is supposed to be the old master's process. If you need to make your own veneer like I did, a pair of extra hands will be welcome when using the plane: two for pushing down and two for pulling forward. This is the most challenging part. I will show in a near future where I use all this purfling. Thank you very much for watching and don't hesitate to leave any comments.

Could you go into more detail with the process of tying the string around the veneers? What exactly is the purpose of that step? How does it not all come undone?

The cord is only a way to space the veneers in order to have a good clearance. If you don’t put something in between them, they will not stain correctly because they will remain attached one to each other.

Why do you iron the wood before planing it?
@PabloSoriano
@PabloSoriano 3 жыл бұрын
I apply water and hot because that way it’s easy to obtain a continue shaving. If i don’t use the steam, I broke the shaving due to its thickness. Wood fibres expand and become softer. It’s a little help for planning even though you can check a lot of strength is needed. I hardly recommend to use the plane between 4 hands: two for pushing down and two for pulling forward...

Hello! Why the caustic soda?
@PabloSoriano
@PabloSoriano 3 жыл бұрын
It cleans and open the wood pore. Thicker veneer could not be properly dyed in the middle if you don’t wash your wood before with caustic soda
