Sorry 1 more question, I used to have a fuel tank, like you, for my kitchen kit but I'd wake up in the AM and try to boil water for coffee just to find the tank frozen. I've since switched to the MSR type with white gas and have never had that issue again. Did you run into this out there?
@lilchaphikesКүн бұрын
Never had an isobutane can freeze.

Last summer I ran into a Ranger in the Tahoe NF and they cited people for not carrying approved bear cans. I have the BearVault 500 so I was safe but I asked the Ranger about carrying something soft sided like the ZPacks, they said the bear can can't be soft sided and it illegal in that NF to hang food bags. I was wondering with required-by-law equipment like a bear can, did you get approval from all the different agencies to run something like that and/or hang it? Or did you just get lucky?
@lilchaphikesКүн бұрын
I carried a BV500 for the sections they’re required. And I did get checked in Yosemite 3 times.

Should have rocked some plastic bread bags in those wet shoes, thats an old school trick!
@lilchaphikes2 күн бұрын
That works if you’re in wet terrain for a short time. Wearing plastic bags for days/weeks means walking in sweaty wet socks.

Holy cow, the weather change! From cold, to hot, to cold. Just epic. And on those little hills they call mountains back there… says a California Sierra chauvinist, 😂 all that rain too, I don’t know how you guys do it. I love it. The joy of dealing with the suffering.

I love watching your dogs having fun - but I have a question: In Wilmington, North Carolina, three dogs died after frolicking in a pond, while another succumbed after a swim in Lake Allatoona, Georgia. A common enemy likely led to the deaths of all four dogs: liver failure brought on by ingesting water contaminated with toxic blue-green algae. Do you know if that lake is algae free?

He doesn't like much more than that. I still haven't finished watching your PCT videos so it's weird seeing you back to regular life. Thanks for sharing. I love dogs so this was awesome to watch. ‘You can’t choose the weather but you can choose your attitude’ great quote 😊 my job keeps me outside every day year round and living in Alberta, Canada the winters can be questionable but I love it!! even weekends we are out and about all weathers. I’ve watched your videos kinda backwards starting with your PCT thru hike and enjoyed that so much i wanted to ‘experience’ your life on the AT. Thank you for taking the time to put these experiences out there for all to see. You are inspiring. I binged watched the PCT and I will be binge watching this one. Then….then I MAY plan to thru hike my own PCT or AT. It seems,to me, many people start with the AT. Is this so? What was your why for doing the AT first? Thanks chap!
@lilchaphikes10 күн бұрын
I think people that live on the east side of the country tend to hike the AT first. Those on the west PCT first.

This was just amazing! I watched the whole journey and loved it for a bunch of reasons. I’ve done the JMT twice and did Yosemite into Desolation and can’t rap my mind around how hard what you did is. Just mind boggling and incredibly inspiring. To me you seemed so upbeat in the face of such adversity and uncertainty, and a whole lot of Type 2 and some definiate type 3 fun. Always up to appreciate the beauty, even after all those hot and not so scenic miles in northern CA. I’m definitely going to watch your AT adventure. Thank you and good luck

Hawn... ok. Another site to add to my Missouri bucket list. Long drive from KC area, but no doubt worth it. I love Bell mountain area, and the Irish wilderness. Hercules Glade is nice too. I'm hoping to do a hike or 2 down in that area before it gets too cold
@hikerstl15 күн бұрын
Well, I have one thing in common with you. My first backpacking trip was in Hawn State Park as well, but back in the mid 1980's. We went to the Alpine Shop which was in Webster Groves if I remember right, bought our gear and off we went,. That trip started a life long backpacking obsession. My wife and I never did any long trips, but we inched out every bit of our vacation time to do trips all over the western US, Canada and Alaska. I retired early and did backpacking mostly in the Sierras (Summers) nd Utah (spring and fall). We also did several years of backcountry ski trips in Idaho and the 10th Mountain hut system. But I have fond memories of Hawn and other areas we backpacked in the spring and fall. I estimated one time that I have spent well over of year of my life in a test. Thanks you for reminding of those days. I am now past the age that backpacking is possible so it's nice to be reminded of those happy days.
