@@sjm.photos I took some shots of planes in not great light a couple of years ago, on the A6600. The ISO wasn’t high but the images were very noisy and pretty rubbish . Any idea what went wrong? First shot in burst was acceptable, the rest were out of focus. Not sure if EFCS was on or not. Hadn’t had problem before. The RX10 is great for shooting planes. No problems there.

I am mainly a bird photographer, also taking pictures of other wildlife and anything interesting or beautiful. My main camera is a Sony a7Riv with the Sony 200-600mm lens, a lovely bit of kit that has stood up to use well. But of course that is no use for close shots, has no depth of field, and all the usual limitations you would expect, so I also carry a second camera, and a high-end bridge camera is the most convenient thing for other general-purpose shots and video. After flirting with various cameras I settled on an RX10iv. It is probably the best performer of any bridge camera in the quality of its output, both in stills and in 4K video, where its intelligent 2x digital zoom is so good that you can really not tell that it isn't shot through a genuine 1200mm lens. BUT ... there are some very serious buts, almost all of them to do with build quality. I have had five RX10ivs, because two of them failed within weeks when the overcomplicated combined on-off switch, shutter button and zoom lever fell to bits, and I really mean that it disintegrated and loose parts fell out. Normally I would have had two, a main and a spare, but I had to have three because they were so unreliable. All three have shown exactly the same faults, so it isn't a case of one rogue. First, the thing is supposed to be weatherproof. I know that doesn't mean waterproof, but in fact the camera is far more sensitive to a few seconds' exposure to mild drizzle than many cameras I've used that don't claim to be weatherproof at all. A bit of damp and it starts flashing a warning that an unauthorised accessory is attached. This sounded as if water was getting into the flash shoe through its very inadequate blanking cover, so I sealed this up tighter than a duck's arse, but still got the warning so the wet must be getting in somewhere else. Second, in cold weather -- not even freezing, just below 5°C -- the zoom overruns, going to maximum or minimum when you try to halt it. Third, the autofocus constantly cuts out or won't start. You can generally get it going by switching autofocus modes, but by that time you've lost your shot. Also when I'm using continuous autofocus for video and pointing the camera at a well defined object that ought to hold the focus, it forgets what it's doing and wanders off. Fourth, all of them have been losing functions from the 'Scene' menu. I only ever use two of these, the one for handheld night shots and the one for 'landscape' where it takes shots at different focuses and combines them. In both these modes it is (or was) taking several shots and combining them. It is this ability to take and combine multiple shots that has failed, disabling both functions. OK, I am hard on cameras, dragging them around in all conditions. But over several years the a7Riv has stood up to it, and the RX10s have collapsed. So, despite the lovely results, I have had to stop using the RX10iv because of its many crippling faults in use. I'm now using a Panasonic Lumix FZ2000 -- same sensor but less zoom and more primitive generally, with a lower bit rate for video. I miss the Sony's performance, but frankly it is a pig of a machine. The Lumix doesn't claim to be weatherproof but is actually more reliable in damp conditions than the Sony, and it has one great advantage: you can get fairly close to an object at full zoom, while with the Sony you had to stand 15 feet away so it was useless for filming insects. I miss the Sony, but I am relieved to have something that can actually be relied on to work.

pretty much every bad point you mention isnt true also trust me i have absolutely abused mine even dropped it onto concrete and watched it bounce 10 feet accross it only cracking the lens hood. ive been out this morning at -4/-5C for 3 hours and the camera worked absolutely fine no issues. never had an issues with the on off switch/shutter button, use the camera in AFC all the time sorted. the accessory when wet on the hot shoe isnt water getting in its a droplet of water connectting 2 pins on the mulity part of the hotshoe every sony does it if you dont have the cover on the hotshoe, biggest mistake you are doing is using it in jpeg and auto modes. Manual its a beast. all weather conditions i have multiple videos showing ive soaked the thing through and even when i had 1 and the only one issue ive had on the first camera which had taken over 400000 shots. was the front lens element and sony decided to replace the camera at my cost but for the same as a lens cost. win for me. only reason was because they found 1 dried up droplet of water inside so considering i had soaked the camera hundreds of times using it in bad weather even held it under pouring water. thats all that was let in. the weather sealing works very well. the last bit is bullshit. the 600mm lens can focus at 72cm from the subject which means you had the switch on the lens to 3 metres to infinity. rather than full range. so basically what you have written is all of its faults well most of them are User Error. the rx10iv is an absolute beast camera not a pig as you call it.

Yeah, you wonder if anyone involved with the design of most cameras actually uses them--the first mod I do with any camera is replace the stock eyecup with one that actually blocks stray light. I just ordered an RX10IV and unfortunately, so far I've not been able to locate an eyepiece that looks like it would likely work, but thanks for at least opening the conversation, and good luck to all in this pursuit (please share if you strike gold)! I tried the links, but no US shipping, so I'm out of luck there. Can you 3D print rubber? Obviously, Sony's of no help, having just killed off the line, rather than doing the right thing and bringing out a Mk V. I guess you can't blame them, as the market for bridge cameras is small, due to mass ignorance regarding the mistaken belief that bigger is always better. My Lumix G9-based go-to kit enables me to get images I'd never be able to get with a larger system, but there are times when you need an all-in-one solution, and as good as my FZ1000 is, the RX10IV is clearly more capable (mainly, it's weatherproof).

In fact the world of photography has been dead for a decade. Pros are closing their doors & pros can't compete with amateur photographers' prices. ATG told decades ago to camera companies that many beginners & amateurs & photo/video cheaters want video with photo shooting. And they laughed at ATG. Facts: 1. Hasselblad & all film cameras are dead 2. Olympus 4/3 is dead 3. Olympus m4/3 sold to a new company that can't make 40M+ sensors 4. All mirror cameras were abandoned/discontinued. Making thousand of people loosing their jobs. 5. Cellphones & tablets are the normal today. * Based on 35mm format, a pro camera body costs $2,000.00 in 2000. Now hitting $6,000.00. Many pros can't afford it. Do you really want to pay $6K four 40M?

far from dead/ mobile phones are ok still not brilliant but do make good tools for some things. olympus were shite anyway. hassleblad have been using sony sensors now for years and are incredible miles better than film ever was. dslr is old tech like film cameras. mirrorless is the newer better format which gives a lot more options and all round a better camera and experience. plenty of pros shooting £2-6500 cameras they can afford them like me we just dont buy them every time a new one comes out. no need.
