@LaurenAbbeyАй бұрын
Hey! For me-- I've never felt like having a mac hindered me in any way, and I've honestly enjoyed using one throughout my undergrad. But this is also just my experience!! I would try and talk with students currently in your program because they'll know if you really require a PC instead. Good luck!

What kind of work do u start out with in the lab cuz like i keep thinking im not skilled enough to be able to help
@LaurenAbbeyАй бұрын
I remember feeling this way too! You'll probably start off shadowing a grad student or more senior undergrad in the lab, before doing anything on your own! Don't be afraid to ask any and all questions you have. Keep in mind that everyone starts off by not really knowing much-- no one is expecting you to immediately come in and take over a project or contribute loads of new ideas. Best of luck to you-- have fun with the journey!!

Hi Lauren, fellow Ram here! I’m a junior biotech major at URI. First of all, I love your videos! I have found them very inspiring and helpful while pursuing my own undergrad journey. Second, I’ll be applying to grad programs this fall, and I’m wondering if you would consider dedicating a video to sharing your experience with the PhD application process?
@LaurenAbbeyАй бұрын
Hey Jessica!! So nice to 'meet' you! Thank you so much for all the support-- it really means a ton :) I'm already planning on recording a PhD/Grad School application tips video in the near future so be on the lookout!!

I’m glad!! I try to get the same amount that I would get on a normal night which for me is 7-9hrs. It may seem like a lot but I really believe sleep is key to performing your best on exam day!

This was a fun vlog to watch. I've been thinking about going back to school for a 2nd degree and what you said about feeling like there's not a lot of content related to Ph.D. students is how I feel about there being a lack of non-traditional content. I can't wait to see more of your academic journey. WIll we see more vlogs from other college visits?

Hi Lauren! I just wanted to ask a research career question: I’m a budding first year undergrad working in a lab at uni, hoping to go to grad school too. How do I get from a state of not knowing much or anything at all in the grand scheme of research, to a place where I can make intellectual contributions to the project? I’m struggling to see how to get to that next level. Love your videos, you’re such an inspiration and I hope to get to where you are one day!
@LaurenAbbey3 ай бұрын
Hey! This is a really tough idea, and something that I still struggle with as an undergrad. I think that it comes down to the time and effort you put into learning the research you're doing. I highly recommend taking the time to read pertinent papers in your field and above anything else-- talk to your PI and grad students!! Ask any and all questions you have. Eventually, you'll build up enough background on the lab projects, confidence in the lab, and intuition to start gathering new ideas for the projects you're working on! I really appreciate the kindness and I wish you the best of luck!

I’ll add three things as a medical engineering student: 1. some sort of noise canceling earbuds/headphones are essential for me esp. for finals season 2. I am on a Windows laptop and I’m so glad I am - a lot of programms for Python/Mathematica are so much easier to use on a windows than a mac 3. always have food with you (I like nuts and a granola bar, definitely something that will keep you full for at least a class) Everything else I totally agree with, my iPad has saved me many times!
@marcwhitken8143 ай бұрын
Great video, as are the rest of yours. My son is likely starting at URI in the fall of '24 for Civil Engineering (already accepted and deposits done). I think he has everything you showed in this video except for the iPad (his is pre-pandemic). His high school backpack is def on its last legs.

Lauren hi, ım writing from Türkiye. I would like to ask you kinda typical question. İ am studying chem right now but planing to switch majors, ı always wanted to become an engineer so I feel that this is a pretty good choice for me given my circumstances. But I still dont know what to do with my life tbh. I feel interested in software development, energy sector, embedded systems and pretty irrelevant aspects of engineering and science. I know that I gotta try gaining some experince but cause of major restrictions and lack of these kinds of innovation attempts in my environment, I cant seem to create any opportunity like that. So I wanted to ask your opinion. I would appreciate it so much if you answer this comment. Thank you for your content amd efforts. You inspire a lot of people❤
