Shining the light through is a great idea but doesn't work that well for carbon fins - slightly better on thin 'soft' version carbon Mako fin blades. The clamp is a much better idea but on a carbon fin you would need a backing plate to spread the load to make sure not to crack the carbon on clamp-up. I mis-drilled my carbon fins (Mako) because it moved during the drilling and alignment process. Fiberglass is also much easier to drill through than carbon. There is a clean up process after drilling the holes in carbon. The side rib supports are much easier on your fins - the Mako side ribs are much thicker and stiffer, much harder to maneuver into place. I made the mistake of putting the fin pocket in the oven to "gently" heat it but this just wrinkled up the foot pocket edges where your foot goes into the "shoe". Good lessons learned - wish I had seen this vid before starting my assembly.

This promotes Winching using a very heavy rod and line and winching using the rod holder ,rail,or over the gunnel to fight the fish..If this is you then I sudjest you take up golf..Fishing is a sport..And this is unsportsmanlike..Are you that desperate to catch a fish..Use a teaser with a rod and lure set up behind it..And Use a line appropriate for the size of the fish..Tight lines

Both work perfectly! However, hot glue is easier to remove if necessary…. So for me the smartest answer is “the smallest hammer to do the job” but if you like epoxy, that is cool too😁

You would be surprised of how tough hot glue is. I'm a bladesmith and one day i wanted to try it to follow very old methods from a book. Basically the glue was still warm, but i left it to cool a few seconds too much, and it took me 45 minutes to remove the handle from the blade. So i would say, a properly mounted blade with hot glue will take a LOT of abuse, at least more than would be necessary to destroy the blade or the handle.

Hey there, I like seeing someone doing it the proper way lol. I put a ton of goop under the footpocket and cyano on the horns. I find that screws cause a weakpoint, so I don't drill anymore.
@finbombvideo
@finbombvideo Жыл бұрын
Screws wont cause a weakpoint. Its the improper drilling, aka the wrong bit, or an old dull bit that shreds the hole or causes pre-cracking, o the wrong size screw, or over tightening. With that said some foot pocket/blade combinations will definitely benefit from some sort of flexible adhesive. If you question which combos need it, people should seek out an experienced blade replacer to make that call for them. The combination I use (leaderfins and omer sting rays) do not need it. I hope your replacement goes well👍🏽😁

What keeps the rod from bending when a big fish hits one of the sides, and decides to chew on it with drag? Also, what is the main top rod made of (I assume stainless steel) and what size? Really like the video, gonna make one, but just wanted to ask. Thanks!
@finbombvideo
@finbombvideo 2 жыл бұрын
Well, the design has a “V” in it to support the stainless bar, but the hook is inline, so the drag of a fish would pull off that. Any bait with no hook would be spit out or just fall out of a fish’s mouth.

Excellent video. I wish I had watched this first. I recently installed some fins a bit off center of the foot pocket. I drilled the holes well centered on the blades - but the screw holes on the foot pocket are a bit off center on the foot pocket itself. I didnt imagine that the pocket would have that flaw and did not drill through the front of the pocket like you have shown. I was considering drilling new holes carefully if they don’t overlap, or maybe putting epoxy to fill the existing holes. Do you have any suggestions?
@finbombvideo
@finbombvideo 2 жыл бұрын
I am glad my video was helpful! I think epoxying your old holes and drilling into the patch or extremely close to the patch would require a lot of skill and luck to work out as well as you would like, with that said, redrilling holes that are at least 3/8” away from your old holes should be fine under normal stress, i would even say basic epoxying snd sand flattening your old holes couldn’t hurt either with new holes drilled. Since I cannot see your exact blades and pockets, you might want to get over to your local dive shop in person if possible and see if there is someone experienced with blade installs available if you think you would be more comfortable that way. Good luck!

@@finbombvideo If I shift the holes over laterally a bit, and also pull the fin out further a little, the new holes would be 3/8 away. But I am wondering if I could also widen the existing holes a little, so as to have more lateral play for positioning the fin before screwing it down and attaching the rails? I figure that maybe with the screws and plate and also rails attached that it would hold in place well

Great video. I see that you didn't add a tease splash bird. Would that make it more attractive? Also, where do you buy the soft squids? I see them in ebay but, do you get them somewhere else? Thank you!
@finbombvideo
@finbombvideo 2 жыл бұрын
A bird probably wouldn’t do much other than help it have lift in the water, which is not a bad addition, but isn’t totally necessary and is an extra expense. And for squids, amazon, or ebay, or cabelas, or a local saltwater tackle shop will have them. I hope yours turns out well!

Where do you find the stainless rods at that length? Most of the welding rods that are made of ER316 steel are only 36 inches long. What size sleeved swivels did you use and where did you buy it from? The largest I found was 3/0 and it shows an outer diameter of 3mm which is less than the 1/8" rod diameter (3.2mm) Where did you buy that squid from? The hoochies are easier to find, but this squid with the stripped pattern seems harder to find.

@finbombvideo
@finbombvideo 2 жыл бұрын
You definitely can, that would help at 3-5 mph or if your rod tip is very close to the freeboard…. If you troll this rig from higher rod holders or an outrigger with a super sturdy snap release it will bounce in top no problem at all, the stainless rod is robust and durable but i really want to try this rig with carbon fiber or a super light fiberglass, therefor decreasing weight….. but for the price of stainless, it is a great argument to just use it and catch fish and worry about other stuff😂
