because most film critics are very old. They don't accept the psychology of the characters and only their life experiences. Honestly, I don't like movies with Leonardo DiCaprio, he's not my type, but it's good that you like them. Just because he's not my gender doesn't mean you have to hate it because you don't live by my criticism (of the film). However, adults, including the elderly, have experienced many things in life, some good and some bad, but usually they intensify the bad. Why? Because it's a trauma, the old people don't want to admit it but this happens to them. Anything that gets them out of that sadness or let's say from that sadness with hidden happiness they consider garbage. Why? Because they don't like psychological concepts and don't want to get help from the others. They don't think they can be saved and thus don't accept the new. And the old people grew up with fewer psychological concepts than us. Why? Because the world evolves but not as you think. Movies with scarecrows are messages of saving the world. The old people seek attention from their grandchildren, they want to impose on their grandchildren how to see the world and thus they think that they have to see the world as a prison in order to be saved, the old people lived in a much darker world than us but they have to - we are saving them, not them but the future generations, we must once and for all prevent this war between generations and psychology from evolving. And there is another thing, there are many old people in the world who do not retire, that is, they practically accept that prison inside them and want to- lure others as well, but in a way that is not necessarily visible.I am from abroad

To me, the ending is a fantasy. Strawberry definitely opens the door, but I don't think she's wearing a bikini. That's how Mikey sees her from now on.

I didn't like this movie, especially coming from The Florida Project which is a masterpiece in its own right. I definitely went in with high hopes, but as the movie went on it got more and more repetitive and the whole thing with the accident coming out of left field into the plot felt like the movie struggling for somewhere to go. For a minute I thought that him causing an accident would end up coming back on him, like the young girl's mom or family member would be someone injured or killed in that accident too, thus causing his dream of taking her away to crumble. But no, they didn't choose the way that would justify the suddenness of the accident in the story. But YOU KNOW it's gotta fall apart somehow. That's just how these movies go. So I kept waiting thinking, the ending is where it's all going to pull together, but man I thought the ending was a huge miscalculation. It was basically a copy of the brilliant ending of The Florida Project, but way worse. It was like the filmmaker thought, "Oh this retreat into fantasy ending thing was a popular and talked about point in my last film. I don't know how to end this movie, so I'll just do it again!" The Florida Project ending was so good because it was heartbreaking and totally understandable choice in the face of the child being taken from her mother. This one was like, "what? seriously?" Afterwards I totally understood why Red Rocket isn't talked about on the same level as The Florida Project. I thought the best parts of the movie were the supporting characters, like the mom and the wife and the family of weed dealers. Those were super fun characters who felt real. I kinda wished the movie was about them lol.

Great review of a great movie! I really like the idea that art is not supposed to confirm us in our believes. Instead it is supposed to challenge us. Sort of force us to thoroughly analyze and try to understand anything different from us. Instead of just conform to some ideal or group of people.

My only problem is the ending left me hanging, and I didn’t appreciate that. I want to know what happened to Mikey and Strawberry. Did she finally see through Mikey’s lies or did she naively follow him to become a porn star in California? Also, why didn’t Mikey attempt to get his money back from his wife, either by getting a gun and steal his money back from her, or by calling the police saying he was robbed? I feel Trump would have resorted to both (and he actually did IRL with the election against Biden when he lost). Edit: I also somewhat feel that Mikey didn’t technically do anything wrong. Sure, he used his wife and her mom as a place to stay, but he did pay the entire rent for them. He did cause Lonnie to get locked up, but technically Lonnie chose to drive like that, no one forced him to do anything, and he did use his wife and make him think he was gonna get back with her, but shit happens in relationships and she should have turned him away, and lastly he did have sex with a minor, but she was only 3 weeks short of being 18, and the age difference was still a lot, but, it’s not the same as him getting with a 12 year old girl, and she ultimately would have benefited from the porn industry too. All that to say that technology speaking, Mikey did nothing wrong, yet he is still a person of low moral fiber. I’d give this movie a solid 9/10. I think this could have been the beginning of a new genre like Pulp Fiction was if it weren’t for the shitty ending. Just my two cents though.

all I can say is I first watched the David Suchet version of this story, then watched this one back to back. I found myself hating the 2022 version more and more with each moment. I don't think the person writing these movies is a fan of Agatha Christie, more someone that is given a base idea of the story and told who the killer is. As for the backstory part there is a story that goes into Poirot's past when he was a young man before the world war I, "The Chocolate Box," and lets just say it was very backstory.

I have two main problem with most modern film critics. The first is that they often seem all too eager to hate movies, and use strong language to do so, sort of implying that they think it's a superior perspective, and that people who disagree just don't know any better. And the second is that they seem unable to recognize and convey the values of simpler, more block-buster movies. A blockbuster usually isn't supposed to be the same as an arthouse film. So it seems kind of ridiculous to me that they tend to be judged based on the same criteria. I just wish more people could criticize movies with a positive outlook. Just because something is flawed, doesn't mean you need to hate it. I'd argue the vast majority of movies are good. Truly bad movies are a rarity. Does that mean every movie is amazing? No, not by a long shot. But you can still criticize a movie and point out its shortcomings while acknowledging that on the whole it's still decent and enjoyable. Unfortunately, that's something very few people are willing to do, and it seems people just let the negatives carry the whole impression of the film, and suck any enjoyment out of it. To be fair, this isn't just a problem with critics. But I do think it's a bit more common for critics, since they generally study film and it's easier for them to feel that they are better informed than the masses as to true quality.

I agree with a number of this Critic's comments and some of the other comments here, but a number of them, I DEFINITELY disagree with! I thought the 2021 Steven Spielberg Directed Movie version was a BRILLIANT Cinematic MASTERPIECE and in EVERY way!! I thought Ansel Elgort as Tony, was absolutely PHENOMENAL in the Role and was and IS a TRUE Triple threat, (Singing, Dancing AND Acting)! I personally found the Romance between Tony, (Ansel Elgort) and Maria, (Rachel Zegler), sweet, compelling, touching and totally believable and I really thought they had TERRIFIC Chemistry, not to mention their Voices were GORGEOUS and blended PERFECTLY together! I also did NOT see Ansel as looking ridiculously (too) old for Rachel, to be realistic, or believable, either! He has a baby face and I found them comparable, looking several years apart in age, but not 7-10 years or more apart, like some people are claiming! Come on! He looks YOUNG and pulls off this Role BEAUTIFULLY! Rachel is just SUPER young and LOOKS it, so pretty much ANYBODY they partnered her with, WOULD look older, no matter what!

One other quick comment. Full disclosure: I LOVE Donald Trump. The guy has BALLZ! We need a guy like that in the USA. America First! BUT, having said that - the way Sean Baker layered Trump's campaign speeches with the desperate situation the main characters were hopelessly ensnared, was an epic statement on how Capitalism is a failed system in America and how many of our citizens are doomed. Hi Jon. Excellent review. I watched the film this weekend (Netflix DVD). I was pleasantly surprised. For starters, I'm a big Sean Baker fan. The Florida Project just blew me away. I still think of it on almost a daily basis. I fell head over heals for Bria Vinaite. Anyhow, this film had similar overtones. A character driven, slice of current life, in a brief moment of time. Damn! Simon Rex surprised me. He carried this movie on his "manhood" all the way through. Very entertaining!

JK Rowlings transphobic activism? WTF are you talking about? She's made a handful of comments on social media, and then only in response to particular news items. That's definitely not activism. And it's not transphobic either. There's a middle way, where you approve of some changes that will make life better for trans people, but don't necessarily agree that they should have everything they are demanding. It's the way I think about the subject, actually.

I thought the thesis of the movie was that everyone is stronger and better off when working together. Spoilers In the beginning of the movie, Claire tells Maise this when Maise wants to leave the mountain and go off on her own. Then for the rest of the movie, whenever the heroes do anything and succeed, it's only because they get some kind of help or assistance from someone else. Every time the villain fails, it's because he insists on doing things his way and on his own. Even at the end of the movie, the T-rex has to team up with the long finger dino to defeat the giga, wrapping up the movie while still arguing its thesis.
