Great video, thoroughly enjoyed it! It's good to see this kinds of videos. Seems like small channels are the ones making good anitube content these days. It shouldn't be that way, but it feels so refreshing hearing people talking reasonably about something they enjoy (without the necessity of bashing other things or being inflammatory in general) Also, always appreciate Hyouka getting the much deserved love it often doesn't seem to get. Guess that's a consequence of it being relatively unknown all things considered Anyway, +1 sub! Continue the great work!

Oh btw if your interested their is a currently airing anime that also is a Slice of Life Mystery series by the same author called Shoushomin How to Become Ordinary, its less atmospheric and Meloncholic, and more tightly paced and Grittier (Well compared to Hyouka its still basically a highschool Slice of Life Mystery that focuses on character drama.)
@dpolaristar46345 ай бұрын
I finally watched it and here are my thoughts. First a correction, the source material are just regular Novels not Light Novels. As for the video itself. I think you only talked about one side of the talent conversation Satoshi's side, but there is just as much discussion on the people that have the talent and the pressure they feel, and the obligation to use it to meet the expectations of others. The show makes an argument that if you do have talent or ability your obligated to utilize it or you spit on the face of others. Satoshi's arc also was hinted at before the cultural festival since the first arc, on the way to Chitanda's House Oreki sees him as Shocking Pink, showing that Satoshi's enjoyment of life is an overcompensation and somewhat insincere as opposed to Oreki's ideal of how Chitanda and his Sister Tomoe lives their life. Oreki blaming his skills on Luck, I think is less him being unable to handle compliments but more his subconscious fear and realization that if he is "special" the obligations that come with it, and finding out whether he is special or not, or simply a fraud trying to be special can live him feeling burned (Like what happened with Irisu where he felt like a Fool when he thought he was so smart.) I also think you overplay how the mysteries themselves don't matter, when people say the mysteries don't matter, they are talking about the stakes and the thrills, most people see mysterious as jangling keys in front of people and more like supsense. The mysteries in Hyouka are more like the classic golden age Whodunnits, where the clues are laid out for the audience where they have a chance to play along and solve it before the detective gives their grand deduction. I think a lot of the appeal of Hyouka, the in joy of the act of solving said mysteries regardless of how "important" they are, which re enforces the theme of the Rose Colored Life, how Eru cares about things that are unimportant and in defiance of Oreki's Motto. Finally I think you are missing a bit of nuance with Chitanda feeling boxed in by her life, yes she does feel restrained by it, but she also takes pride and security and sees it as an anchor to stand on, and is content with her future. So she both feels constrained by her life but she also desires and sees it as part of her identity. For the record, I think the Novels are just as good as the anime, its a bit reductive saying the Novels don't have the methods of visual storytelling when literature has its own techniques, for example in the Cultural Festival Arc, the reveal of how Jumoniji is had more buildup as in the Novels we don't see who Oreki is talking to until he gives his name at the end of his Deduction. As someone that is a fan of Kyoani's work, let me say that most of their Anime is a huge improvement on Source Material that honestly was kinda mid or even terrible until Kyoani gave them a facelift, most of their newer work after they split from Kadokawa to be their own production committee is self published works from contest that are honestly thinly disguised first draft contests where the source material is more a concept that is "fixed" by the anime adaptation. Hyouka is NOT one of these works, the Novels are amazingly written and deserve a shot. Plus the next two Novels which the anime didn't cover (Because they weren't written yet) Further develop the characters and plotlines, like for example in the beginning of Novel 5, the next one after the anime ends, it confirms that Satoshi and Mayaka are dating (They technically started at the Doll Festival after their presumed talk.) That's a minor spoiler literally in the beginning but their are bigger ones that need to be read, including why Mayaka doesn't like Oreki, a continuation of her struggles as a Manga artist started in the Festival, Satoshi discovering his competence, Oreki revealing why he took on his motto and became grey (Although its foreshadowed in the anime in the Film Arc.), Chitanda and Oreki generally getting closer, recruiting a new member on their second year, and the biggest one Chitanda having an existential crisis about her future.
@inyakee5 ай бұрын
Thanks for commenting. My bad; I've always had in my mind that the source material was a LN and should have checked this. I agree with what you say about Oreki's response to praise-though I think both can be true at the same time. I'm not really qualified to talk about the quality of mysteries as I haven't read many. I didn't mention it in the criticisms section but I saw a few reviews mention that the mysteries are very mundane compared to other mysteries (with the subtext that this is kind of a bad thing). I agree with you that there is a lot of joy in trying to work out the mysteries for the first time as this is the reason the mystery genre is still popular; however, my main point was that even if these characters weren't solving mysteries and, say, were playing chess, the show would be largely as good. The mysteries feel more like something the characters do rather than who they are. However, I also agree with you in that mysteries in this case are quite a useful vehicle because they can be very unimportant. I also agree with what you say about how I missed a part of Chitanta's character. I wish I added a part saying that in spite of her restrained family situation, her character shows that there can still be a lot of meaning within that. I was quite reductive with my comment about visual media. This is mainly just a personal taste of mine and a symptom/cause of me not reading many books lol. I might just be lazy. But, after what you've said about the novel (and realising that it's not a light novel) I might need to give it a try. In response to your other comment: I have surprisingly (considering the anime rock I live under) come accross the Shoushomin anime and considered watching it. If you recommend it, I might give it a watch. My recommendation to you (if you weren't already aware) are the two new Naoko Yamada movies coming out in a few days. I'm very excited for these! Thank you again for taking the time out of your day to watch and comment. I hope to see you in the comments section in the future ☺
@olivegarden36044 ай бұрын
@@inyakee Just wanted to make a little comment about those criticisms. Remember ep 7, I think it was (maybe it's 8), when the classics club is interrogating the staff making the film, right? Oreki and Satoshi discuss something important about the perception mystery usually gets in the public eye: it's often jumbled up with thriller! I don't mean to dismiss people's tastes (if they dislike Hyouka, that's that, I don't mind, just pointing something out), but when they realise something's supposed to be a mystery, if they don't think of Sherlock's Doyle and Agatha's Poirot, they probably relate it more to (what I assume is) Stephen King (I never read anything of his, but as far as I know it's more thriller and suspense, horror even maybe, but not mystery). This preconception of what mystery is probably leads to disappointment I guess slice of life is relatively niche all things considered too (maybe niche isn't the right word - I just mean to say it's not mainstream), so that doesn't help either

Glad you brought up EmpLemom's video because it was that which made me realize Christmas Who was my favorite episode. It explodes the duo's dynamic perfectly where even when SpongeBob is at his lowest and feels like he has failed literally everyone and Squidward laughs at his face, he *still* does his best to make Squidward happy with his gift and Squidward finally gets it, and Squidward is the one to save Christmas. Like an element of Band Geeks no one brings up is how SpongeBob, the person Squidward wants to avoid the most, is the one to bring Bikini Bottom together to bring Squidward's dream to reality, but Christmas Who sets it up better with its extra time to show SpongeBob doesn't want Squidward left out so Bob making the gift feels like a result of something, so the gift being the catalyst of Squid's change feels perfectly earned.

@Abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz10249 ай бұрын
Not really (looking at the essence of each episode) Everyone helped Squidward in Band Geeks while on Christmas who? Squidward as an Individual ruined his life by giving away everything he owned to make a bunch of nobodies, and SpongeBob a little bit happier 1,000 can give way more than 1 can and it won't be anywhere near as damaging for them Unless Santa gives Squidward replacements for doing his job for him, which being an episodic cartoon you can't reliably count on that Only optimally are the episodes equal, realistically(the accurate one of the 3) Band Geeks is better, pessimistically(which is more reasonable than optimistic in the real world, no natural good is comparable to most natural evils, such as losing a finger or going blind, those are both worse than anything natural is good, and the best goods can easily be taken away and made worse than they ever were good, while the worst bads can never be undone flat out) Band Geeks is better So 2-2.9+/3 Band Geeks is better and 1-0.1-/3 Band Geeks is on the same level To give a direct example: children such as SpongeBob tend to be optimistic out of ignorance In reality things aren't good and unless your life is without severe problems the amount of good never triumphs over the bad Just because most people are able to convince themselves it doesn't make it so, most people were wrong about racism 200 years ago for example, most people are often wrong, which makes it's even worse because that means the correct minority(not race I mean people as a whole, although they can both be the case too in some situations) have to suffer for it, which is exponentially worse as it's bad and wrong people who should suffer compared to good and correct people Preferably everyone would be good and correct though especially since bad and stupid people rarely are the ones to suffer for their own stupidity Most people for example are wrong about nationalism, and politics to this day, (it's blatantly obvious that each side is full of correct and incorrect ideological information, and for countries which are less right and left wing still have nearly all corrupt leaders with incorrect ideologies) and those are just the obvious on) Edit: hypothetically one day in the far future there could be more good than bad but that day is yet to come, there is the limitation of lightspeed and thermodynamics which have to be taken care of too to fully realize that hopeful eventuality And humans have civilization and modern technology to offset a lot of the ancient horrible natural occurrences, and even that is full of its own flaws despite that

Shipping culture is really annoying, I completely agree with you. Though, MLAATR has suffered another pretty terrible internet fate. Overall, I would try to ignore most communities. It is kinda hard, but very worthwhile if the show has other things going for it.
