My 5th GGM Mary Elizabeth Burnett b. 1727 on Barbados, "sole heiress of Robert married my GGF Benjamin Jones m. Aug 8 1746. My cousin gave me the record on FamilySearch. Lord of Leys was gracious enough to have their genealogist state she is not in their tree. This goes betond one record. Going on nine yrs of research confirming the entire family of Jones back to 1050 AD. Every single father-in-law was a Baron or Earl leading to the Stanley and many others including Chief of the 15 Royal Tribes of Wales. Her son, well known Robert-Burnett Jones, Gov of Barbados would of known her well. Herald Burke stated she was descendant of Gilbert Burnet (1643-1715) DD Bishop of Salisbury. Burke did have Mary's husbands name wrong. Further research shows Marry's father to be Capt Robert Burnett and Mother; Mary Lane, dau. of Anthony. Children were given surnames as middle names of their ancestor. This has led me to publish 1st of four volumes; Barbadoes Jones Decoded, as the amount of gr gp's titles, stations in life, and history is imense. Being a G. Designer, I even opened a Scottish apparel and mug store, but if curious on the store, you could message me, as I do not want to distract from your endevours.

Hello again, I hope that all of you are doing well. Do you know what year Dhugall Dall of Clan Chattan passed away and do you know if there were any interactions between Dhugall Dall and Angus Mackintosh?

Hi there! We are well, thanks, hope you are, too. We've had a look at one of our clan books and Angus Mackintosh married Eva, the daughter of Dhugall Dall (some people think she was his granddaughter) - so perhaps they interacted as in-laws? Can't seem to find any dates regarding the year of his passing. Have you tried contacting Clan Chattan Association for more information? Their website is clanchattan.org.uk/ We hope that helps?

Crazy how small the world is. Here from Los Angeles, California. As my hometown (Lennox, CA) was part of the former Rancho Sausal Redondo. Here's the info from the wiki "The Rancho was sold to Sir Robert Burnett (11th. Baronet, 1876-1894) who used the land for sheep and cattle raising. Having previously acquired Rancho Aguaje de la Centinela, Burnett combined the total area into the Centinela Ranch, thus reuniting the major area of the original land grant. Clear title to the land did not occur until 1873, when a U.S. District Court upheld Burnett's purchase against a suit filed by Ávila heir Tomas Avila Sanchez. In 1873, Robert Burnett leased the land to Daniel Freeman and returned to his native Scotland."

15:30 I wouldn't say that English doesn't make sense here. It's just that _schrive_ (or how do you spell it in Scots) descended from Proto-Germanic _*skrīban_ ‘to write’ from Latin _scrībō_ ‘to write’ from Proto-Italic _*skreiβō_ ‘to carve’. And English uses a descendant from Proto-Germanic _*wrītaną_ ‘to carve’. Both are valid and logical. And by the way, since writing is a relatively new invention, many Indo-European languages use unrelated words for it.

@ Good morning Henry Davidson. When did he inherit the Castle. I found a picture of Elizabeth, her mom and the family. But why was Henry faded out of the picture? Is there any other pictures of Elizabeth together with her mom or separate pictures . In three years, I’ll be 70 years old, even though I don’t look at, but I’m trying to save up enough money to come to Scotland. Hopefully you guys are still around by then, and I can stop in at your store and visit. Joe Davidson

Hi Joe, thanks for clarifying. We have a blog which features a bit about Tulloch here: www.scotlandshop.com/tartanblog/castles-clan-davidson It appears Henry acquired the Castle on 13th January 1762. Not sure why Henry was faded out of the picture, our guess would be because he possibly had an affair. Perhaps it is worth contacting Clan Davidson society for further information as there's the Clan Davidson room at Tulloch and they have a website here: clandavidson.org.uk/the-clan-davidson-room/ We hope that helps? Please do come and visit us when you come over to Scotland - we're sure we'll still be around then. We would love to see you!

Eight years of research on writing a four book volume on The Jones of Barbados and Wales, verified my 5th GGM is a Burnett. Family from Barbados incorporated the Burnett Coat of Arms into their monument in ENG, however, both Scottish and English Heralds say it is not legit. I say my 4th Gr uncle Robert Burnet Jones would know who his mother was, and they used maternal surnames as middle names in that period. Father Robert. Believe I just found parish record of her GGF John. The hunt continues... Plus I even created merch as Scottish Viking on spreadshirt. My other 7 branches were Icelandic farmers and vikings.

To revise/replace "Fact 1" with a possible alternative. King Wiiliam the Lion of Scotland invaded the North of England 1173/74. The Anglo Norman chronicler, Jordan Fantosme of Winchester recorded (in old French) some of this invasion and gave an account of the Scots (Flemish and Border-men) siege of Brough Castle and how it was defended by six knights (chevaliers) against the Scots. He records that a further knight from a short distance just north of the Cumbrian castle joined the defence just as the other six knights surrendered from its burning wooden keep. This new knight continued the fight from the parapet of the burning keep by throwing the keep's javelins great distances down onto the Scots below, resorting to the stakes protecting the parapet when the javelins had all gone. In the process he repeatedly shouted in Old French the questionable translation sof which were " I am not vanquished." or "You will be vanquished" The History and Antiquities of Cumberland records that (prior to that invasion) a certain Sir William of Ousby (just up the Eden Valley from Brough) owned around half of Ousby hamlet with the second half split among others. After the war, a Sir William Armstrong emerged as the half owner of Ousby. Coincidence, I think not. Others say that the first mention of the Armstrong name was in Cumberland in the 12th century. Three coincidences: the possibility that William d'Ousby and William Armstrong are one and the same; he display of strength in the arm; and the shouting of the words I or you and vanquished which has similarity to the latin Invictus Maneo. That would make the Armstrongs initially of Norman descent. Both documents exist and are available from the internet. Maybe the Fairbairn story has more credibility - we'll never really know.
