Thanks so much, folks.Lovely practical teaching. This way of thinking 'What if this person was my mother?' is meaningful.Ive seen it so often in 'ordinary' people doing care roles as jobs who have this as their concious baseline when dealing with the vulnerable elderly .Many carers do come to really love their clients. It's certainly NOT an impossible ask by any means and carer or not, this view is so practically beneficial and meaningful.

Loved this: "Every dharma discussion should lead you to a more positive place...when you exit the discussion, you're more peaceful than when you entered."

such a great discussion, thank you. Could I suggest you explore Pinning both your screens so you discuss next to each other rather than flicking between each of your speaker screens, if may feel simpler for the viewer.

everybody needs a purpose, when you have an inner purpose, you have something to look forward to and it creates happiness. For instance, with knitting creating something with your hands, you use your mind and work with beautiful fibers that is so satisfying, then finishing a project is a sense of accomplishment.. then if you gift it to somebody, there's a whole reward there and giving to people who are in need of it and who love it. I instantly get in a good mood by using my creativity.

this is such a great video, I think human nature is to keep striving to do better than what you have especially when it's the only way you know, in terms of raising a family and children. I've come to realize that true happiness is free. It's taking a walk in nature and spending time with my dog that gives me unconditional love and having a partner that supports me. The meditation that you're speaking of is intriguing to me and I'm curious about it.

What I find most curious is why we never 'debate' or discuss our Dharma understanding in relation to other Non-Dharma views. Of course we need to a profound and correct view of the actual objects of Dharma both intellectual as well as the 'actual' internal realisations BUT how can we skillfully ever lead people to a Dharma view if we have no clue about the myriad of worldly other views out there ? Sure I understand that ultimately we really just ned to get ourselves to a place of safety first!! but I still wonder... :)

What I was saying is that I found paired dicussion in general programme (beginners classes) to be crucial. I learned so much about peoples experiences applying the Dharma (Buddhas teachings ) in their different life situations. It helped me learn to show interest in the other people in the room rather than feeling isolated & unable to express myself. I think the paired discussion meant you could discuss any confusion or disagreement with the teachings more privately & discretely instead of having to do it in front of the entire group to the teacher which is very inimidating (having to ask the teacher questions in front of the whole class). I think without the paired discussion people go home with unresolved issues & misunderstandings about the teachings. This makes them much less likely to come back. Also they didnt get to make the kind of friendship you develop in a paired discussion. Also people nowadays are so isolated. I found turning to the raondom person next to me and learning about someones life both fascinating and incredibly comforting & inspriing. To hear their story of their spritual life. A lot of the time the teacher would earwig the discussions and feel they were off topic but these discussion were a crucial part of begiining the sangha community. Having meaningful friendship developing. I feel the way we just look at the back fo heads and are passive, not singing together or discussing together has really changed GP(general programme classes) into something just like being spoon fed, completely passive, you can just drift off to the CD music and not come back until the tea is brought out. Especially if you are tired after a day at work. I think paired discussion was brilliant for GP.

We need a special wisdom that understands the method for dispelling wrong or mistaken views through skilful spiritual debate and discussion. Skilful discussion helps, but unskilful debate causes things to get worse and may cause others to get angry because our view is opposite to theirs. They believe something, we believe the opposite, and so we discuss and it doesnít work. So skilful discussion works, it helps. If we discuss using skilful methods, it is very beneficial. Spiritual debate is very beneficial. In this way through discussion or debate we can lead many people to the correct spiritual path and eliminate their misunderstandings, wrong conceptions, and wrong views, just as Dharmakirti was able to lead many people to correct views by engaging in actions such as spiritual debate. - GKG SuF 1998

I cant find anything in the archives where Geshe la has said about the 50% so it may have been in a private meeting ? Its not something ive heard personally but through researching this point you can see that Geshe la mentions 'discussion' quite regularly :)
