Hi Andrew, I have just acquired a melody boy 1000 and it's in very nice condition other than the back light . Does the switch suppose to stay either on or off ? Mine is on permanently i.e the switch fails to stay down . Is this a faulty switch ? Also missing a slider knob. Cheers Neil
@Andrewausfa2 ай бұрын
Hi Neil. the light is on full time on mains. The light switch should be momentary, just for battery only use. Cheers - Andrew PS Slider knobs...bad design, they're usually missing one or both!

Hi Fred, they are a complicated set for the novice :) All I can suggest is clean those rotary turret contacts. Without the correct gear you're going to get nowhere I'm afraid. Not that there's much on MW now.

I’ve got one of these from new unfortunately it only works on FM which is disappointing as I love listening to this in my railway den , I have cleaned all the contacts. As I’ve no radio electronics knowledge, a fellow KZbin radio guy Graham gave me a few tips . But my knowledge is limited . I enjoyed this vid thanks . Ps not a great many stations on am though

Hi I'm in North Wales, if I made one of these should it cover most of the UK? I can only pick up Wirral London control and Liverpool airports right now using a standard RTL SDR antenna that came with the dongle. I do have another antenna a Eightwood 4G LTE Antenna but still just Liverpool and London control. Thanks
@Andrewausfa4 ай бұрын
Hi, not sure if this would work with SDR efficiently across all bands as it's air band specific. It should be OK for normal 'Air' but not for scanning MW through UHF. Does that make sense? I do have an SDR dongle but found it absolutely rubbish so I stick with my 3500XLT. I'm in Cambridgeshire and can pick up Manchester control no issues.

That was a bit of an "ouch!" at the beginning of the first part of this pair of videos! So good you managed to get it all back together, though, Andrew. Periodically, I go through sessions in my life of tracking down the makes and models of past electrical goods that have been in the family and at last it appears that I have, at long last, identified the radio that Nan - my maternal grandmother - had. It was quite an attractive design on Philips' part and certainly distinctive. Thanks for the insights into repairing parts of the circuitry, whereby I think I really learned something should I ever decide to delve deeper into effecting such tasks. Perhaps you should have pointed out that, as they say, other brands of porridge oats are available, unless you're sponsored by Quaker! On that subject I do like the branding of your channel, as that is the make of a vintage valve radio I have, that works in a partial - hardly any LW and MW and not much more SW, but plenty of VHF/FM - and on and off sort of way - periodic 'buzziness' - and, indeed, I recently featured the VHF3D 'Stereophonic' in action as part of celebrating a decade of KZbin membership. I hope you enjoy it should you drop by my channel!

what silicon transistors did you use to replacing the germanium ones?
@johnb67239 ай бұрын
It’s a pity so few germanium transistors are made these days. Is it due to the Earth’s supply of germanium being almost used up?

MIne gives sound only via headphone output. If i connect it to line in of another amp i get sound: headphone out mustang -> another amp line in. I dont get any sound if i try to play with mustangs speaker. If i max the volume i get a veeery silent sound.
@Andrewausfa8 ай бұрын
So the pre-amps working but nothing out of the main amplifier? Have you checked the speaker leads are connected to the speaker? Sounds obvious but can be as simple as that. Other than that it's either between the input to your amplifier chip from the pre-amp or from the chips 'out' leg to the speakers. Could be a fried chip, it does happen.
@ErebosArt8 ай бұрын
@@Andrewausfa yeah i opened it and checked but everything seems ok. I had a talk with a friend who had the same situation and found that in his mustang it was a chip in power amplifier. he will fix mine too so thx for response :)

I´ve a nice Hitachi radio it´s a Wh-859D with Germanium transistors that is failing, sometimes there is no sound at all. It was constructed using these transistors numbers: 2A A 131 (Freq. Mixer) , 2AS A130 (Local Oscillator), 2S A12 (.F. Amp.) , 2 S B75 (A.F. Amp.) , 2 S B77 (A.F. Amp) , and 2S B156 (Power Amp.). I´d love to change them to Silicon transistors. Which easy to find and equivallent transistors would you suggest me to find here in North America?, Thanks in advance from México.

It’s the only amp this ever happened to me before. It won’t work at all now. It’s so cheap I shouldn’t care but it’s made me mad because I bought it for my students to use. It sounded really good (surprisingly) but it lasted a short time and now nothing.

I, too, have the model 470A in my collection. Even though it is a 'short' Superhet, it gives a very good account of its self. There seems to have been two A.C. models of the 470A.... The "home-market" version, using the "Golden range" valves, "FC4", "VP4B", "PEN4DD", "1821", like yours and mine; and an "export-market" model that used the "red E" type valves on side-contact bases, "EK2", "EF9", "EBL1", "AZ1". It also had more continental stations marked on the dial without the BBC "National" & "Regional" stations. I have heard that there was a "Universal Mains" version made, model 470U, which also had a "C1" Barretter ballast resistance for the heaters. But I don't know the valve line-up on the 470U.

Just found this page.I own the exact same model,and it performs far better than my DR/RF31 receiver. I will point out that the Band changer/slide function on the circuit board will fail at some stage.I owned the DR/RF 49,big black radio with metal case.This radio performed for 10 years after I bought it second hand.One of the very best National Panasonic radios I had ever owned untill one time it became non operational completely on HF bands because the band slider jamed up.I managed to unattach it off the circuit board,because it is an integral part of the board,and found the very tiny fingers that slide back and forth had all curled up and twisted becomeing completely non operational.I could not find another circuit board that had not had the same problem.I notice the same band selector system is used in my DR/RF 28,yet so far it has not caused any problems.So for owners of these fine radios,please be aware of this.

Dude can you help me with my 2nd hand Mustang 3 v2??? It works but there is a horrible background buzz that almost drowns out the sound of my guitar. Turning the amp up just makes it worse. The courier who dropped it off slammed it down on the floor when he got it out of the van #idiot! Don't know if that could have done anything to cause this. How do I go about diagnosing it?? 🙏
@Andrewausfa10 ай бұрын
Hi, sounds very much like there's some internal damage. It may be visible with your eyes but get a magnifying glass and check the tracks. Good luck!!
@banksy44410 ай бұрын
@Andrewausfa dude thankyou for your reply! :) luckily I think it's OK and it was my guitar cable that was causing the noise think the insulation was shot, it's LOADS quieter with a new cable only an audible fuzz on high gain presets. So happy with it these amps are fantastic! Managed to get the FUSE software and nearly 10,000 presets downloaded from an old forum post. If anything ever goes wrong with it I will be straight back to this video! ❤️

Had exactly the same faults. I replaced all rectifier diodes with 1N5062 (5 were broken but I took out all) and also replaced the smoking x cap 0.022uF with a 0.1 uF. ( I had this in stock) then evetrything worked flawlessly. Red LED on the PSU boards need to light all. Seems to be standard faults.

Unfortunately this one's headed for parts. One of the TO3 Hybrid IC packages has gone and a replacement costs more (even just the shipping costs more) than I paid for the unit. Just not financially feasible.
@kd6tas11 ай бұрын
The simple answer is no. Germanium transistors can be replaced with silicon and re-biased. If you're trying to make a living doing low-cost repairs in volume, it's not practical.

In fact, Selena is a complete analogue of the Ocean-209 or 214 radio receiver, which was produced for the domestic market of the USSR. It’s just that Selena was produced specifically for export to Western European countries, and, accordingly, had higher frequencies of the HF subbands, and the European FM range 88...108 MHz (in the USSR there was a different FM range - 65.8...74 MHz). The ancestor of this internal design, of course, is the progenitor - the VEF-202 model from the 60s.
