Repair and renovation of a Pye 1354 Transistor Radio, lovingly assembled in Cambridge UK in the early 1960s and sixty years later lovingly disassembled a few miles from its birthplace.

Hi Rob, yes Newmarket Transistors was set up as a wholly owned company by Pye in 1953 and was originally called The Transistor Development Company.

Nice restoration Andrew. Seems like Simon is very pursuasive, lol. My little Panasonic R-1018 is awaiting a NOS AC126 but I have replaced the 3 caps, repaired a lifted pad and damaged track at the ferrite antenna and tweaked the r.f. alignment.

Thanks Mike. NKTs aren't the easiest or cheapest to get hold of but some types are still available. Definitely a limited supply though.

That's going to need a lot of love to make it shine again, but shine it will :-D What a shame about the damage to the tuning window, shame it can't be cut out and a nice bit of clear plastic with a hole cemented in. ( Not cement a hole in ha ha :-D ) I had an image of a blank c.d, the clear one you get with a spindle of disks. Maybe thick perspex. My brain does kick up some rubbish lol. My brother was a radio ham and i remember him making a mini basestation from a pye pocket phone in a box with psu and front panel controls, something to do with 77's i think. Pye cambridge comes to mind, i fixed one for a ham. Don't forget to put the dead caps in a box and send them to simon as a xmas present lol.

Amasing how these old transistor radios have managed to survive all this time. Out of interest, with respect to PCB's, I came across a video, earlier this year, where an old timer radio chap stated that, " If the PCB has no component positions marked out on the board then it's a Printed Wiring Board (PWB), as all early boards were, hence only classed as a Printed Circuit Board (PCB) if it does have component positions marked on the board". Have you heard of this before, Andrew....the older use of the term PWB ?.

@@Andrewausfa The earlier manufactured boards did not have the component positioned marked on the boards so the assembler had to use a board population diagram to show them where the components had to go. So these earlier boards only had the track laid out on one side with the component positions holes drilled through to the other side, the side where the components were to be mounted.
