I tell my patients to discontinue the topical after a few weeks on oral, as the topical is no longer necessary. For those who prefer to use both, most will use the topical once at night. It is not necessary to use both at the same time.

I heard that minoxidil stops working after certain period of use. It could be because a body becomes immune to minoxidil, it adapts to it and starts to produce more dht which then binds to follicles, causing hair shrinkage. Minoxidil is short rather than long term solution, so if you want to keep hair, you need to take different treatment like fin or get transplant.
@BobDerm7 ай бұрын
Minoxidil does not affect the DHT pathway, but rather has an effect on potassium channels. There are very few medicines that truly "stop working" for hair loss. Rather, as multiple pathways can cause hair loss, other pathways may become dominant. Certainly combining minoxidil with other medicines like finasteride will provide superior results.

There is a load of misinformation on here and quite frankly, I can’t understand how this hasn’t been pulled! Minoxidil does not prevent hair loss. It does not block DHT. It just Dilate the blood vessels to the hair follicles to supply more blood giving the added thickness. If you are suffering from male pattern baldness minoxidil will do nothing for you, you’ll still lose your hair, and you are still going to be bald!

Minoxidil is one of only two medicine that have FDA approval for the treatment of hair loss. It most certainly works, but a patient must understand the expectations. Minoxidil can reduce hair shedding, accelerate hair growth speed, and convert fine hairs to thicker hairs. All of these effects are helpful. And like all medicines, it will not give benefits to everyone.

The point of minoxidil is for regrowth though, it won't prevent baldness, what prevents baldness are 5ar inhibitors like finasteride and dutasteride which actually blocks the conversion of DHT which is what causes hair loss. If you're trying to stop hairloss and maintain what you have, you need to hop on finasteride, use the minoxidil for regrowth. Both take 6 months to a year to see results, maybe even longer.
@spzenza707 Жыл бұрын
That is correct, although you see hair growing by using minoxidil only, eventually you will lose it because the DHT will catch up and the hair growth cant keep up. That's where finastride comes in to decrease DHT and fight hair loss

These two things are completely different treatments. They can't replace each other in any way. Finasteride halts hair loss by blocking DHT. Minoxidil promotes hair growth. There is an approximately 5% risk of a non-melanoma skin cancer developing within the treated area after 30 years. Such a cancer could be treated with Mohs surgery.
