The strange thing is that my knee injury wasn’t directly caused by the boardwalk. We were descending using the boardwalk when some people were ascending. Gabi and I stepped off the boards to let them pass and Gabi said that she wanted to catch her breath. We stood there for a couple of minutes when, suddenly, then ground crumbled under mr foot. I lurched forward and somersaulted down the hill with my head by my knees. As I fell, I heard a ripping sound and remember thinking, ‘God! I’ve ripped my new hiking trousers’. I hadn’t. The ripping sound was my tendon. I wasn’t in pain at that stage, apart from the small bump on my head, and didn’t realise that I was injured until I discovered that I could bend my right leg but not straighten it.

When you came through the stile past the ruin , you were wise with the hip and knee to turn back. Had you gone on, you would walk a short distance along the road to the church on the hill, up that road a good bit and turn right onto the new track along the hillside ..its well signed and there's a car park space beside it. The track follows along through woodland and open territory above the road til it descends to the road almost opposite the turn in to where you parked your car for this walk. That section would be a separate long enough walk for you to do sometime given your hip and knee situations.. but it is also lovely.

Great video as always guys thank you both very much for your hard work. I just want to make one small correction to your commentary on the gauge of the railway. The Irish Standard gauge is five foot three inches, it was always wider than the British Standard Gauge and was arrived at by finding the average of a few different gauges of the first few railways built in Ireland - most of them around Dublin.
@OldHikingGeezer-lp7bu7 күн бұрын
I can see what you are getting at but the four feet eight and a half inch gauge is known as standard gauge throughout most of the world. The only other country that has the Irish gauge is Australia and that is because the original designer in Australia was an Irishman.

In 2011 the Cornish Pasty was awarded Protected Geographical Indication by the EU, which meant only pasties made in Cornwall could be advertised as such. I know this because I used to love them and was very sad to learn they were no longer available here in Ireland. (Must learn to make them.) Not sure if that rule still applies post-Brexit but the supermarkets will still be reluctant to take the risk.

Thank you for those lovely comments. The Irish winters are quite mild but wet. If you move over try to get a property that doesn’t suffer from damp. In many older properties, ours for instance, it is a battle to keep it under control but it is a small price to pay to live in such a wonderful place.

It seems to me that many more people would have left Britain due to Brexit but either had too many ties (elderly parents, etc) or lacked the finances to fund a move. We were lucky that my inheritance allowed us to get here. I was limited in my choice of country to move to. It was either Germany, as I’m married to a German, or Ireland because in a UK citizen. I know that I chose the right one. This is home now and where my heart is. Thank you for taking the time to comment.

Very informative. I'm an Irish citizen (although I've never lived there!) and considering a move to Ireland. I think if I was you and liked Wales, I would have considered staying there. I have considered Wales many times. I think the big lure for me about Ireland is property price and what you get for your money. I do worry about healthcare though, it's cost and availability. Can you nip over the border for healthcare, medicines etc..? My family were from Belfast, but the fear of renewed troubles brought on by Brexit has frightened me off from living there.

I don’t think I can use NI health care as I no longer have a UK address. Staying in Wales would have been nice but we got out because Gabi is German and we were worried about any future Tory government (this was before the election) starting to revoke settled status.

@@OldHikingGeezer-lp7bu - if you present yourself at your GP with a medical situation, and request to be “put onto the Crossborder List” You can in fact be seen by doctors/surgeons in the north.
