Hi Jo I'm 57 and have been teaching for 40 years (it's a long story 😂😂) What I would say to my younger self is not to take things personally. Meaning that you're allowed to make mistakes even as a teacher. Don't let that affect you mentally. Keep on learning as it's a lifelong journey. Use humour as a way of connecting, it works wonders. Cheers Effie

@@effiesavvaidis2797 That’s great advice for life, not only teaching! How did you start teaching when you were 14??!!!
@effiesavvaidis27975 күн бұрын
@elttraining not 14 but 17 but either way, way too soon. We left Australia went to Greece and because I spoke English with an 'accent' I was asked to do a bit of speaking with one or two classes. Those one/two classes became much much more and lots of studying and 'stress' later I have been teaching English and wouldn't change it for anything.

Thanks, Jo! I mostly agree-technology can be a big distraction if not used right. Students need to master it to really benefit. E-tools are great when used with a familiar group, but let's be real-time is the most valuable resource in the classroom - much too valuable to waste.

I totally agree with you. I prepare students for Cambridge exams. I love the Cambridge tech tools and try to use them as much as possible. So to save classroom time, I create some short video tutorials for my students to watch at home and learn how to log in, create a profile, navigate the tool, etc. I assign technology use for homework mainly (if it's something to be used individually). The technology tools that I can use myself in class I save for revision time and fun games. Thank you. You always present great content.

Thank you Jo. Finally a voice of reason on the matter. Can’t tell you how much time is wasted in the classroom because we’re MEANT to incorporate new technology to show we’re EVOLVING as teachers. Integrating technology into the classroom is fine. The main issue is that it's not actually integrated. "We've bought some iPads" is often the extent of the thought that's gone into it from the schools. It also depends what you mean by technology. A cassette deck is technology. A book it technology if you really want to drill down into it. An important aspect is learner training, which is why it's always handy to find out what technology your students already know how to use. I had my students make a poster on Canva, because they already knew how to use it. If they hadn't, I would have never spent the time to teach them. Plenty of courses have made use of social media that students are already on, because it removes the need for training. But it can be tricky, because it's hard to find something that everyone is genuinely on, and then it's tricky to require people to sign up for some third party app. It's also worth mentioning that using technology in a foreign language is an important skill in itself. Researching stuff online, writing emails, using messaging apps, etc are all things that students will have to be able to do, and it's a bit weird to ask students to hand write an email if you can do it with technology, because the way you write on a computer is different to the way you write on paper. For a start, you make different mistakes. You also plan differently because it's easier to edit on a computer. Having said all that, I definitely agree with you on time. It can be such a time sink, not just for the students, but for the teacher planning. Have you seen how long it takes to set up a Kahoot quiz for a 5-10 minute activity? Our school are currently having the bright idea of introducing online discussion boards onto their LMS. But of course we can't allow the students to post just anything for child protection reasons, so their posts would need to be approved by a moderator first. And guess who they wanted to do that? That's right, the teachers. So how is that going to work in terms of our admin time? "Oh, we haven't figured that out yet." Having said all that, any new and relatively complex activity can be a pain to set up the first time you do it. Ones involving technology are no different. And equally, there are plenty of apps out there that are so intuitive that they require no training.

Generally I tend to agree, it's good to use classroom time for human interaction, and keep things simple. That said some tech can be v useful. For instance for a writing task, getting students to write into a Google doc using smartphones, each student or pair on a different page. They can edit easily and then scroll to look at and review other students' work. Also you can display it on the board and comment altogether.
@elttraining14 күн бұрын

Thank you for the tips. But this context, in my experience, would likely complicate the concepts of conditionals 1 and 2. I guess a better context would be two people who are talking about what they'd do if they became the president. You can have one famous politician like Trump saying what "he will do if he becomes president" and a regular Joey. The regular Joey says, "What he would do if he became the president."

You make such great points here! What are potential/new students afraid of the most? That we will be impatient, or downright mean, when they make mistakes.
