I wish the new chorus was "Its her or me, now". Adding the extra word now at the end, allows the same syllables as "Now that I've seen her", meaning the final note of the chorus can be sung as well. Without it, as "Its her or me", it just feels like a part of the song is missing. I get that Now is also the next word of many of the versus. But, it still feels like a part of the song is missing.

This is BY FAR, *THE* most gut-wrenching song of the entire musical. Listening to John describe the twisting dagger in his chest that is Kim's reaction: elation and sheer relief knowing Chris is finally in the same city as she and her son at long last, all the while knowing the tragic truth. Ugh.

By far the best version of this song. When it changed to Now that I’ve seen her it took away the real dilemma that Ellen faced. To then replace even that with the awful Maybe is a desecration and I’m surprised the powers that be can’t see that. Maybe just makes Ellen weak

What many people don't know is that there was also another version of this song used in really early productions called "Who says I'm hurt?"; which in my opinion is the best version of the song because it really shows Ellen as a victim of war. These are the lyrics I was able to transcribe from a recording of one of the first productions of the show: What did I do? Why did I come here? What other things Has he not told me? I'm such a fool To think I'd trust her I want to leave This awful city How can I leave And know he's with her? I take it back I give up hope I feel like this is near the end There are days There are days when I think I'm crazy I lose touch It's all wrong You love a man so much it blinds your eyes In the night When I lie awide awake for hours And the man who's by my side Is a man who lies Is a disguise Who says it hurts? He's the one man I want Now this girl in love Comes to call Who says I'm hurt? Just cause I just woke up In the arms of a man that I dont know at all When we met In the night He'd be locked I'd hear him groan Day and night Can't he grow? He would take me for his long lost bride (Very incoherent; best guess: Taking him by his young adulterous pride (?)) But it worked Because I'm his wife Who says it hurts? He's the one man I want Now this girl in love Comes to call Who says I'm hurt? Just cause I just woke up In the arms of a man that I don't Maybe I wont ever know at all

Omg thank you!! I’ve been trying to figure out this version’s lyrics for months! This version was used on the very first preview of the Original London production, and I believe it went through many revisions before the opening night.
@asdjhfkj
@asdjhfkj Жыл бұрын
Or even after the opening night - it also went through some more revision before they settled with the one they used for the cast recording. Here’s one of them: I don’t want this, Don’t want to fight her What did I do? I didn’t come here To meet a girl who loves my husband Chris has a son, he has to see him But if he does, she’ll be there with him I came here to help but what do I do? Now after this… what can I do? Out that door Is a girl who’s life is shattered She believe and she’s right That I’m the one who came to crush her dreams In this room Is a woman who’s also shattered For I dream I’m also right What she was to him, I’ll never be Now that I’ve seen her There’s no way to hide She is not some fling from long ago Now that I’ve seen her I know why he lied And I think it was better when I didn’t know In her eyes In her voice In the heat that filled the air Part of him still lingers there I know what pain her life today must be But if it all comes down to her or me I won’t wait, I swear I’ll fight Now that I’ve seen her She’s more than a name She was not some fling from long ago Now that I’ve seen her I can’t stay the same He’s the man that I truly wanted Does he still want me? I have to know

@@asdjhfkj happy to be of help to you. I personally still prefer her or me to now that I've seen her, but I do like the different starting lyrics in the version that you put here. She's more pitiful towards kim, but after some decision, she decides that she still wants chris for herself and is still angry that chris lied. This may be an unpopular opinion, but who say's it hurts? is my favorite version of the ellen song

I will never understand how people blame Ellen for anything. She married a man who didn't tell her he was married another woman! I would say that everyone in the story has some guilt and some responsibility but Ellen probably has the least! She didn't know about Tam and she didn't know Chris was married. Chris should have told her what happened even though his actions are understandable and he did try to locate Kim when he got back to the states. John shouldn't have been thinking of women as meat and a thrill even though he sees the error of his ways and tries to do something about it through the Bui-Doi Foundation. Kim literally kills herself, deprives her son of his mother and decides it is better to die than to allow her son to be taken care of in another way. Again, her pain is real and understandable but her actions are no less damaging to her son, Claire and Chris. The story is about tragedy, choices and responsibility. Claire did almost nothing wrong and people call her names. Some have let their compassion for Kim to cloud their own thinking. I'm sure most people WOULD NOT do anything different than Claire if they found themselves in her place. Get real! Rant over!

view Lyrics Videos Other recordings Listen Artists Main Results Last night I watched him sleeping, My body pressed to him. And then he started speaking. The name I heard him speak was Kim... Yes, I know that this was years ago, But when moonlight fills my room I know You are here, still. I still- I still believe You will return. I know you will. My heart against all odds Holds still. Yes, still, I still believe. I know as long as I can keep believing, I'll live. I'll live, Love cannot die. You will return, you will return, And I alone know why... Last night I watched you sleeping. Once more the nightmare came. I heard you cry out something, A word that sounded like a name. And it hurts me more than I can bear Knowing part of you I'll never share, Never know. But still- I still believe The time will come When nothing keeps us apart. My heart forever more holds still. It's all over I'm here, There is nothing to fear! Chris, what's haunting you? Won't you let me inside What you so want to hide. I need you too! Ellen: Kim: I will Hold you all night for still I will make it all right You are safe with me I still believe And I wish you could tell As long as I What you don't want to tell Can keep believing You can sleep now I'll Live... They are not nice, they're mostly noise They swear like men, they screw like boys I know there's nothing in their hearts But every time I take one in my arms It starts The movie in my mind The dream they leave behind A scene I can't erase And in a strong GI's embrace Flee this life Flee this place The movie plays and plays I'll find my true romance He takes me to a place Where I don't have to dance Our children laugh all day But all that I've been through Can't make my dream come true Dream The dream I long to find The movie in my mind I will not cry, I will not think I'll do my dance, I'll make them drink When I make love, it won't be me And if they hurt me, I'll just close my eyes And see (They are not nice, they're mostly noise) The movie in my mind (They kill like men, they die like boys) The dream that fills my head (They give their cash, they keep their hearts) A man who will not kill (But every night again it starts) Who'll fight for me instead He'll keep the fear at bay So no one comes at night To blow the dream away Dream The dream I have to find The movie in my mind And in a strong GI's embrace Flee this life Flee this place A world that's far away Where life is not unkind The movie in my mind

[KIM] From this picture I keep You, my parents, look out And you smiles show no scorn I am happy today For I know what to do And my heart is not torn Spirits know when to fly When it's time There's no reson to mourn For the great sacred bird is reborn From the ashes he'll rise And upon his wide wings I'll watch you from above I will never be far But my son, it's your turn To know your father's love I know now why I came To this earth It's so you find your place But for that I must leave your embrace You will be with Your father now Give all your love to him When I am gone Take one last look at me Don't forget what you see For now you must move on You will be who you want to be - you Can choose whatever heaven grants As long as you can have your chance I swear I'll give my life for you No one will stop what I mjst do My son, I'll give my life for you (She kisses TAM, prays before the shrine, hears people approching, blows out the candles. This is excellent simply by being slow and giving time for the contents to sink in. Most versions rush though at a ridiculous pace. I don't know why. The acting is mostly quite good except for the part where Chris goes into a rant. Both Chris and Ellen generally sing well, but both have one or two off moments. Simon Bowman thankfully keeps his vibrato in check here.
@detectivefiction3701
@detectivefiction3701 2 жыл бұрын
Why do people criticize singers for having vibrato? The fact is that all healthy and well-trained singing voices have it! Of course, I'm talking about proper vibrato and not a wobble that affects the pitch, which is NOT what Simon Bowman had.
