People need to realise that a lot of people get killed on the hard shoulder pulling over or even making the manoeuvre to one side of the road across running lanes killed people. The child is not a safest you think it is it’s also knowing for inflation today based on averages for awhile ago is about £100 million a mile to extend the hard shoulder to add another lane simply it’s going to a few billion just for a small section so this is not practical unless people are willing to pay for it if you see controller there are thousands of cameras on every smart motorway also the systems are redundant. You need to understand that the cameras are on a set system the radar on a separate system. The signs are on a separate system so it’s not that hard to take the whole thing down most issues occur from drivers being stupid they create so many issues for the highway staff that they can’t monitor for an accident because they dealing with other drivers.

Just give me one more lane bro! It's not like building more and more new roads has consistently failed to 'fix traffic' since the 1960's, is it?

They should admit the technology is a failure. Also you can't expect people to watch every camera all the time and react in 3-4 seconds, even then a 70mph vehicle may be past the gantry. The safer way is a 50mph blanket speed limit with a no hard shoulder motorway, like an urban expressway. On the motorways over the last week there were what could be called excuse roadworks to put a 50mph limit in place, e.g. M25. Tech motorways more like people in departments building careers, than improving anything.

IT would also be nice if could clear derbies from the road/ edge; broken glass and tyres are often left near to the inner most lanes. In standstill traffic vehicles often move right to the central reservation to give way to emergency vehicles and end up running over this bits risking a puncture

You could also consider setting a short number for people to report issues to you such as debris or something which could be hazardous and/or working with google maps/ waze to detect if there are any issues on the road

Nice information. But it would be nice to have working over head signage which works, give clear indications, red x and speed restrictions when recovery or the vehicle rejoins. I commute on M25 and M4 and on both there have been signs which are blank or faulty, which causes confusion and some drivers to start speeding up and undertaking

Maybe an infographic for internal staff would be better? Perhaps you should actually update your policy to ensure your advisors close lanes with ‘Red X’ signs and not lane diverts when people leave these death traps!

Instead of expanding the pipe they are just adding a tap to reduce flow. 20 years sitting in traffic and this is the BS the forn.ing p.files come up with. It's at best adequate, but the country isn't run by business savvy leaders or transport pioneering individuals. No wonder the dinghy fraternity see this country as easy picking.

I took hundreds of photographs of the M6 being widened between 1993 and 1995. I even hired a microlight and took a photo of Tickled Trout junction in 1993. I was photographing Whittingham Hospital and the derelict St John Southworth School site close to the M6 so I took advantage of the opportunity of being up in the air by taking photos of the M6 as well. Balfour Beatty based in Croydon was the principal contractor of the whole project but contractors like Clive Hurt based in Leyland got their fair share of work. Gregory Demolition removed all the bridges and was based in Essex. The viaduct at the River Ribble was ‘lifted’ and raised higher in different stages after the support piers was refurbished and strengthened resulting in the M6 being higher than when it was first built. The widening actually took place to the east of the M6. There was a bend in the old M6 near Longsands Lane and this bend in motorway provided the opportunity to construct the underpass for Bluebell Way without closing lanes. The construction of the underpass never disrupted the movements on the old M6 whilst maintaining the safety of construction workers. The first phase of the widening of the M6 actually took place in August 1992 when a huge gas main was diverted to the east of the M6 on the old Longridge Railway. There was travelers illegally camping on the old railway at the time. Things went very quiet after the gas main was moved. I decided to photograph all the bridges between J 31 and 32 at the end of September/early October 1992. I started at Durton Lane to the north and progressed down towards Ribbleton. Construction work officially started in March 1993 and early phases of work involved felling of trees. The culverts of Sandy Brook and Eaves Brook was extended on the east side only. The water in the Brook was sucked into large flexible pipes which passed through the culvert to the west side. The same applied to Savick Brook. I photographed the new Pope Lane Bridge being lifted into place one night from nearby Boilton Wood. Prior to lifting the bridge in place the new bridge was lying on the ground where the new lanes for the M6 had been cut out. The bridge was wrapped in tarpaulins. I remember Longridge Railway Line being demolished ( I was there on Friday and Saturday night in May 1993. The new bridge was erected in around 1994 only to be removed a week or so later due to faults being detected. A 50 MPH speed limit was imposed though out the widening project and there was a free recovery service to remove any motorists that had broken down. This was monitored by special cameras erected at the side of the motorway. The site speed limit was 10MPH for Works traffic and there was special designated places where construction traffic could pull off the motorway to specific numbered sites. I believe some of the newly laid tarmac failed a test and was removed and relaid. Much of the M6 was levelled off and was raised in certain places. This was evident around Hindley House Bridge in Fulwood that links Midgery Lane to Ladywell Shrine via a footpath. There appears to be evidence of subsiding on the southern abutment over Fernyhalgh Lane. Cracking in the concrete can be seen. The new Longridge Road Bridge isn’t entirely new. The existing central pier in the central reserve was originally the abutment of the old bridge. The concrete decking of the old bridge along with the parapets was demolished on a Friday night. The steel work was removed the following night leaving behind the concrete a brick abutment. Part of the abutment was retained and turned into a bridge support pier before being cladded in brick when the steel work was lifted into place. I remember the M6 Widening very well. I kept all the newspaper cuttings and also videotaped the M6 from Broughton to Samlesbury in January 1994. I did similar with the M65 Bamber Bridge to Blackburn but the security was hostile due to motorway protests taking place there.

Trees are one of the most invasive species. Just see how they populate redundant railway and canal routes. However there is no money in letting nature take its course.

Invasive species are organisms not indigenous or native to an area. National Highways promotes planting of native tree species. Active planting programmes speed up the establishment of beneficial tree cover. To be welcomed, not sniped at.

It's not particularly inviting if all the street lights we used to know as kids are vanished from out motorways. Like the motorways look so barren and empty now without them. Like the M1 for instance. Yes don't light up much of it but you could have kept the lights. They symbolised the parts of the motorway we were on.

If you're on a smart motorway, never drive in the first lane. Always leave it empty so people can still use it as a hard shoulder. Don't take any notice of Highways or anyone else that tells you otherwise. It's safer not to use lane 1 now.

Don't worry everyone. They've updated the policy so that lane 1 can still be active when you attempt to leave the emergency bays. No longer will they put a Red X on, they'll set you a lovely little lane divert on instead. The one too many people ignore and do not get a fine for failing to move over. Just remember, get a fast car. You'll need that or luck to get back on the motorway.
@MadBiker-vj5qj

@National Highways. Why are your operators refusing to shut lanes for vehicles to re-join? All they will do now is put up a "lane divert" arrow- which is routinely ignored. This pathetic new policy WILL result in deaths if continued. The person(s) who came up with this bad idea will be responsible for those deaths.
