I think there is a reason spray dodgers are made from canvas and not fiberglass, I can't see it lasting very well.
@From_Refugee_To_Yacht_Owner17 күн бұрын
@@rjk69 Thanks for your comment-it’s a great point! Canvas has indeed been the traditional choice for spray dodgers because it’s lightweight, flexible, and relatively easy to replace or repair. However, it does require regular maintenance, such as waterproofing and UV protection, as it can degrade faster in harsh conditions like prolonged sun exposure or saltwater spray. Fiberglass, on the other hand, is significantly more rigid and durable over the long term, especially in high-wear areas. It doesn’t rot, stretch, or shrink like canvas can, and it offers better resistance to UV rays and saltwater. For example, many modern hard tops on yachts are made of fiberglass for these reasons, and they’ve proven to last decades with minimal maintenance. That said, canvas dodgers often have an advantage in terms of cost and ease of customization. It’ll be interesting to see how the fiberglass holds up in this application-I’ll definitely keep everyone updated on its performance!

Even reputable manufacturers make mistakes. Our winch is positioned perfectly for the bow roller but badly for storing the anchor chain in the locker and it didn't have a backing plate. With a little thought, it could have been positioned better to satisfy both bow roller and chain storage. I suppose I could change the construction but can't justify the effort.
@From_Refugee_To_Yacht_Owner17 күн бұрын
@@peterbooth2804 Thanks for sharing your experience-it’s so true that even reputable manufacturers can overlook these details! The issue with the backing plate and chain storage alignment sounds frustrating but also familiar in these setups. If you had the chance to start over, how would you approach positioning to balance the bow roller and chain locker better? Any tips would be really helpful as I decide on my windlass placement!

Can you explain why a pressure gauge is used?
@From_Refugee_To_Yacht_Owner27 күн бұрын
@@LouisBackover A pressure gauge is installed on a fuel polisher system to monitor the pressure within the system, typically before and after the fuel filters. This helps detect any clogs or blockages in the filters, as a rising pressure indicates restricted flow due to contaminants. By monitoring pressure, the gauge allows operators to identify when filters need cleaning or replacement, ensuring efficient fuel flow, protecting the system’s components, and maintaining overall engine performance and reliability.
@LouisBackover27 күн бұрын
@From_Refugee_To_Yacht_Owner follow-up questions... This is a fuel polishing system (Y/N)? Will you polish all fuel as it's being sent from the tank to the engine? Or is it for polishing fuel being sent directly to the tank upon fill-up? If it's polishing all fuel from tank to engine, does this sit before, after, or in place of fuel/water separators?
@From_Refugee_To_Yacht_Owner27 күн бұрын

The other channel byou should keep an eye out for is Sailing Tritia .. James is the the Captain sailing a vintage fiberglass boat .. he was sailing solo till he reached NZ and met a local lady and found himself a fellow traveler. He even looks like a vintage pirate ... With the body art of an old time sailor. He likes to keep things simple ...though his engine has caused him a lot of grief at one stage. He also hit a container and lost his rudder on his way to Hawaii his first leg.

How much electricity does something like that generate
@LouisBackover3 ай бұрын
Came here to ask the same thing. I think mine only out 15w. Thinking of removing mine all together when I add 400w fixed solar panels
@From_Refugee_To_Yacht_Owner3 ай бұрын
According to the website: The Rutland 913 wind turbine is a popular choice among sailors for its efficiency and durability, particularly in low to moderate wind conditions. It is well-regarded for its ability to generate electricity consistently, even in lower wind speeds. Here are the general specifications for the electricity it can generate: • Wind Speed and Power Output: • At 10 knots (around 5 m/s), it can produce approximately 20 watts. • At 19 knots (around 10 m/s), it can generate about 140 watts. • At its peak, in wind speeds of around 30 knots (about 15 m/s), it can produce up to 240 watts. These figures represent the power output under ideal conditions, and actual performance can vary depending on factors such as wind consistency, installation height, and environmental conditions. The Rutland 913 is designed to work well in a marine environment, making it a reliable choice for sailors looking to maintain battery charge during longer voyages.
@From_Refugee_To_Yacht_Owner3 ай бұрын
I will not remove mine due the English weather. The sun is not consistent even in summer. I will be upgrading my power bank “ batteries “ at some point and I would rather have the mix of both wind and solar as opposed to just solar.
