I actually got to see this plane years back while out in the field, I heard this unique-sounding plane, and when I looked up, I immediately knew what it was. It was approx at around 3000 ft high and traveled in the direction of San Antonio. It was a treat watching it.

Was state of the art in 1942. Still flying today and reliable in the hands of those who know. Sad when unforeseen accidents happen. But I suppose the lesson here is an example of what those airmen went through during WWII. It was sad then when a crew was lost, and just as sad today. Some knew then, and now we certainly know it wasn't as glamorous as portrayed in all those WWII movies we watch. We are grateful for those heroes who climbed into those machines knowing the risks they were taking every time they flew into the unknown.

More then 600,000 blameless German civilians were murdered, roasted alive, buried alive, and turned to ashes by the thousands of B-17 raids upon civilians centers in Germany, in just the 2 years between April, 1943, and April 1945. B-17s dropped three types of bombs on civilians centers: (1) Incendiary bombs, known later as "Napalm", they consist of jelled gasoline which ignites horrible fire storms. (2) "Block Buster" bombs: These flatten entire city blocks, usually burying hundreds of people alive beneath tons of rubble. (3) "Delayed Fuse Time Bombs". Very little is ever mentioned about these insidious bombs, which explode 12 to 16 hours after hitting the ground, these explosives were designed to kill firemen, rescue workers, and children playing in the rubble, the next day. My knowledge comes from first hand eye witness accounts. The term "B17" has a horrible meaning to many in Europe.
