This is one of the most informative lathe-related videos I've ever seen. Added bonus: it has a wonderful ASMR effect too, at least for me. Thank You, Thank You, Thank You.

As a professional watchmaker i am amazed at what you do in your workshop. Actually the energy the system "needs" dictates the aplitude if the balance. so with a fixed weight the balance can only reach a certain amplitude. you can optimize this by corecting the beat error or less friction everywhere

I’m offering a Maho SK250 for sale (on eBay and marketplace), I’m helping out a friend as the owner their husband passed away and I can find virtually nothing online for the machine, bar a small info sheet. I wonder anyone here can offer far info on the machine such as original manual? Many thanks PS the video has been very helpful and insightful with regards to the quill and where it’s required

Obsidian scalpels are used in eye surgery because they can slice a single cell in half and not damage the cells on either side of it.

So I think about something very tiny and using something else very tiny to cut it. Because if I used something big that would be unwieldy and it wouldn't be able to cut it with the accuracy I need. And so I think about how what are some things in my life that I could sharpen that could give me a better granularity on life. And show how sometimes things need something that is small but sharp rather than big and blunt. And so I think about how better understanding my emotions could be the sharp thing that I could cut even the most delicate situations in my life with because they have the granularity needed to understand them.

I am currently reading a book by Christopher Dunn on the Pyramids. he writes that even advanced modern machining techniques would find it difficult to make the granite tombs in the pyramids and the valley of the kings to the same precision made 3000 years back

A joy to watch! Enjoyed the work and the beautiful tools/shops. There are already 638 comments, so I hope I am not horribly redundant. I am an amateur in this arena, but a seasoned mechanical engineer. A few sources of energy losses and hence causes of inefficiency will be the following: Anything that has friction, such as gear losses, bearing losses (yes rolling elements are usually quite low loss). Are any axial fits allowing faces of parts to touch and cause friction loss? If the balance wheel contacts the sides of the spring there is a high relative velocity and associated friction loss. The balance wheel will produce a loss due to air friction. If you could remeasure in a vacuum chamber, you could quantify this loss. I think the escapement wheel involves both rubbing motion (friction) and impacts. The impact noise is itself indicative of a loss. The noise is energy. The less noise the less loss. This might be the greatest source of lost energy. I imagine the smoother contacts, (reduced impact distance of each fall) will demand greater precision. The spring itself will have some internal loss, but I imagine it is a very small loss, as almost all of the potential energy is converted to kinetic and back again.

Hi, thank you for capturing the work and taking the time to edit and upload. I would suspect some inefficiency is coming from the bearing in lieu of the gem. Thanks again, I’ve now subscribed to the channel.
