I would never expect for you to tell me where you live in Virginia, but... my husband just purchased 4 Mexican Fan Palms for me. I have lots of palms, but they all have to come inside. I have just dipped my toe into cold hardy palms by purchasing windmill palms. I watched your Mexican fan palm video and that did it, hubs purchased the Mexicans because I talked about it. My question is, while I'm also in 7b, I know that I have driven through 7b in Virginia and seem snow in one end and zero snow an hour later, so I suspect that not all 7b's are equal. So, I'm located in Buckingham County va, and want to know if I'm possibly too far north of you to follow your advice about winter protection using burlap and Christmas lights alone. Do you think it's possible that I'm too far north of your 7b to follow the same winter plan?

Were these sabals grown in pots and then transplanted into the ground? Curious.

They are growing Sabal minor in Washington, DC at the air and space museum, and even in New York city there are some plants in some of the parks. I'm not sure how long they'll make it but people will try. Palmplanet and others had a vid on this. There is a Needle palm at the Smithsonian in DC that's over 50 years old, they also have a Tracy growing there maybe 30 years old.

Here in Qarsherskiy (Virginia Peninsula) we have a native palm, Sabal minor, but it became less common here after colonization when all woods cut down and cleared for farmlands, their northernmost range is somewhere just south of the North Carolina border. I sometimes see Sabal minor palms in the woods here, nobody believe me. Before the last ice age, they as well as needle palms grew here.

Oleanders are pretty frost tender in general, but there are cultivars that can handle deep freezes but often only frozen to the ground. I wouldn't cut them down though sometimes they even come back from the little stems. But there are no Zone 7 Oleanders for sure. They are borderline in most Zone 8 areas already. I'd say that at least some damage occurs ON ANY VARIETY from -5°C and below...

Here in West Virginia we had a very bad freeze it got well below the negative numbers in temperature around Christmas and the week following, then It got warm here. Your palms look like they did very well in the low temps 👍

Thanks for the update. The Sabal looks like it survived. The lights look good. Now that we are having milder weather I uncovered all of mine to take a look. My Needle Palm looks great - no damage ( I used a mini portable greenhouse with no heat). I did have some frost damage with the other's like yours here in SE MI we got down to about 4 degrees 2 days in a row.

Nice job protecting your palms! I'm curious to know whether those were record low temperatures for that particular date or if they were all time record low temperatures in your area. Regardless, I always find the USDA plant hardiness zones to be strange given that they only signify the AVERAGE minimum winter temperatures for a year (rather than extreme). I'm curious to know your take on the hardiness zones and whether this cold snap influenced what plants you consider hardy to your area.
@virginiapalms436

to try and make a long answer short, I feel that in the last 20 years, 10 especially, average temperatures have increased and with that, the extreme lows are less and less. Talking to people who grew up here in Charlottesville VA (zone 7) 40- 50 years ago they say that the winters use to be much colder and for much longer. It would be normal for lakes to be frozen and to see single digit and low teen temps. I can say, growing up here that I've only seen single digit temps a handful of times ( once maybe every 7-10 years). This is not to mention the summers recently being much more hot and humid than ever in history for this region. our average winter temps are 26-46 about in the winter. The summer averages are 67-87. For winter, in the last 10-15 years particularly, temps are around 25/30-50/55 and some winters we have stints of 60-70 degree weather. And in the summer, most days are above 90 and the humidity is sweltering. Lows are around 70. With regard to plants, I've seen a few sabal minors and needle palms and trachys around and plenty of bananas and the odd live oak. Climate change has made it easier to grow more exotic plants in places they usually wouldn't grow, and I think that an update of the usda hardiness map is in order given how rapidly this change seems to be happening. Yes of course we still get some extreme cold days and nights, but hey are far fewer and in recent years, they may happen once or twice a year. Charlottesvilles weather now, mimics that of places in North Carolina like Raleigh and Charlotte.

It looks like you did not protect the banana plant stalks. Those then should just be cut down to ground level and mulch over the forum in the ground that stalk will not come back sorry to say without some protection

Great video! Love the protection on the washy. I bought a 15gal trachy from Florida and it is not near as hardy as my other one from SC. Do you know how many winters it would take for it to adapt and improve its hardiness?
@virginiapalms436
@virginiapalms436 Жыл бұрын
It may take 3 years or so to become established enough it should be okay. However, if the seed of the mother palm was from a warmer climate the palm won’t be as hardy just as a matter of fact. A palm grown from seed sourced in Virginia will be hardier than seed sourced from a palm in Florida.
@andrewspalmsoftennessee5332
@andrewspalmsoftennessee5332 Жыл бұрын
@@virginiapalms436 Yeah I believe the mother seed was from Gainesville, FL. It started taking damage to the foliage at 29F this year before I wrapped it. I'm hoping I can push it to adapt quicker but not sure if that actually works
@Robert-ki7bz
@Robert-ki7bz Жыл бұрын
@@andrewspalmsoftennessee5332 I think you'll be surprised. Gainesville is one of the colder areas of Florida and it tends to get colder there than some parts of South Carolina along the coast. One variety may have superior genetics for survival, regardless.

I ran lights on my windmill last night (I’m up in nova south of dc), hopefully yours makes it out ok. Only the dark red and white oleander varieties seem to take the cold ok, my red oleander only has burnt tips as of right now. Pink seems to be significantly less Hardy from my experience. Best of luck brother.

I'm in Washington state and I just try to keep my trees dry and if it gets into the 20's I cover them in dry leaves and blankets. This is the first winter for some species tho. Coldest last year was like 15. And I don't really get sunshine until spring because of the clouds and angle of the sun. happy growing!

Even though your area occasionally experiences temperatures that could damage live oak, heavy snow is also a real concern. In the late 70s, record snowfall caused extensive damage to 100 year old live oaks at Mariners Museum in Newport News. Trees lost branches that were 18”+ in diameter. It was devastating. While removing snow as it accumulates in the branches works for the young trees, there is little that can be done to protect more mature live oaks from heavy snow

In Finland, it has been snowing for the past month non-stop but now it suddenly got warmer so the snow is melting. Next week it will get cold again and we should get some pretty cold temps, possibly -10C.

I’m up in central New Jersey. I threw blankets over my two trackys during last week’s cold spell. Thy look fine. I’m going to wrap them up in burlap next week. My Musa Basjoo bananas bit the dust but they come back every year. I cut them down and spread the area with the old leaves and mulch as protection for the winter. My Chicago fig is supposed to survive to -10F. It survived to 12F last winter but the branches all died out but the base grew new foliage and I got some figs.
