I listened to this song growing up, my first adult romantic relationship ended yesterday. Never listened to lyrics much but these make sense now. Its a man who loves someone and they mistreat him, and have trouble loving themselves let alone accepting others love. he keeps loving something that deep down loves them but whose demons destroy him, wants him to be someone he's not, make him a shell of himself. It's a song about a vulnerable man knowing he needs to let the love in his heart die for his own good and move on

This was also in the Vietnam War by Ken Burns (episode 2, during the bit about the Bhudist persecution). When I heard this I checked if it was older than old town road because it would be crazy to see a Vietnam documentary sample old town Road. Aa soon as I saw the documentary was older I knew they were sampling another song. Thus I found this song.
