As an ambulance safety consultant, you can't imagine all the crashes that are caused by distracted driving. You would think of all the crashes some of these medics see because of distracted driving, they would drive more safely. Some still don't even wear their seat belt!

What does it cost to insure classic Cadillac ambulances such as these?
@vintageambulancechronicles3022 жыл бұрын
It's really very reasonable. The premium is based on the value of the car and how much it is driven. Much less than my other daily drivers.

Love that rig! Also that’s an awesome story. I have been in EMS since 1985. I owned a 73 Miller Coach for a few years. I had to sell it when I moved out of state. I kick myself all the time for letting that car out of my hands.

Why did some station wagon ambulances have curtains but others didn't? I wouldn't think too many people would want to be able to see a mangled body inside.
@vintageambulancechronicles3022 жыл бұрын
I have pull up shades that were built into the doors and side windows. Never used them back in the day. As far as a mangled body goes, not often. And the ones that were most likely were dead, and we placed them on a portable stretcher on the floor where they couldn't be seen.

Excellent narration. Very professional voice and delivery. My favorite is a 1968 Cadillac/Superior Coach with the bullet warning lights.
@vintageambulancechronicles3022 жыл бұрын
The 68 Superior has great lines and those bullet lights just added to the unique styling. One thing with the large engine is the car does not rocket off the line. It takes awhile to build up the speed...just like a freight train. But once it's at cruise speed, that engine just purrs.

It looks great with the proper steel wheels and hubcaps. Just wondering why you didn't put whitewalls on it. Were they too hard to find, or another reason?
@vintageambulancechronicles3022 жыл бұрын
The original build had blackwall tires and I wanted to keep it as original as I could. I do think a nice whitewall would have looked nice......

i’m just a Car guy in general and i enjoyed this video for Entertainment and a little bit more information than i had before watching this interestingly My Great Grandparents purchased a Beach Bungalow in the 1940s in a small town pretty far East onLong Island New York and as a large family we still have yearly get togethers on a Beach nearby this town for over 35 years of my life i had visited this location every year and there was a Old Cadillac Ambulance parked in a fenced in Lot that someone had installed a Truck Camper on top of the rear section of the Amnulance it wasn’t beautifull but always made me smile to see it because of how Unique it was i’ve seen several others made that way throughout my travels not exactly the same but with the same Intent but different Equipment the one in that small town was a mid to late 1960s Caddallac with what i suspect to be a 1970s Truck Camper that would typically get strapped onto a Trucks Bed and be a Fully self contained Motor Home the other one i saw on a trip in the Midwest was of later Vehicles and parts i beleive a 1970s Caddallac Ambulance similiar to the one you own i’m assuming the builders of them had to chop off parts of the original cars to make the Slide in Camper fit the cars roof i also know that for many years that Hot Rodders and Moonshiners used to try and buy the older Caddilac Ambulances because they had one of the largest Cubic Inch and Powerful Engines made by American Car Manufactures i grew up inFlorida and those old Caddy motors are also the CrownJewels to use on Air boats to power the Propellas because of theirvTouquevand heavy Castings on the engine Blocks i don’t have any Ambulance Vehicles myself or plans on getting any but i do enjoybAutomobile History and other stories

Hi Dave . Boy do I remember those Model 30s and there was one time when we were at the hospital, and the only ambulance available in our county . I was part of our EMS Career Explorer group made up of guys and girls 16 to 21 who wanted to pursue a career in EMS . We had a call come in for an allergic reaction and the 3 of us had to clear in a hurry . The gurney was out in the ER hallway and I just put clean sheets and a fresh pillow on it . So , I grabbed the darn thing , headed for the rig walking at a fast pace and managed to get it in by myself with no help at all , under a minute ! Then , I hopped in the jump seat and went for the ride . Our service was owned by the county Coroner , who was a great guy to work for , but sometimes he had bad days and on bad days when he was in a bad mood or stressed out the less you talked to him the better . We had 4 ambulances with 2 spare being a 1970 Suburban and a 1968 Pontiac combo unit that did duty at a funeral home in another county and was acquired by their ambulance service . That day we were busy . We had an ambulance going to Boise transporting a cardiac patient to a hospital there for Cardiac Catherization . Another unit was tied up on a seizure call , and another was at a call where a toddler had fell while running and had a laceration to his chin . I myself and the Advanced EMTs I was with took 5 calls that day . If I can recall them besides the allergic reaction , we had 2 traffic accidents , a guy that got beat up by his ex girlfriend's new boyfriend , and a non emergency transport of a patient from her hospital room to home recovering from double knee surgery .

I was 17 and took my EMT course in Connecticut during my senior year in high school. My first ambulance job paid $3.50 an hour. I spent one year before college working 80 hours per week and more and my first ambulance was a Miller Meteor Lifeliner. I chose that each shift over the Ford vans and just one year later Caddis were taken out of service. I then spent the next 20 plus years in EMS. I always wanted to buy a Caddy ambulance so these videos are absolutely amazing to me. Congrats on your beautiful ambulance. PS. I should mention that the EMT course was in 1981.

Is that the same font used for “Star Trek: The Next Generation” logo at the beginning? A little tad bit I noticed is the blue on your MM reminds me of the bluish, greenish uniforms that Star fleet’s medical officers wear, especially in TOS

HI Dave, I really enjoy your videos. Started my EMS career in 1969 between my junior and senior year of college. We had home grown GMC Suburbans with the Q2B on the roof and the old low boy cots. Even though I graduated in 1970 and got my degree in clinical psychology, I enlisted in the Navy and became a Hospital Corpsman and on discharge decided to pursue the ambulance business in Orlando, Florida. As you may recall EMS was on the cusp of becoming a paramedical industry, especially with the hit TV show Emergency which first aired in 1971. My brother-in-law and I manned what was called the Cardiac Unit ambulance 24/6 and served as the pilot for the matching funds grant to start the paramedic program which came 2 years later in 1975. After becoming a paramedic that same year, I realized that the private sector ambulance service didn't offer any type of pension benefits, etc., so I became a firefighter/paramedic with the county and retired after 26 years at age 55 with a nice pension. You asked about the fold away squad bench which was something M/M came out with for their Criterions to try and meet the KKK specs for ambulances and it had something to do with the free space dimension between the cot and the squad bench. Well I've been way to long-winded here so keep the videos coming, cheers.

Glad you like the videos! I don't really like watching as I find myself critiquing every word that comes out of my mouth. LOL I worked out of one of those Suburbans that did not have any ambulance interior modifications. How it passed the state inspection I'll never know. "Money talks and BS walks" LOL I have more videos cued up and with more stories from back in the day. Again thanks for watching!!

Glad to see you are going back with the steel rims and correct wheel covers. I remember putting a Twin-Sonic on a 1972 C/B Olds hightop and having to fabricate the mounting points, although I used the gutter mount brackets supplied by Federal and it worked out well. I had purchased the Twin-Sonic myself, so when I left that service I took it with me because the owners were too cheap to buy it from me. I think I paid $350 for it in 1973.
