I plan on taking English literature next year and everyone keeps talking about how difficult it can be since its not our first language but seriously this video comforted me so much and made me believe that I can do it. I deeply love English in general. so if you see this you can do it!! thank so much for your advice and ill be back for more this year 🩷🩷

I think your argument is a bit flawed, as you just assume that liberals are "better" than conservatives, that it's only conservatives who ban books, that liberals have more empathy than conservatives. I consider myself somewhere in the middle of the road politically, so I get especially frustrated with "us/them" talk, especially when it's under the guise of supposedly being open to other worldviews. If you can't empathize with a politically conservative person from your own country/culture, how do you expect to empathize with people from drastically different backgrounds whose political beliefs might be even more reprehensible to you? You also conflate book "bans" with other forms of censorship. A true book ban is when a person is not able to even purchase a book for themselves if they so choose. The most banned book ever is, in fact, the Bible. Requiring books in public schools to be generally appropriate for *all* the children there is not book banning. Parents can buy books for their kids that they want them to have, or they can get them from a public library. But having it in a public school, or specifically *teaching* material that is constantly being challenged by the parents of many kids is unnecessary and does more harm than good. I enjoyed watching your video just the same, and have subscribed! 😁

Thank you for your insightful comment. I think I could definitely benefit from a more nuanced exploration of liberals, as I did not mean to assume that they are necessarily better, but did end up centering more on criticising the 'more conservative' arguments used as justification in recent years for bans. Bans vs Censorship should also have been better explained, but I nonetheless do believe that literature should be less censored, and books that have appeared on the list invariably seem to follow a certain pattern, and similar justification. Thank you for your thoughts, and for subscribing!

Great review. I am just shy of half way into Enter Ghost. I am not really enjoying the novel but your views have spurred me on. I agree Sonia isn't the most interesting character. She is not from my world but I am suffiently interested in the politics of Israel/Palestine to continue reading and your questions certainly adds food for thought.

brilliant work! I have read some continental philosophy mostly around epistemology and ethics such as Kant, Hegel, and Nietzsche. I never got an opportunity to read the french philosphers especially Simone de Beauvoir. I encountered Philosophers of Science citing Beauvoir's Second Sex and I always wanted to read the whole book. Watching your video has just made me wanna buy the book as soon as I can :)). I am especially interested in the women empowerment movement happening in the Soviet Union, and Beauvoir's critic on it. I think this will be a great read indeed. As a feminist I believe this book is of a paramount importance for us.

Thank you so much for your detailed comment, it is always fascinating for me to read comments such as these and hear thoughts on works of such paramount importance. I absolutely agree that this is a feminist must read, as this is a key foundational text. Which texts would you recommend from continental philosophy? I am actually the opposite, I mostly read French philosophers but no one else unfortunately haha. It always makes me really happy to hear that people buy a book because of me, and curious to hear their thoughts. Please do update me on what you think of Beauvoir's Second Sex.

@@PolinasPages ahh I think usually it's a good idea to start with Kantian Critiques (3 books, but you can just get most of it from first few chapters), and especially critique of Judgement! Followed by a lil bit of Hegel (which is a annoyingly hard read😂) and then read Nietzsche's "On truth and lies in an extra-moral sense". But I'm a bit biased towards Nietzsche😅 I absolutely love his work!

I listened to this review at least a few times while working on my screen. You covered it so well! I would have never considered reading this book if it were not for your persuasive eloquence with your articulation. You have a way of manifesting the emotions and bringing them to the surface, contained within their context. There is no way to escape them except to surreally experience them. How you introduced what the author means by "Enter Ghost" hit me. And mind you, so aptly timed. Thanks, Polina! Don't stop.

really confusing analysis here - i feel as though you're extrapolating a lot from the poem i.e the wife seems to have been dead the whole time, i don't get why you're so convinced the hireling might've had an affair with her. just giving a bit of advice as some a level students watching may be getting the wrong idea about the poem from you
