Sorry folks, but Patinkin's voice is annoying as hell. Great low range but when he goes high the sound comes right from his nose. Bad vocal habits are hard to break. Therefore, he sucks!

Wonderful performance , where towers are there was always nature before & trees are much more beautiful than many horrible towers that replace them -even if one can find beauty in many things

The original and still the best. Watching this again after many years a few things are apparent: what a stiff Mandy was. I’d noticed before how he often just stood there and sang but I always enjoyed his voice so much I didn’t notice how dead he could be, how emotionally disconnected. Strange for a performer who started his career/fame as a fiery revolutionary (Che). But Bernadette. Bernadette… amazing. SO connected and true. And tho there is a rasp to her voice here and there (she occasionally had vocal troubles) she sings so true and emotionally that it can make me cry just to hear her… And then there are the music and lyrics: I believe this show is a masterpiece and one of the very few shows/plays to address accurately what it means to be an artist and the ensuing struggles it brings. Just unbelievably good.

Lesson #8. I can't help but feel this song on so many levels. It's more than just about an artist who feels he has not made his mark. It's how many people feel in mid-life, wondering if your best years are behind you, wondering if you die and you're gone and there's just nothingness and nothing left of you. And a bit of missing the magical sparkle of youth "just like the people out strolling on Sunday." It's easy to miss this song but it really is centrally important to the meaning of the entire musical.

I've listened to the original cast album for over three decades and also seen the show multiple times. It gets more profound with every passing year. I've always considered Follies my favorite Sondheim musical, followed closely by Into the Woods… Yet I think this show is the one that resonates the most with me. I saw the recent Pasadena Playhouse production twice, and both times I had to hold back tears during the entire last 15 minutes of the show. This one just gets to me.

Reading James Lapine's book about the making of the show Barbara Bryne was one of the only cast members who always got along with Mandy - she describes him as "very sweet" and he'd always tell people 'my mother sings like a bird.' But then, she was also one of the only cast members who was always able to stand up to Mandy when he tried to direct, and she'd say "I'm going to do this scene MY way."

“I am unfinished i am diminished with or without you.” Experiencing this with a man who was my George. I know it’s right for us to be apart but I still feel unfinished without him.

If you read James Lapine's book on the making of this musical you'll hear how vital Lesson #8 turned out to be - it was one of the last songs written, while the show was still in previews, and before they added it the audience didn't get the last scene at all. Every one of the original cast noticed the different vibe, before when Dot came on they didn't understand what she was doing there, and after the song was added it became obvious George had summoned her. Even Mandy Patinkin admits he didn't really get George's character arc until he had that song to sing.

One of the problems Sondheim often faced with shows like this, "Into the Woods" and "Pacific Overtures" is that the first acts are SO good that it's hard to come up with a second act at all.

are there any interviews with Barbara Byrne? I find her to be an amazing performer, and she brings such life to the supporting roles in both Sunday in the Park With George and Into the Woods - I would love to see more of her work and also just hear about her experiences being part of to iconic productions. This number is, no pun intended, beautiful.
