Our dear Barbara Bryne just passed away 2 days ago. Her friends and fans who adored her and cheered her roles at the Guthrie for many years are heartbroken. She was amazing!

Man this is a gorgeous piece. Barbara and Mandy knock this out of the park and yet it remains such a simple and poignant message. Thanks for the upload!

Reading James Lapine's book about the making of the show Barbara Bryne was one of the only cast members who always got along with Mandy - she describes him as "very sweet" and he'd always tell people 'my mother sings like a bird.' But then, she was also one of the only cast members who was always able to stand up to Mandy when he tried to direct, and she'd say "I'm going to do this scene MY way."

When Mandy's voice gets soft and quiet "look....looook!", I lose it. What a fantastic piece of music and performance.

If you want an incredible moment listen to “children an art” immediately after this. The two are identical moments in each act and go together like bookends.

Yes!! I love listening like this! I also like to do "We Do Not Belong Together " to "Move On" for a similar effect!

@@edmundarthur1851 You can also do the same with "Finishing the Hat" and "Putting it Together" as both the melodies of those titles are nearly the EXACT same with an added note in "Putting it Together"!

I've never listened or watched this without crying. When I saw this in its west end revival I'd never even heard of it I remember to this day... 'quick! draw it all! georgie!' the actual bust of emotion I felt was just unbelievable. Truely magical as always sondheim

are there any interviews with Barbara Byrne? I find her to be an amazing performer, and she brings such life to the supporting roles in both Sunday in the Park With George and Into the Woods - I would love to see more of her work and also just hear about her experiences being part of to iconic productions. This number is, no pun intended, beautiful.

Read James Lapine's book 'Putting it Together' about the making of this show - he interviews all the original cast and crew, including her from her retirement home. She's as sharp as ever and her memories of this show are crystal clear.

I've listened to the original cast album for over three decades and also seen the show multiple times. It gets more profound with every passing year. I've always considered Follies my favorite Sondheim musical, followed closely by Into the Woods… Yet I think this show is the one that resonates the most with me. I saw the recent Pasadena Playhouse production twice, and both times I had to hold back tears during the entire last 15 minutes of the show. This one just gets to me.

K but the way this connects to all the “towers” and the one “perfect tree” in the second act is incredible.

Wonderful performance , where towers are there was always nature before & trees are much more beautiful than many horrible towers that replace them -even if one can find beauty in many things

A friend of mine says that this is his favorite song. I know my way around theatre and music from it, but I've listened a few times and with everything else Sondheim (and others) have written, am still stumped. If anyone can show me how it would merit 'favorite song' status, I welcome your help.

It’s his favorite. That doesn’t mean it’s the best song of all time. Just because you don’t know the emotions and memories he has associated with it doesn’t make it unworthy of being his favorite song. I’m sure Defying Gravity is plenty of people’s favorite song. I can’t stand it, but they’re completely entitled to their love of it, and neither is right or wrong.

It's one of my favorites as well. So many observations in the lyrics: pretty isn't beautiful, pretty is what changes; what the eye arranges is what is beautiful; all trees, all towers beautiful; I'm changing, you're changing, I'll draw up now before we fade; you watch while I revise the world. The idea that the simple things around you are to be treasured and will not be around forever. That field you played in as a child may soon become a parking lot.

Go and see the show. Or watch it in its entirety. Its also my favorite song. A favourite song of a person is very personal it could be for any reason why are ur feathers all ruffled.
