@@mcduckuk yes - the bits of the mechanism behind the fabric are minimal and I don’t think it would get in your way much. You’ll be able to reach the wall easily at both head and foot.

Do you use any other system with continuous recording, for when you are driving that covers you in case of an accident?....Im looking for a decent dashcam/cctv system with external multiply cameras to cover me when im on the move...nice upload by the way

Thanks :) I tend to use my Insta360 camera mounted just below my reverse camera/mirror screen. If I set this to loop record, then I can save anything I want to keep. It's not a true dashcam though and doesn't lock a recording automatically if there's a crash. I did see someone with a full 360-degree external camera setup recently though. That looked quite impressive (but quite expensive). It allows you to see down the sides or a top view of your van and its surroundings while driving along. Might be worth checking out something like that.

When you record to a memory stick, does it automatically record over the oldest footage when stick is full (like dash cams) or do you need to manually clear all old footage before it records new ? Thank you

I believe it will overwrite as you've guessed. However, I suspect I perhaps haven't yet filled my memory stick up yet, so I can't say for absolute certain!

Hello There, I have the same issue with the Dometic fridge in our Bailey Caravan. Can you tell me if you needed a replacement handle or just the lock part? Also, Was it difficult to change the new lock? I am guessing that I need to take off the fridge door side bits and front panel to get to the handle? Just wondering if I would need a replacement handle too? Thanks in advance, Jeff

Hi Jeff. No, the handle bit was fine in my case. If you look at it closely, it's 2 pieces of silver/chrome that you separate to release the plastic end from the latch. In my case (and probably yours), it's the plastic end of the latch that had snapped off the latch. Therefore, pulling the handle didn't pull the latch anymore. Yes, from memory, you'll need to remove the side edge strips, the front facing panel and the handle itself. Then, you'll most likely need a socket set to undo the nut that holds the latch barrel into the door. I hope this helps. It's been about 3 years since I replaced mine. I think it's actually the first thing that went wrong with my van so I may be a bit rusty on the memory of the process, but I *think* I remember the basic process! Ed.

Hi I have just within the last hour taken my broken door latch out. I took the door off to remove side strips and metal looking cosmetic cover. I don't think this is all necessary My fault was as 'My Swift Escape' says the handle is just floating at the latch end as plastic end of the latch has broken at the handle. If handle is ok then you need to carefully pry the outer part from the inner part of the handle, its in two half's (you can see the join, i used a couple thin screwdrivers to carefully part). I think it would be better to start at the opposite end of the handle from latch as this end hooks the inner part of the handle and work from underneath so if you do damage the plastic of the handle you cannot see it(the handle is £70 for 2 pieces of plastic). Once the outer half of handle is off you will have a bit more room to access the nut retaining the latch.. Next you need to remove plastic cover that surrounds the handle to get access to the retaining nut of the latch, BEFORE you pry this off you need to remove the vertical strip on the latch side of the door(the cover is partly retained by this and in my case i could then see that the cover was also partly glued). To get the nut off i used a pair of long nose pliers(note the latch has key ways so don't attempt unscrew by holding the nut and rotating the latch from the inside) That's as far as I have got and hoping it will be just the reverse of this when putting back together. I am sure there are better ways of doing it, but worked for me. Hope this helps good luck

Just as a follow on to this information. I have managed to successfully install a replacement lock barrel which I purchsed from Sparestorepair for £70 rather than the £113 it costs froim the official Bailey suppliers. It took me 20 mins and was indeed just as described below by @T68450. the hardest part was carefully prizing of the small handle cover which then allowed me to separate the handle and remove it to give me access to the captive nut which was holding the lock in place. this was easily removed using a socket set and once the new lock part was inserted, It was simply a reverse of these procedures and the fridge door now opens and closes as it should. Thanks for all of the info on this link as this was all very helpful. I have even managed to salvage the broken part of the plastic catch and super glued it back on which I will keep as a spare. It does seem quite a fragile part and really should be made of metal but anyway, I hope this helps if anyone else has a similar issue. Jeff

@@jeffmitchell1057 Hi Jeff, I am actually having trouble trying to get the new catch into the handle,( not much play) did you fit the new complete lock barrel as one part or did you need to separate elements? Update: managed to get more play by dremeling out the part of the side and pushing catch all the way in to get enough pivot to clear handle front edge, also as I dismantled the latch, I decided to cut the spring in half. I think it is too strong and putting unnecessary pressure on the plastic end, as a by product the door opens without the need to keep pressure on the fridge door when opening. Would still be interested if there was an easier way to get the catch into the handle for the benefit of others. I used a different supplier than the one you found, but it did not look any different than the old one. Thanks Graham

Hi love the info on the blink, just one thing regarding the sync module, does it need power 247 if so does that mean I need my power on in Motorhome 24 7. Just worried that would run my battery down. Would it be possible to show where you have your plugged in & how you have power for it, with out your battery going flat. Hope you understand my woffling 😊.

Great question! It depends on how you want to use it. If you want the CCTV monitoring 24/7 then yes you would need it powered constantly. However, if you also have a Blink subscription, then I guess it would potentially record to the cloud regardless of whether the sync module was powered up. That said, you would still need a WiFi router on 24/7 for the cameras to connect to the cloud. I think there would be enough power from a roof mounted solar panel to keep this running if you have one fitted. For me, I just arm the cameras when I feel I need them. Therefore, they’re not consuming much power from their batteries when I don’t need them, and the sync module is not required to be on. I have an Ecoflow power unit which has USB sockets and I use one of these to power my sync module, but you could power it from a cigarette lighter plug with a USB adapter in it. In summary, mine is available 24/7 because I have enough power to do that, but it’s not essential and you could just connect it when you want it. I hope my waffling makes sense 😂👍🏻

Great video and thank you for sharing this with us. I have a 2018 Swift Escape 604 Champagne with only 6k miles. It has the blue motorised valves, waste and fresh water. They have both failed, waste in the open position and the fresh in the closed position. The only way of manually operating them is via a tiny little valve on top of the motorised valve. This ridiculous little valve is the size of a 5p coin and almost impossible to operate. Mine just spins and does nothing. Anyway I’ll take a look at these sensors to see if they can help. Unfortunately it looks like the valves are seized up. Someone else commented that he has the same problem so he contacted the valves manufacturer and they confirmed that these valves are not designed for exterior use, I.e. at the bottom of a Motorhome so god knows why Swift uses them!

I've noticed a newer version had some thermal packaging around the drain valves. I may do something like this when I change mine. Both of mine were seized, too - I'm currently using pliers to turn the valve after I removed the blue motorised blocks.

@@ASwiftEscape thanks for your reply. Unfortunately the problem is nothing to do with frost it’s all to do with corrosion within the dump valve gears. Unfortunately as it’s a sealed unit it’s impossible to open it up to lubricate it with WD40. I have managed to open up the ball valve and I’m fitting a manual ball valve with a hand lever and I will dump the waste and fresh water manually. According to the valve manufacturer these motorised dump valves are not designed for fitting under a motorhome in all the elements. It’s worth mentioning that you can find these aftermarket dump valves on either eBay or Amazon for £20 so no need to pay silly money for the same ones as supplied by Swift.

Good and sensible modifications you have. A van can never have too much stored energy ( batteries ) or items such as solar generators ( either solar panels or battery boxes such as the eco flow. A solar panel ( either foldable or flexible ) can always be taken with you if needed for extended off grid trips. I recently bought a dokio 100w flexible from eBay that had a 20% off offer code. Can simply place on the windscreen and use the wiper blades to secure it tho il probably put heavy duty suckers to it. I would never rely on the alternator and split charger after all it only works when the engine is running and they're not very efficient anyway. Adding all that extra wiring is ok if it works for you and maybe appreciated by the next user but will almost certainly devalue a van if/when it comes to trade in time. ( Especially if not done by an approved and registered professional. Dealers and most private buyers want a van that's been untouched by the previous owner. I understand that owners want/need their van to work as they want it to.

I agree with most of this. My spare/flexible panel is also a Dokio. However, trying to replace this much power with such a small panel is not going to cut the mustard. That’s why I went for this inverter option for charging while driving. I also share your feelings about wiring modifications and how this affects it at resale. That’s why, whenever I install anything, I’m always thinking about how easy it would be to return it to standard. So far, nothing is spliced into the original cabling - it’s all added as either a replacement connector, or bolted directly to the battery terminals - therefore, easy to remove without any trace or damage. 👍🏻

We have a 2018 Swift Escape 604 Champagne Special Edition. Our bed is almost impossible to lift by one’s self. My wife lifts standing behind the driver’s door and I stand on the opposite side pressing the release button. Also the safety straps are 150mm short and even without the bedding and the ladder the bed will not raise high enough to attach the safety straps. Therefore we travel without them. I have thought of making a similar modification that you have made, but why on earth should I have to as they should be correctly sized to include all bedding, pillows and ladder, because the bed is designed to be left made up at all times. Unfortunately we also have a leaking shower tap which has never been used and it’s impossible to fix due to an awful and faulty design. You can not remove the ceramic cartridge from the tap and you can not remove the tap because it’s impossible to remove the plastic screen it’s fixed to. The vehicle only has 6,000 miles on the clock and I’m extremely disappointed with these awful designs. Everything else about this Motorhome is okay apart from the clean water and waste water motorised emptying valves not working, .e. the waste is stuck open and the clean water is stuck in the closed position!

Sorry to hear your list of issues, there. I sense your frustration! However, everything you’ve listed can be resolved. I have the same issues with my drain down valves. I’m soon going to fit some replacements, but for the past 18 months I’ve used a pair of pliers to turn the valves manually. Those solenoid blocks sitting on top of the drain down valves can be removed. They simply turn a brass valve and you can do that yourself with pliers. I’ve seen detailed descriptions of how other owners have replaced one or both of the gas struts in the bed, and lots of people have replaced taps and/or cartridges as they tend to split if they freeze with water in them. @@ASwiftEscapethank you for your reply. Yes I realise that I can fix the bed and the drain valves with a little effort. However the shower tap can not be taken apart to replace the ceramic cartridge as per most other taps. This tap has a recessed black plastic nut underneath the chrome top. Therefore you have to remove the complete tap, but it’s pretty much impossible to remove the back screen that it’s attached to. I have been in touch with Swift technical support department asking for a KZbin link to show how to remove it, but they can’t help 🤷♂️ Absolutely useless company to do business with!!! Lots of other Swift owners writing comments about this same issue.

Great video Ed - I didn't even know I had a spare 240v socked behind the pax seat. ! Not sure I'm ready to implement the full setup you have but might try to split out the feed from the socket so I can switch it in and out of the power pack when off grid manually. My power pack (Bluetti AC200) can be charged directly from 12v - (doesn't need an inverter) but takes hours to top the pack up

Thanks Andy. The Ecoflow will also charge from 12v. However, like you said, it takes many hours to get anything meaningful back in as it’s limited to something like 8A of current. The whole reason for the inverter is so that I can charge it from a mains input. I’ve had to throttle the settings on the Ecoflow so that it only charges at 900W (the inverter is rated at 1000W), but I can charge it from flat to 100% in maybe 3 or 4 hours of driving. Normally it’s not flat, so even a short-ish trip will bring it back to 100%. I decided not to go for a higher rated inverter as the 12V cables to it would need to be massive. This is a good balance, I think.

I like the idea of using door cameras as they are not as bulky, but can you see along the side of the van, if someone approached from the front and tried to tamper with the Hab door, or cab doors.

Yes, you can see the side of the van. You could always add more cameras if you felt you wanted to get a better view at the cab end, but you would see the person from the where I put the cameras.

They’ve been much better than I had feared, to be honest. I’ve not really had issues with dirt and the doorbell design has a smooth surface rather than the camera lens being down inside a hole. It’s easy to wipe your thumb across it if it ever gets dirty. From a fixing perspective, I’m more concerned about how difficult they might be to remove! I really don’t think they’re going to fall off any time soon! 😂

@@ASwiftEscape Have you had your for long? I just thought I’d throw this out there. Ours has been absolutely brilliant re: one thing. You may have sorted this issue but we had rain water pouring on our engine once it rained and we had bad electrical issues. A easy way of trying this is open your bonnet and slowly with a hose pipe put water on your window screen. The scuttle leaked on ours also there is a drain pipe that runs from the centre of the scuttle across the engine that leaks. Apart from water on your engine the water goes on your injectors. I just sealed everything with black ct1 Hope this helps and happy travels

Hi, Great videos, much prefer the "user" reviews and advice to the experts that are actually ads for the manufacturers. We moved to a PVC (Autosleepers fairford Plus) after an unbearably noisy swift compact. Driving the PVC is a joy after the noise of the Motorhome but miss the space and are about to sign for a 2024 Swift escape 640 - how do you find the driving and the habitation noise ? - I know it will be noisier - but is it as bad as I remember ? - The Scottish highland roads almost drove us insane - I'm hoping things will have improved from the terrible cab creaks, the squeaks and crashes from the potholes - much rather hear opinions from real owners than the sales how is your experience of driving you escape ? - keep up the videos - great practical advice

Thank you! In all honesty, I was surprised at how much it crashed about compared to my previous VW T5 campervan. However, I changed the tyres to BF Goodrich off road ones so I can now run at a lower air pressure. That’s made a massive difference - much nicer to drive now.

Thanks very much for this, good to know what the sensor should look like on your vehicle. On ours the sensor beeps at us in thé middle of the night whenever we use a tap and that the system beeps is not configurable. Do motorhome makers ever actually use their vehicles? I like the levellers umbrella tip. I think you should use axle stands in addition as otherwise your life depends on those bits of plastic.

Any idea on battery usage for the doorbells? I am in the middle of installing mine when I came across your video. Also if you activate another camera now, you will get another trail period for all your devices.

I’ll have to come back to you on that one. Last time I used them, they worked, but I’ve had everything disconnected recently. Interesting point about the trial on new devices although I’m not sure on the benefits once you’ve got the USB stick working.

So, just to update - I reconnected everything a few days ago and it’s all still working just fine. So, the door bells have been sat there with the same battery for about 7 months now. I’m happy with that :)

We've had safety straps fitted but I assumed they were permanently fixed to the bed - the fitter didn't tell us to remove/attach them. Will have a check tomorrow

I wonder if you’re referring to the original straps behind the canvas? That’s part of the bed. Safety straps were added later and, without removing them, you’d not be able to lower the bed to use it.

Hello, great videos thanks, we’ve just purchased a Swift Escape 694 (2018) via a dealership, took it for a test drive a few days ago and noticed the radio reception was very poor, tried FM and DAB but couldn’t get any channels, dealer said to try resetting it back to factory settings but after doing a bit of research it seems it’s a common fault with the Fiat Ducato / Swift motorhome, just wondered whether you or anyone else have experienced this problem and what was the fix , thanks

I think this might depend on where you are at the time. I find the DAB reception to be pretty poor quite often. FM has it's moments, too - but it's usually ok. It's likely to be a Fiat issue rather than a Swift issue. If you're receiving anything at all, then I'd guess the antenna is connected. It's not the best reception, but maybe take it for a longer trip and see if the issue is more about where you are right now. Other people may have more experience though and may comment here. Glad it helped. My advice would be to not drink directly from the water tank though - I carry a couple of bottles of fresh water. It’s fine if it’s boiled, but I wouldn’t drink it fresh from the water system. ;-)

Well, on the surface of it, it would make sense. However, given that the fresh water drain outlet is exposed to road grime and everything else, I don’t really consider it to be clean.

A neighbour of mine in Spain had a gorgeous camper that he had upgraded for Solar Panels and a better AC unit. It was brilliant for three days until he went under a bridge and forgot about the added height, which ripped a huge sunroof into the top!

I use a silicone spray on my toilets moving parts. It’s about a quid a tin from home and bargain… you can use a silicone grease or petroleum jelly on the seals

I've noticed the float sticks in the up position on mine quite often also, I have to open the trap door and make sure it's moving freely 👍

Interesting- are you able to see the pivot point? Maybe worth trying to get some lubrication on to it, perhaps?

@ASwiftEscape Sort of, if it's stuck up I flick it down with a long screwdriver, I think it's had some toilet paper wrapped around it. Will need a proper clean but for now sunbathing takes priority 😀

Hello again Tim/Ed, Thank you for the reply. I do have the button like yours. It is the same type of bed. I too am concerned with the safety straps being screwed into the wood side wall as I am unsure it will take the weight of the bed. I have search all over, and have not found another fitted like mine. It would appear that I have your story mixed up with another chap who has the same issues we have. I do have the button you speak of, and the bed is the same. However this should interest you as the following is a extract of the other chaps story. He had called Swift on a lot of occasions, had work done to fit the transit straps. It was not done to his satisfaction, so he called the back. The next text is his it starts mid sentence. Although he is talking about "alignment, he is talking about the fitting of the straps. Quote. "he was concerned that he had done something wrong, so much so he called me later that night and said they would come back this morning to double check. Well they both came back this morning and could see the cupboards were misaligned, they checked their work and measured the position of the last ratchet and checked it using masking tape to see if the catch broke the tape showing it had engaged, it had, so they confirmed that it could not possibly go any higher than it did and the ratchet mechanism was out of line" That is the ratchet I meant when I asked you about it in my message, however it was on another forum that I found it. Nevertheless it could have some bearing on us being able to drop the bed by repositioning, or redrilling a location hole in the proverbial ratchet. If we/I can locate it. I cannot ask the other person as he is no longer posting. Just a thought. I do not do KZbin, but is it alright to do this on here or should it be by email. Please let me know what you think. Interesting. Are we talking about making the bed sit lower when it's in use? If so, let's say that you figure out how to adjust the top and bottom positions on that cable so that the top is lower, and the bottom is lower. I can see a few problems you'd need to overcome. Firstly, the top position could then be low enough for you to bump your head on the bed when walking underneath it. Secondly, the vertical wall rails will need to be mounted lower on the wall otherwise the mechanism will hit the bottom bung of the wall rail before the bed drops to the bottom position. Third, the seat belt webbing will need to be longer to accommodate a bigger drop. Obviously, the ladder won't fit when it's down further, either. Is this what you're thinking of doing?

Hi, No. I am going to look at the "ratchet" whatever that is. I have a garage in which I keep my motorhome. I will be going to it this week, and I will strip the bed and try to locate the ratchet device to see if it can be altered. I do not want to go to the lengths you describe. That would be far too involved. If you note in my previous mail, the engineer talking to the chap who also has the problem you will see the engineer says "he put a piece of masking tape over the holes in the ratchet to see if the locating pins engage the top locking point. He checked, and the pins punctured the tape . The conclusion was the bed was at its maximum height. Therefore if we can find the hole that the engineer put the tape over, and work out if a new hole could be made to set the bed between the top position we have now, and the next position down (the one you would bang your head on) we could have a position between the two. Obviously it may not be possible, but I will try this week if I get the time. Regards, Trevor.
