Any idea what HRC you're getting out if it? People crap on the lower carbon steels but really, you don't want more than .7% carbon because the undissolved carbides aren't much harder than hardened steel, plus you lose toughness even without them if you do dissolve them over .6% or so in the steel. Tough and hard is the name of the game for good steel. 12c27m used in a lot of bushcraft knives is only .5% carbon, and then there's Buck's 420HC.

I just pound the handle down into the head until its ridiculously tight and almost shaving pieces of the wood off at the top, then I hammer a short roofer's nail down into the top to act like a wedge.

This definitely works. I have done this with a Cs trail hawk, and really given it a hard time. And it has never moved! Thanks for the advice!

How do use a tiny piece of leather just slide it in right before you tap the head on that makes it so it doesn’t slip and when I throw it, it usually doesn’t pop off

I've owned one of your Shepherds axes for 6 years. I live on a hillside Redwood tract in Fieldbrook Ca. It's used whenever I check my property and sometimes I chop down invasive plants or poison oak on trails. It's holding up really well, even when I forgot where I leaned it once and it spent weeks in the rain and weather before I located it. Best walking stick I've ever seen for woodland use. I used to walk my dog at night in Colorado in winter and started using a walking stick for snow/ice with an long wooden ice axe and when I moved to Fieldbrook I bought one of your Shepherds axes. It's as well made as the 100+ year old antique ice axe from Europe I used in Colorado. Thanks for the heirloom quality axe.

Was that a homebuilding construction crew in the background audio at the 2:00' mark? Your foraging and processing with the tomahawk was just great - how you kept eyeballing the similar lengths for the fuel, kindling, and tinder at the start was necessary and uncommon content - KUDOS!
@wbf77732 жыл бұрын
I just listened to that spot in the video and it does sound that way, but it was actually my brother trying out his new axe on some other dead trees in the background. Thank you for bringing this to my attention though, I had no idea the audio was there.

One more thing, he never cuts at 90°. There is no need to. A 90° cut was made by the saw. This is the way to cut wood. These were axes carried in the wilds because they were light. And easy to fix a new handle. Though these tools were treasured in the wilds, because it was needed everyday. Firewood was never 6" timber chopped to size. It was small branches gathered from dead trees. The hawk was the perfect tool.
@Scablands_Scavenger2 жыл бұрын
Very nice! I have never thought of something like that... looks like it would be really handy around camp. The point and spike might be handy for digging at the fire pit, run off trench, digging a mooring hole for a boat and general poke-a-stick at it stuff.
@wbf77732 жыл бұрын
I agree, it has been very handy for digging a fire hole and such. All around it has been a awesome hiking camping tool

Do you fit paper before oiling the handle? Or later? I tested fit on my old one and it really grabs. But have not treated new handle yet. The fit on this now is solid.
@GravityRoller2 жыл бұрын
I would be interested to read WBF777 reply to your question. I would 'think' the answer would be, it depends on user goal. Two examples of my thoughts as follows: Consider/remember, paper is a pulp product (aka wood). 1) If the goal is to secure the head to haft more permanently, before oiling as the oil absorbed into the wood would act as a release agent precluding the glue from sticking to the wood. Using the paper and adhesive as discussed (before oiling haft) would provide adhesive attachment of head to haft. 2) If the goal is to provide superior contact between head & haft, but still allow handle to be removed for various applications, pre-oiling haft could work as a release agent (mentioned above in 1) and the paper slip sheet impregnated with adhesive would function as a custom molded filled sheet that could function to fill unevenness in the eye and the haft. Upon removal of the head, the adhesive impregnated paper would stay attached to the wood haft.
