It was very easy to tell the difference (as you would expect). But also it didn’t seem like you were in any situations where you needed the low light performance of full frame. You seemed to want to shoot things that were further away - so minimizes the impact of having the big lens. In fact you would probably find that the situations you were in… you could have easily got by with the Canon 600 F11 (and I bet the images would look similar). Those big lenses are niche. Personally I would just grab a 200-600mm as it is going to be somewhere in-between the 2 but the benefit of having a zoom.

I love hand holding my lenses and now im 62 so weight led me to getting a OMD 1M Mark iii a few years ago with the 100 - 400 lens. Now I shoot with the OM Mark ii and the 300 F4, mostly for birds and have been enjoying. I also shoot a bit with my Canon R7 and the 100-500 and both perfect for me.

I totally agree with your conclusions regarding sharpness, bokeh, cost etc. I have the OM-1 m2 but use the 150-600 (I couldn't afford the 150-400) and I love it. Funny thing about the depth-of-field discussion... a lot of photographers say they want to include more "environmental" elements in their photos but the FF cameras provide such a "creamy" background that the "environmental" elements that are included are hardly recognizable. I prefer being able to see that a background tree is actually a blurred fir tree rather than a blurred green blob. Anyway, great video and looking forward to more!

Re: the foxes with the 40-150 + 2x, it's surprising that you were missing focus. I have used both the 1.4x and 2x with the (much lower-end) Olympus 100-400/5-6.3, and I would have gotten those shots. Maybe the OM-1 is just that much better than the E-M1 mk3, but that feels unlikely to me.

Unless I missed it, it would be nice to know the total weight of each lens/camera/ballhead/V plate as attached to your MSM. That would be a very helpful stat for others to compare their equipment to your chart. It looks like your top ballhead might be the Colorado Tripo Co Highline ballhead which is solid (I have one), but heavy. I bought two shirts today to support you and thank you for honoring Alyn.

The 40-150 is a great lens. But not for wildlife. I use the 300mm F4 when I have frame filling and don't need a lot of reframing. It's super sharp and bright. It's also quick to focus and follows subjects well with subject recognition. Like you guys, I need more reach and zoom for most subjects. But for most of us hobbyists (NOT Pros!) the 150-400 is too darn pricey. The new 150-600 mmm is a very good lens for a lot less pennies.

the rf600 was better. I don’t have either but the question was which was better and the 600 f4 was better. I don’t have either of them but do have a r5. My wildlife setup is the 400 f 2.8 tc from Nikon and that means you have packed up and gone and I can still shoot.

@@chasingluminance That would be wonderful. Also the phone mount for the "Southern hemisphere" kit seems to have an AS plate and designed to be mounted on the wedge without the tracker. The video on the MSM website (Nightscape images) implies it is good enough. I recall some of your other great videos which found a bit of drift after the cam was mounted. Would be nice to have a third party check. All very confusing to a tracking newbie trying to put a compact kit together. Thank you again for your inspiring and instructive videos.

nice tutorial! At 13:30 I dare say it was just running on lighten mode. It wasn't forming 'comets' at all. And then when you slid the slider just a SMIDGE down they nearly disappeared. So something odd was going on there. Even on the longest comet mode, they aren't that long.

I prefer the results from the full frame system in most instances. In some instances, the deeper field of depth was actually better. But geez... The full frame setup is unreasonably expensive unless this is your main gig day in, day out. The Micro Four Thirds system provides for a WHOLE LOT MORE bang for the buck. No contest. I own the OM1II and the 300mm and the 2x converter. Even when adding the 12-100 f4 to this, I can carry this up a snowy mountain with 4,000 elevation gain for a whole day and then shoot. Not possible with the full frame setup.

Great run through of the options, Alex. I’d full support the 6D as an entry move as the used prices are excellent and it’s such a simple, robust camera that feels bulletproof. Paired with the 14mm Samyang it’s a great way to start making images. 6Ds are still the workhorse of my nightscape outings and timelapses. They get abused, covered in dew, squished into impossible corners of my bag yet deliver every time - I love them.

Great to see some content again. I'll look forward to your upcoming videos. Yeah, your friend should get the 6D, if going with Canon. It won't have the AF capability that a mirrorless will have, but if he doesn't go nuts with extra lenses, he could pocket his savings and start building toward a mirrorless like a used R6 or R6ii (I've heard bad things about the R8 with overheating and having terrible battery performance, but I don't know from personal experience). Then, with the adapter, he can continue to use his EF lenses. At that point, he might even consider eventually sending his 6D in for astromodification, even for landscape astro - the southern hemisphere gives him some awesome targets for hydrogen alpha. An R7 would be another option if he eventually gets mirrorless, because it would give him that extra reach for wildlife, and I've seen some photographers using the speed booster adapters to give them near full frame composition when using a full frame lens. Instead of 1.6 zoom, you end up with 1.1 (I think). Not sure how well it works, but it's something to consider. The nice thing about mirrorless is than he wouldn't have to stay in the Canon ecosystem, because the EF lenses are adaptable to Sony and Nikon, if that's the way he wanted to go. So yeah, lots of options. If he starts out with 6D, he can build and go in a number of different ways, and continue to use the 6D. 12 years old and it's still rock solid.

I really appreciate your review of the tripod, which I am about to purchase. However, I tried the VA-5X Fluid Video Head (with a different Sirui tripod that is came with, the Sirui L-324F Landscape Carbon Fiber Tripod - a little big and bulky for me) and sent it back. The tilt is fluid but the pan is just ordinary, with no dampening, merely adjustable friction. I needed something for very slow panning, and this is NOT a true fluid head!
