Talk your talk, friendly competition is alright but at the end of the day rent is due so only the persistent ones who are always working will get work.

Every tip a winner! I am going to replay this video many times with my saxophone in my hands. I am reminded of a dance class I went to, after many years of dancing. The class was billed as "advanced" and was led by a top professional. I recognised many in the class, some professionals, many semi pro and others who were teachers and good amateur dancers. We waited with baited breath for the fairy dust to be sprinkled and the class leader said, "Right, let's get back to the basics." We were aghast! But as the class progressed (it was brilliant) we all came to realise that the basics are just that, the absolute foundation upon which everything else is built. If your foundation is flawed there will always be a limit to what you can achieve.

Western peeps don't realize how INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT it is for a non-Japanese to get studio work in Japan. Congrats!

Did you record this in Japan at a studio or remotely and then sent them the track?

The skats that Ella sang, the same thing. She's singing what a horn's part would do.

But playing like that would have to be recorded, otherwise that adlib would change everytime. How would you know what you played?

Why not do both? They aren't mutually exclusive. Skills gained from developing your artistry help with musicianship and vice-versa. Plenty of great artists are also great musicians and even great teachers. It's not a two-sided thing. You can easily have your own gigs with your own music and still play other people's music on other gigs. Also, something important that wasn't really discussed here is that there are many times when people will call you because they want your sound, not necessarily just because you can play the part. A million people can play the part. That is a perfect example of artistry mixing with musicianship. People should be encouraged to develop their artistry and to also develop their musicianship. You need both! If it was just about playing the part, you could just get a robot to do it. But would that really feel like music?

Great video and advice. I always believed the best soloists have the impeccable rhythm and used their instruments as a percussion instrument. Trane was so rhythmic, he was like cat always landing on his foot. Pat you do the samething!

Jazz and pop have a common root - Louis Armstrong. Laufey grew up listening to Connee Boswell, Ella et al, disciples of Pops. She’s internalized their approach. She reminds me of Jo Stafford in many ways. It’s a gift to have a gen Z singer as good as Stafford, that’s for sure. Pop does need saving. There’s a dozen women with five octave ranges who use the same few pop-gospel licks over and over again. It worked for Aretha, but it’s cliche now. The songs and arrangements are third rate, they really don’t matter. It’s “I’m all that” over and over again. This crap started with Sinatra, ironically. Laufey shows us that great arrangements and thoughtful phrasing still matters.

I made principal of the All-state (NY) orchestra when I was a freshman because I scored 100 pts. at NYSSMA in eighth grade playing a concerto. It was evidently a big deal back then. There were seniors coming in to listen that were going out of their minds (not in a good way). Later, I was a scholarship student at Juilliard for six years. I haven't made a DIME from music and all doors have been closed for decades and my face has been pushed into the mud many times. Everyone's path is different and there are so many variables that we cannot control. All we can do is focus on the ones that we can control.

Many musicians approximate pulse and rhythm rather than actually generating them. It can be quite exhausting to generate them properly, especially for a long duration.
