I tried to find out but couldn’t work it out. Not near where they were at th time is it! My only guess would be maybe the one near Mucking which you pass on the C2C after leaving Stanford le Hope

Great video about a spectacular but horrifying tragedy. One small point, sight of Princess Alice’s red (port side) light implies that she was on Bywell Castle’s port side and intending to pass correctly - port side to port side. Starboard is to the right. If she was passing along BC’s starboard side she would have been contravening established practice and would have shown a green (starboardside) light, the vessels travelling in opposite directions. The apparent decision aboard PA to change to the north side put her across BC’s bows, the manoeuvre revealing her red light.

Nice video, mate. I grew up in East Ham in the 70's and 80's, and we spent a great deal of time exploring the Beckton Gas Works; it really was an adventure. I visited the site before and after they filmed Full Metal Jacket there, and I remember seeing the dead palm trees there when I returned in 1987 or early 1988. According to Wikipedia, they imported 120 palm trees and many thousands of plastic tropical plants to convert this derelict gas works in East London into the city of Hu'e. Although the area needed to be developed, it is a shame little remains of the Beckton Gas Works, which had been the largest of its kind anywhere in the world, which once employed around 4,500 people. Did you also know that the scenes set at United States Recruit Depot, Paris Island, were also set in England at an old RAF Barracks called Bassingbourne Barracks. Love the video, mate. Best wishes, Rich

Mrs Richards: "I paid for a room with a view !" Basil: (pointing to the lovely view) "That is Torquay, Madam ." Mrs Richards: "It's not good enough!" Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window ? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..." Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!" Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky." Mrs Richards: "I'm not satisfied. But I shall stay. But I expect a reduction." Basil: "Why?! Because Krakatoa's not erupting at the moment ?"

I worked at the British gas site many years ago when they had two gas turbine gas compressors. At the time part of the film set remained & I was asked if I want a tour around. At the time I had not seen the film & declined. Idiot. Undoubtedly the best film of all time I have, the original script & a number signed posters.

This once fine building has been dropped by Whetherspoons, and with a huge gaping hole now in the roof for a month or so and Thurrock Council virtually bankrupt and supposedly doing nothing, this place is advancing into something altogether near impossible to rescue. The organ console and possibly some of it's recovered pipes are thankfully in safe hands and now in storage. I used to frequent this place when it enjoyed a revival in the 80's with the great manager, Roy Roberts and superb projectionist, David Stickland who knew how to do presentation before a film with music on-cue, lighting sequencing on-stage and the multiple curtains opening, one after the other, plus of course, Alan Newman, ex- BBC World Service announcer who came in to play the organ there in superb style. Then there were the volunteers who helped restore and maintain the place in those final years. What a crime that no-one in this town on the Council ever bothered to rescue this from all the lousy operations who successively purchased this building, promising everything yet doing absolutely nothing. Only Essex businessman, Terry Holdings had the courtesy to give the place one last chance in it's final years of operation from the late 80's as a cinema and then as Charlestons for his son-in-law, Bob Beardwell. Genuine folk without any BS.

The welcome is a very decent place and streets ahead of the poorly run Hazlewood opposite, the manager i think was John who I complained twice to and he was incredibly rude when we asked for cleaner linen and assistance in what was a very dirty chalet back in August 2019, do they clean? Nope ! A contrasting experience opposite, as i liked Dawlish Warren, i wanted to return only last July and my family had a great time at the Welcome with enough activities to keep them occupied throughout. Thank you !!! I will be back again in 2023.

I am 63 now, being going to Dawlish Warren since we were in our 20's. Love it there. Went to the Welcome site loads if times when our son was small, but changed to Hazelwood when he grew up, it's directly across the road and a fraction of the cost and quieter, which is nice for me, the wife and the dog.

I'm glad you and your family enjoyed your time down here . I live up by Exeter and Dawlish , Dawlish warren and Exmouth seafronts are my favourites . There's many places to go . Dawlish town is famous for its black swans . It has a lovely scenic river .lots of waterfall and wild life and you will see some fish to . All kind of birds as well. The fish chips is good at Dawlish . At the moment there's seawall work being done by network rail but normally the beach is nice . If you go under the bridge and turn right walk around to Coryton cove ,it nice there to . Starcross has water taxis over to and from Exmouth and ferries so you can have a small boat trip if you like over to the other side . Nothing else in starcross though it's a normal village really . When your at Dawlish warren the warren is like a peninsula in the estuary and so there a beach on the back looking up river . I doubt there are pet restrictions there but obviously once the sand runs out being N estuary it's mud. Do not walk on it . Down the coast a bit further is Paignton , easily accessible by train . Car can be pain when it's busy . Paignton has a pier . Tbh it's just a expensive arcade but the beach itself it absolutely beautiful sand. Paignton has a main Street which is your usual holiday type place . Arcades gift shops etc . Don't venture beyond the train station away from the beach cos it's run down . If you like the Moors Dartmoor is easily accessible and about half hour away . Go via bovey tracy. If you like moorland river swimming go dow to the second ashburton exit of the A38 and go on through spitchwick . The area is also know as newbridge but do look it up on KZbin . Back to Dawlish . Instead of going in the big pay and display carpark you can sometime get free parking not far from the town centre but it is a treck to the beach . Enjoy Devon when you come back

Good point. There were survivors. Many died in the weeks after but I should have researched more about it
@lindafarnes486

Some survived the sinking, but died as a consequence of having been in the highly polluted waters of the Thames. Nicola White mudlarking covered this at some point in her episides. There is a memorial in one of the London cemetaries for the deceased. Old Woolwich Cemetary. There is also a rather good folk song written in recent times that describes the events. Rob Mitchell and Dave Rickard I think where their names.
