From the streets of LA to an abandoned cinema in Grays, Essex, UK. See where Eddie Valiant and Roger Rabbit hid out and what became of the fantastic cinema used in the hit 1988 movie

@UK Fatman if you'd like, you could come to Glasgow and do the filming locations for "unleashed" with Bob Hoskins, Jet Li and Morgan Freeman , among other movies made there , I'd be happy to help out and chip in too 👍

Great video! Lived in Grays as a kid and was obsessed with this building! I’m 30 now, so didn’t get to go in when it was open as a cinema. But was lucky to go in when I was 13 ish. Walking by and they were filming in there. A series on itv I think, called Jericho. Robert Lindsay was starring in it. I managed to talk the production team to let me in.. (I was very geeky they obviously felt sorry for me and showed me around) 😂 was a great experience. I remember it was so grand inside, but smelt old and very damp!

Thanks for taking the time to comment. I did see something about Jericho but couldn’t find a clip. Thanks again

My Mum wouldn’t let us sit in the stalls back in the 80’s as the chairs were all mouldy and damp, even back then! We queued down the block for tickets on opening night for Who Framed Roger Rabbit? as tickets were only £1 and it was reopening after being shut for quite some time- so it was a pretty big deal at the time. We didn’t like the movie and my brother was convinced he was sat in the same seat Bob Hoskins sat in 😆

So here’s something new. My son had a green sofa that was owned by Lou Hirsch who voiced the baby! That’s mad

This once fine building has been dropped by Whetherspoons, and with a huge gaping hole now in the roof for a month or so and Thurrock Council virtually bankrupt and supposedly doing nothing, this place is advancing into something altogether near impossible to rescue. The organ console and possibly some of it's recovered pipes are thankfully in safe hands and now in storage. I used to frequent this place when it enjoyed a revival in the 80's with the great manager, Roy Roberts and superb projectionist, David Stickland who knew how to do presentation before a film with music on-cue, lighting sequencing on-stage and the multiple curtains opening, one after the other, plus of course, Alan Newman, ex- BBC World Service announcer who came in to play the organ there in superb style. Then there were the volunteers who helped restore and maintain the place in those final years. What a crime that no-one in this town on the Council ever bothered to rescue this from all the lousy operations who successively purchased this building, promising everything yet doing absolutely nothing. Only Essex businessman, Terry Holdings had the courtesy to give the place one last chance in it's final years of operation from the late 80's as a cinema and then as Charlestons for his son-in-law, Bob Beardwell. Genuine folk without any BS.

Current state is totally trashed with holes in the roof.
