I don’t view CT as a Bootleg company anymore. I see them more as 3rd party in the lines of Demonical Fit with Dragonball Z. They’re just SO well done that calling them a bootleg almost seems like a disservice hahaha. Great review, look forward to getting mine tomorrow.

Firstly, eww. With that out of the way, 400+ is a lot of movies! I'm at probably around 80-100 but now have a 1-in-1-out policy. I have to ask myself if I'm ever really gonna watch that amount of content and do I need to be the custodian of it on that level? (no, not really) Once I got past a certain point I realized in many cases I'm buying them for the sake of it/out of habit and am now trying to whittle the collection down to the classic, essential and rewatchable, which I balance with a sort of "Now showing" section of 2-3 temporary items I'll re-donate once I've watched them.

Dvd continues to outsell blu ray and 4k so no, absolutely not dead. I have an enormous dvd collection and i cherish it. Charity shops are packed to the rafters with briliant films on dvd for 50p or 3 for a quid. Also, 4k is something of a fallacy in my opinion, it is a fractional improvement on blu ray and on many occasions 4k simply highlights a films flaws. For example, there is almost zero reason to buy a 16mm film on 4k.

@@popculturepedestal I have a good 4k set up and there is only minimal improvement over blu ray and that is only on some discs. Each to their own but it isnt worth upgrading from blu to 4k. I purchased the 4k second sight boxset of Texas Chainsaw and Martin and on both occasions the blu ray included in the set looked better than the 4k. By making the picture too sharp you pull in fuzz and noise which makes it look like you are watching the film through a snowstorm. Dvd and Blu is perfect for me with the odd 4k purchase on a very special occasion. I have a load of local charity shops, I could go to HMV and buy one 4k for £20 or wander round the charity shops and probably get 30 dvds/blus for the same price. I'd rather have 30 movies than 1!!

I've found a far easier way. I am ripping all my DVDs as MKVs and selling them on Vinted. I have a couple of thousand DVDs done so far on two hard drives I collected for nearly twenty five years but stopped collecting last year. I got to the point where I was spending money that I could afford to spend but would rather use the cash for other things and spending £25 or more on a collector's edition of a film I already own or would only watch once seemed pointless. I also had to have multiple bookcases and then trying to organise them so I could find them and also catalogue them took time I can easily watch something now. I still have a lot to do and now I have an external Blu-ray drive, I can rip some of the Blu-rays as well. I'm not losing any quality on the rips and I can run them through my mini PC connected to my receiver to get the surround audio I got to the point where I was spending money that I could afford to spend but would rather use the cash for other things and spending £25 or more on a collector's edition of a film I already own or would only watch once seemed pointless It does take time to copy the discs, and I do have to store them while I wait for them to sell, but the inconvenience is worth it

I have at least 500 movies/ TV shows on DVD. A few tears ago I thought my very favourite DVD film's I'd upgrade to Blu-ray as it wa deemed "better". I bought new films on Blu-ray and never thought anything of it. Then one day I found The green mile cheap so I grabbed it, as it was on one of the list, to uograde. That evening I dug out the DVD version and watched it on my 1080p 42" TV and it was just how I always remembered it looking. I watched a minute or so of the first few chapters for reference. I then went over to the Blu-ray ..... I was immediately disappointed, it was darker all over. Shadows were now almost black or black and the colour was horrible. The subtle hues had turned into an over saturated mess. I went to see what the interweb had to say and pretty much others were saying the same as i saw. A sometime later I got my grubby hands on a Blu-ray for Shawshank redemption. Sis the same as i did dor the green mile and it was peetty much the same ... Dark and oversaturated. In a nutshell I'm glad I compared as I realised it wasn't worth upgrading. That being said 4k disc's are a nice upgrade over a DVD. They don't have the oversaturated colours Blu-ray's do and they are not dark, but they are more suited to TVs bigger than say 50". If you have a smaller TV I think having a decent dvd player that can upscale is all you need

I'm a big fan of physical media. I've spent a small fortune on DVD's and CD's over the last 30 year's. Aound 2005-2012 friends and family were dumping their CD and DVD collections. I could never get bring myself to get rid of what I spent so much on. I was also miffed that I spent all this money and what I had to ro show for it was worthless. The next 10 or so year's friends and family would make comments about me being old skool or saying I should get a streaming subscription when we'd talk about movies or what we had been watching on TV. When they'd come round my house and look at my TV/film collection, their eyes would glaze over. I'd remind them you can watch it on subscription based TV although it won't be the same edit, if it's not been removed totally. I also think having something like this also says something about you (as long as you keep only the movies you really enjoy). A couple of friend over the last year have gotten back into getting physical media again. For anyone thinking about doing this is... It's a no brainer its so cheap right now it be foolish not to... The down side .... more recent films are hard to find cheap.

Nothing wrong with DVD's in 2024, they can be be bought very cheaply, most charity/thrift shops have large selections to choose from, you can still buy the higher end players that were very expensive at low prices and best of all they look great on a Plasma TV. I am not conviced that blu-rays are that much better, and 4K is just a con, how may new releases of back catalouge releases look any better on 4K, very few. True lies was a disaster. Just keep enjoying them as lomg as you can, the movies are the same on all formats, bar a few extra's and who ever bothers with them.

This is something I would never personally do but I think the result is great for saving space😉. You could even use a file cabinet style storage device and really separate your collection alphabetically with tabs just like filing documents🤩. I learned the hard way too about the DVD books. Darn hindsight lol🤣 I've thought of downsizing using slim cases before but again I didn't like the idea of trimming or folding the cover art so I opted against that. Main thing is you found a really economic and effective way of downsizing and organizing so you can upsize your collection!😁 My current collection is 1475 DVD's and Blu-rays mostly in original covers with almost 500 in DVD books and 164 VHS tapes. Even though we live in times where everything is faster and has higher resolution, the DVD is anything but a dead format. Of course, it is no longer comparable to today's standard with 4K UHD, but for the average film fan and collector it is still the most popular and affordable of all formats. You also have to keep in mind that not everyone who likes to collect films automatically has a home cinema with an OLED television and the corresponding sound system at home. The DVD was a huge hit, as this format conquered the world, the times were over when you had to rewind and never again had bad picture quality when watching multiple times, plus there was endless bonus material for your favorite films, that was a highlight that has somehow been forgotten nowadays, at least that's how it seems to me. I too like to have the standard Blu-ray as my all-time favorite for the collection, but otherwise the good old DVD is completely sufficient :)
