I miss dvds actually being packed with extras and like an animated selection screen and all that stuff. Now you only get that if there is a collectors edition or maybe MAYBE a boxset. Anyway we all know HDDVD was for real chads lol

I'm a big fan of physical media. I've spent a small fortune on DVD's and CD's over the last 30 year's. Aound 2005-2012 friends and family were dumping their CD and DVD collections. I could never get bring myself to get rid of what I spent so much on. I was also miffed that I spent all this money and what I had to ro show for it was worthless. The next 10 or so year's friends and family would make comments about me being old skool or saying I should get a streaming subscription when we'd talk about movies or what we had been watching on TV. When they'd come round my house and look at my TV/film collection, their eyes would glaze over. I'd remind them you can watch it on subscription based TV although it won't be the same edit, if it's not been removed totally. I also think having something like this also says something about you (as long as you keep only the movies you really enjoy). A couple of friend over the last year have gotten back into getting physical media again. For anyone thinking about doing this is... It's a no brainer its so cheap right now it be foolish not to... The down side .... more recent films are hard to find cheap.

I have over 400 movies and everyone is on standard Dvd.I've never understood this snobbish looking down on DVD's by some.Pulling a movie from my brain let's say The Italian Job, how many times in a 5 year period are you really going to watch it? So I think it makes more sense to pay £5 to £10 for a DVD copy, or even cheaper in a Charity shop than paying £30 upwards for a 4K release.Enjoyed video, and subbed.😁

Even though we live in times where everything is faster and has higher resolution, the DVD is anything but a dead format. Of course, it is no longer comparable to today's standard with 4K UHD, but for the average film fan and collector it is still the most popular and affordable of all formats. You also have to keep in mind that not everyone who likes to collect films automatically has a home cinema with an OLED television and the corresponding sound system at home. The DVD was a huge hit, as this format conquered the world, the times were over when you had to rewind and never again had bad picture quality when watching multiple times, plus there was endless bonus material for your favorite films, that was a highlight that has somehow been forgotten nowadays, at least that's how it seems to me. I too like to have the standard Blu-ray as my all-time favorite for the collection, but otherwise the good old DVD is completely sufficient :)

Nothing wrong with DVD's in 2024, they can be be bought very cheaply, most charity/thrift shops have large selections to choose from, you can still buy the higher end players that were very expensive at low prices and best of all they look great on a Plasma TV. I am not conviced that blu-rays are that much better, and 4K is just a con, how may new releases of back catalouge releases look any better on 4K, very few. True lies was a disaster. Just keep enjoying them as lomg as you can, the movies are the same on all formats, bar a few extra's and who ever bothers with them.

I have all my classic tv shows on dvd , series like the sweeny and minder along with many others all on dvd. Also movies I’m only going to watch once I buy on dvd, I don’t see the point of spending extra cash on something I’m going to watch once. I do own 4k but only a few select ones. I only collect films and tv shows I will watch more than once now as in the past I made the mistake of buying just to bulk out my collection as a lot of collectors seem to do and they end up just collecting dust on the shelf.

Simple answer is No. More people are going back to buy physical media, they are sick of streaming services with enforced adverts, limited choice/not the films or content they want, increased streaming service fees and other reasons, plus when they buy a dvd/bluray etc, they only have to pay once. Long Live DVD !

Dvd continues to outsell blu ray and 4k so no, absolutely not dead. I have an enormous dvd collection and i cherish it. Charity shops are packed to the rafters with briliant films on dvd for 50p or 3 for a quid. Also, 4k is something of a fallacy in my opinion, it is a fractional improvement on blu ray and on many occasions 4k simply highlights a films flaws. For example, there is almost zero reason to buy a 16mm film on 4k.
@popculturepedestal13 сағат бұрын

@@popculturepedestal I have a good 4k set up and there is only minimal improvement over blu ray and that is only on some discs. Each to their own but it isnt worth upgrading from blu to 4k. I purchased the 4k second sight boxset of Texas Chainsaw and Martin and on both occasions the blu ray included in the set looked better than the 4k. By making the picture too sharp you pull in fuzz and noise which makes it look like you are watching the film through a snowstorm. Dvd and Blu is perfect for me with the odd 4k purchase on a very special occasion. I have a load of local charity shops, I could go to HMV and buy one 4k for £20 or wander round the charity shops and probably get 30 dvds/blus for the same price. I'd rather have 30 movies than 1!!

As long as the picture is 720p it's good enough to watch. 720p is what I would call Standard picture. It does the Job as good quality picture even if it's a movie you really want. It doesn't actually need to be the highest level of quality. If it's a TV you have your always better to have at least Standard HD as alot of TV Channels are HD that's if your into TV. I don't think you can buy a Standard 720p TV. I think their at least HD.

The reason I still buy (certain) used dvds is because some include special features that for some reasons never made it to bluray. Also there's the dreaded different colour grading/mastering (infamous examples like modern music having a crazy blue or green tint. or over the top dnr that makes every person look like a wax figure).
