I love your videos. Thank you for making them. The intro tune is great. It reminds me of repertoire for 5-string clawhammer banjo due to the repeating treble note - on banjo, you use that 5th ‘drone’ string to reset your hand position, so I typically play it alternating with other notes.

Ireland doesn't have a king, but if it did and if I were him, I'd dump the national anthem they've got (it's okay, maybe 6 or 7 stars out of 10) and use this instead.

Could you tell me who makes double-strung harps with higher tension or gut strings? I've done a fair amount of research on harp models and makers, and I've not come across any doubles with high tension or gut strings.
@cindyshelhart10 ай бұрын
Hi, thanks for your interest in double-strung harps! In the brief history of the modern DSH (since 1989), a number of luthiers have experimented with strings and string tension. Some were successful... some, not so much (including pulling apart from string tension). Many DSH models originated as single-row harps, so the DSH version by a given luthier might have similar tension to its single-row sibling. That being said, there are varying degrees of "lighter tension" between DSH models, but all are definitely lighter than high/pedal tension, and I don't know of anyone building modern double harps with gut strings at this time. Hope that helps!
@organist198210 ай бұрын
@helhart Thank you for your reply! I'm now in the process of collecting various models of Rees DHS's. Would you say that they have the highest tension of all the current makers of DHS's except for perhaps the Stoney End Brittany DHS model?

A Lovely composition! I have but one request: please ask your hubby to try and shoot from the side next time, so we can see what you're doing. It always makes me nuts when harpists are videotaped from the front or if there's a music stand blocking our vision.
@cindyshelhart Жыл бұрын
Thanks, @donnap5906! I certainly will... we were in an art gallery with tables and lots of people to work around (yay audience!), and we didn't want to block their views. We did our best! The main goal was capturing a live performance of this tune. We know it wasn't 100% conducive to filming with perfect views, but I'll definitely be adding more videos in the future!

I've been collecting many single-course lever harps of all sizes and have increasing interest in double-strung harps but haven't tried one. My main question is, what types of single-course lever harp sheet music DON'T work so well on a large double-strung harp when trying to play as written? Is the main problem just in trying to play lever harp music that calls for frequent lever changes in which the left hand really needs to do all the lever changes for the right-hand strings, which obviously isn't possible on double-strung harps? The other problem I imagine is that damping/muffling the strings on a large double-strung obviously doesn't work at all the way it does on a large single-course harp; in particular, the bass wires for the right hand would continue ringing (even sympathetically) even when the left hand damps/muffles the wires on the left side.
@cindyshelhart Жыл бұрын
Hi @organist1982, and thanks for your great questions! You're absolutely right about how both rows of strings (not just one) are affected by sympathetic ringing, especially in the bass. It's one reason why I chose to move to a medium-sized DSH (26x2 or 27x2), so that I can access and damp strings more easily on both rows. I'll be sharing more info on these questions in future videos!
@debbiefink7282 Жыл бұрын
Thank you! This was so informative! I've been tossing around getting a double strung harp instead of a pedal harp for a while! It seems like it would work!😊

What about cross strung harps?
@cindyshelhart Жыл бұрын
Hi, great question! Cross-strung harps are chromatic, and the strings cross in the middle to form an X (hence the name), and these harps require a totally different technique. I specialize in double-strung harps, which are diatonic instruments, with the 2 rows of strings in parallel (no crossing in the middle), and sharping (semi-tone) levers on each string. And double-strung harps use the same technique as other lever harps.
