I'm so happy to have come across this video. THANK YOU this saves me so much time on cell shading in photoshop! Also I wanted to say your final result came out awesome. How were you using "levels" and "hsl" at 16:30 for the sky reflection? I think it's so interesting how many layer styles used for the rendering. I'm so use to using these more for photography and retouching I never thought to see these tools utilized for painting the way you did it!
@SourPlanet
@SourPlanet 9 ай бұрын
You're welcome! Yeah, I use a ton of photo editing features. Helps the painting have more variety and subtle tones. For the sky, I used an adjustment layer at the top of the soldier's clipping stack. So it effects everything related to the soldier. I tinted everything to be a lot more blue. Adjustment layers come with a mask attached to them, so I filled that mask with black-- which hides the effect completely. Then I grabbed a brush and painted white into the mask of the adjustment layer where ever I wanted ambient blue skylight on the soldier. White on the mask reveals the adjustment layers effect, which "paints" the blue tint into our view.

Krita is becoming better and better! ❤ I wish they add vector layer that can be drawn using brush other than calligraphy brush. Someone is already requesting it, I hope they will add it soon
@SourPlanet
@SourPlanet Жыл бұрын
I haven't investigated vector tools in Krita at all yet. I've been using Affinity Designer for vector. They have a vector brush engine. Every single stroke is a vector. Which means you can change the brush tip *after* making a mark. You can also change the shape of the mark, as it's just a series of editable points. It's pretty amazing! But yeah, Krita has come a LONG WAY since I last used it. Leveled up very similar to Blender. Now they make a perfect duo.
@michas4740
@michas4740 Жыл бұрын
@@SourPlanet I never tried affinity, it sounds like what clip studio paint does! Every stroke of brush is vector, you can change size, type of brush, pinch it in midway unlike raster layer, it was awesome feature! Yes! Open source community really awesome, what they have achieved so far make them even more competitive in properiarty program. Blender is great Krita catching up Godot too

I always refer to this combo for anybody who wants to try and dable in digital art, 3d texturing, modeling, sculpting, Concept art etc... Krita and Blender together are like cheating. Add Godot 4 to the mix, and this is busted. If anybody wants to support the developpmenet of Kirta, it is at 12,50€ on Steam and i think it's worth the price.

Photoshop really has moved in Stockholm Syndrome territory. They were on top for SO LONG that people can't imagine anything else being good. Same for Wacom tablets. It's totally possible to get a Cintiq alternative for under $200 and a free painting app, and use it for pro work. It's my hope that people will see that and continue to ditch Photoshop. Their stance on AI is untenable, imo.

I mention it briefly in the video. I have tried Gimp a few times over the years. It's never felt right for me. I gave it one last shot and simply couldn't get pressure sensitivity working correctly on either my laptop (Wacom EMR) nor my workstation (XP-pen). Figured if it was meant to be it woulda been by now. Krita, on the other hand, went smoothly right from the getgo. So I took off running with it and decided to permanently shelve Gimp.

Krita is a great program. I have clip studio and krita and jump back and forth depending on which tools I like to use. Clip studio the only tool I wish I had in krita is the vector blob kinda brush. can draw a shape and it instantly fills with the foreground color. doing lasso and then filling it with a color is the same kinda thing but breaks my flow.
@SourPlanet

what size is you canvas in pixel? is that supposed to be a 2.34 lense?
@SourPlanet
@SourPlanet Жыл бұрын
It wasn't too specific to 2.34, but I did use a more cinemascope resolution. What I usually do is make a new canvas that's 239 wide by 100 tall. Then I go to image>image size in the menu and resize to a larger resolution. I base that resize choice on how much detail I need. If I'm just sketching, then probably 1200 wide and 72px res. This keeps the file nimble while I sketch. Later on- at detail phase- I size up to something more like 4k res.
